Everton 2-2 Tottenham: Jose Mourinho has yet to comment on a possible injury to Harry Kane.
Harry Kane suffered a late injury after scoring two goals for Tottenham against Everton at Goodison Park.
Nine days before the Carabao Cup final and 58 days before the start of the European Championship, Kane left the field in injury time with an ankle problem.
The striker appeared to land awkwardly after diving behind his head too late as the corner was cleared.
Manager Jose Mourinho said he did not know how serious the injury was.
It’s also a question I want an answer to as soon as possible, but it’s still too early, Mourinho said.
For him, it’s not because it’s nothing, but because it’s something.
We all feared that he would not play on Wednesday [against Southampton in the Premier League] and especially on Sunday [Carabao Cup final], but we will see.
Earlier, Kane was at his best as he took advantage of two defensive errors by Everton to give Spurs the lead in the first half and equalise in the second.
Between shots from Kane, Gylfi Sigurdsson equalized from the penalty spot to give Everton the lead.
Everton pressed for the winning goal and had the best chance of the match, but King Joshua’s shot was saved by Hugo Lloris and Richarlison fired the rebound into the net from 12 yards.
A draw did neither team any good in their pursuit of European football: Tottenham remain in seventh place, five points behind West Ham and Everton in fourth despite having one more game behind them.
Kane to the rescue, but at what cost?
Kane has scored 45 goals and provided 17 assists for Spurs under Jose Mourinho.
Kane’s tentative run before bending over and clutching his right ankle terrifies every Tottenham and England fan.
He left the field of his own accord, but did so immediately with a shake of his head.
Kane has suffered a number of ankle injuries in the past, which only adds to the concern.
He suffered two major injuries with a left ankle injury in the 2018-19 season and missed a month with a right ankle injury in the 2017-18 season. He also had six and four separate shutout weeks during the 2016-17 season.
He injured both ankles early in the season, but returned earlier than expected.
Of course, it’s always worrying when you see him limping, because he doesn’t lose weight easily, teammate Eric Dier told Sky Sports.
He hits a lot. It’s too early to tell how bad it is, but I’m sure he’s a good guy and will do his best to be ready.
Earlier, Kane showed once again how important he is for his team by scoring two goals from his only chances in a mat Spurs performance. In 62 appearances under Jose Mourinho, he was involved in 62 goals.
His final shots were his 20th and 21st of the season, giving him two wins in the race for the Golden Boot. It also moved him into seventh place in the Premier League’s scorers’ standings, ahead of Robbie Fowler and Jermain Defoe.
Error Cost improvement
Everton 2-2 Tottenham: Carlo Ancelotti says the team will fight for a European place until the end.
Everton showed a marked improvement on Monday’s toothless performance in the draw with Brighton. Two consecutive tangles cost them three points.
After Kane’s first goal, Michael Keane misjudged his header and sent a cross into the path of the Spurs striker, and the England defender was also involved in Kane’s second goal.
From a cross on goal he headed the ball to fellow centre-back Mason Holgate, before the ball deflected off Kane in the box. For the second time, Kane didn’t give Jordan Pickford’s return a chance.
Yet there were positive signs in the rest of Everton’s performance. They created chances despite the absence of their top scorer Dominic Calvert-Lewin due to injury.
Sigurdsson scored his second goal of the game with a superb left-footed effort into the far corner from a Seamus Coleman cross, after the Irish international had played a wonderful one-two with Richarlison.
Everton also took advantage of Sergio Reguilon’s awkward run into the back of James Rodriguez to foul the Colombian for Everton’s penalty. It wasn’t many contacts, but it was enough to award a fifteen million dollar hit.
The Toffees have now failed to win in five league games, but this performance was more promising.
