Each week we’ll be scouring the thread for cheaper assets to help your team, whether you prefer the dynasty or redraft format, and we’ll also provide some tips for DFS players. Finally, we look at some once great assets that may be overvalued for one reason or another – short or long term.

Forward

Carter Verhaeg, C/RW, Florida Panthers (47.2%): Whether it’s the lack of respect caused by playing at Florida or the fact that he wasn’t a fantasy factor before this season, Verhaeg should still be on the roster in ESPN.com leagues. Like most of the other 2020-21 contenders, he is a late starter at best, with four goals and four assists in seven games. And how can you not love a 25-year-old girl who regularly dates Mr. Underrated himself, Alexander Barkov, measures? The fact that Verhaeghe can be used as a centre or winger is another bonus.

Jaden Schwartz, LW, St. John’s St. Louis Blues (40.2%): He’s back after missing 15 games with a lower-body injury, and it’s not too early for the Blues to crack down. Prior to the win against the Sharks, St. John’s was the only team to win the game. St. Louis had already lost five games. Schwartz’s combination of Vladimir Tarasenko and Brayden Schenn on the first line should win more games and widen the gap on the Kings in the battle for the fourth and final playoff spot in the West. Now that the 1. The offensive team has to leave. (The return of a healthy Colton Parayko on their blue line will give the Blues another big boost).

Jarrett Anderson-Dolan, C, Los Angeles Kings (5.7%): The 21-year-old gladly throws herself into it without question. Anderson-Dolan scored nine goals in his three games on the ice after missing a month with an upper-body injury. Despite playing in the Premier League, he has three goals and four assists in nine games. As long as he plays in the Los Angeles lineup, Anderson-Dolan could be useful in deeper fantasy leagues that reward physical play.

Eli Tolvanen, LW/RW, Nashville Predators (5.6%): If the 21-year-old’s skills and talent don’t capture your imagination, his current role with the Predators with Philip Forsberg and Ryan Johansen should. Tolvanen had a goal and two assists in the same spot Sunday in Dallas 18 minutes before ice time. This young striker will be a star. Maybe sooner or later.

2 Connected

Jared McCann, LW/C, Pittsburgh Penguins (2.9%): With Evgeni Malkin now on the weekly roster with a suspected knee injury, the Penguins will need more offensive action from McCann. After a two-week absence with an upper-body issue, McCann was used on Pittsburgh’s second line on the left wing in both games against the Devils over the weekend. The versatile striker is expected to be at centre-back once Brandon Tanev recovers from his currently unspecified injury. Before McCann was injured, he accounted for three goals and two assists (plus-seven) in six games. The Pens were hoping the 24-year-old, along with winger Kasperi Kapanen, could replicate that pace in the future. You can’t ask everything of Sidney Crosby’s team.

Defender

Noah Hanifin, Calgary Flames (10.3%): You’re unlikely to find a defenseman with six years of experience complaining about Calgary’s recent coaching change. Since Jeff Ward was fired, Hanifin has three goals and two assists, averaging 2.03 points per game. New bench boss Darryl Sutter also has a 24-year-old player playing in the Flames’ top division, which is no mean feat. And he shoots more. Fantasy managers looking to upgrade their blue line might consider Hanifin.

Jamie Drysdale, Anaheim Ducks (7.9%): The 18-year-old made his NHL debut against the Coyotes on Thursday, scoring a goal, handing out an assist and looking good. An unlimited addition to any dynasty or deep backup league. The sixth-place selection (2020) is also worth keeping an eye on in bigger, newer meetings. Drysdale scored four goals and six assists in 14 games for the San Diego Gulls before transferring to the Ducks last week.

Goalkeeper

Casey DeSmith, Pittsburgh Penguins (12.8%): He’s playing well and the steals are starting with Tristan Jarry. The Penguins are in an uncomfortable third place in the East and don’t know who gives them the best chance to win, whether it’s Jarry or DeSmith. Both are performing well at the moment and could continue to split performances fairly evenly, starting with a back-to-back against Buffalo this week. If nothing else, DeSmith is an attractive DFS asset at this point.

Reduced expectations

Frederick Andersen, Toronto Maple Leafs (92.1%): Ask any hockey fan who is even slightly familiar with the Toronto Maple Leafs and they will probably tell you that Jack Campbell is the club’s new undisputed number one goalie. It doesn’t matter if the injured goalie has played a total of four (4) games this season. But it’s true, Andersen hasn’t always been good – even when the Leafs have mostly won – and Campbell is beaming with confidence after he put up a 31-game shutout against the Flames on Saturday. So at this point, the Toronto station is probably owned by a former king. (The fact that Andersen is suffering from a lower-body injury softens the drama of this decision for the foreseeable future.) According to ESPN.com, Campbell appears in 17.5 percent of leagues, but he is truly exceptional when he plays. We’ll see how he does in front of the Senators on Thursday. And especially if he can stay healthy.

Marc-Andre Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights (98.5%): Looks like it’s tandem time again in Vegas. After playing in all but one game since the first week of February – and dominating most of the time – Fleury is back for the Knights’ other top goalie. Robin Lehner did well in his first game back from a concussion, stopping all but two of his 25 shots in the win over the Kings Friday. After Fleury’s loss against Los Angeles on Sunday, it’s unlikely Lehner will be back between the pipes on Monday against the Blues. He ranks third in fantasy points for guards after the first half of the season. Fleury will undoubtedly continue to play at a high level – and not too often. Not if the Knights’ other goalie stays healthy.
