Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray and coach Dallas Eakins have agreed to return for 2016-17.

Bob Murray and Dallas Eakins are returning for the 2015-16 season. The Anaheim Ducks and coach Dallas Eakins have reached an agreement on a two-year contract extension that will keep him in Anaheim, General Manager Bob Murray and President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Murray announced today.

The Vegas Golden Knights have the best rookie record in the NHL, and are in the thick of the playoff race as the Western Conference’s top team. The Ducks, on the other hand, are in last place in the Pacific Division and are on the verge of missing the playoffs for the second straight season. The question is whether GM Bob Murray and coach Dallas Eakins will be back next season.. Murray confirmed the organization’s decisions Friday, nearly three weeks after Anaheim (17-30-9) finished the worst scoring season in club history.

Murray has led the Ducks’ management since November 2008, while Eakins spent two disappointing seasons behind the bench at Anaheim.

The team is at a low point after finishing penultimate in the NHL and missing the playoffs for the first time three years in a row since 2002, but Murray remains confident that he can get the Ducks back in the hunt.

There’s been a lot of talk about a lost season, and I don’t agree with that, Murray said. Some children got along well, others did not. A couple of middle-aged guys had a few lost years. But every time you go through this – call it a rebuild, a redesign, a remodel, a reset – whatever you want to call it, it’s a plan.

… We want to build a team that is faster, younger and plays exciting hockey that our fans want to see.

Owners Henry and Susan Samueli still have faith in Murray and his management group, even after the Ducks finished last in the league in points for the second time in three years. Their power play scores just 8.9 percent of their points – the lowest in modern NHL history – and Murray has not yet confirmed that Eakins will have a new assistant coach to lead that unit.

But the poor results on the ice still didn’t reflect the optimism Murray and many Ducks players felt about their young core of Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, Max Comtois, Isak Lundestrom and Troy Terry, among others.

Murray believes he has assembled some of the ingredients of a winner, and he plans to refine them in a busy offseason.

We have several young players in our organization who will be top forwards, Murray said. I think our young goalies played very well in the organization. … When you build a hockey team, there are boxes to fill, and I know some of these kids are going to fill those boxes now.

The Ducks are still uncertain about the future of captain Ryan Getzlaf, whose contract expires this season. The 36-year-old point guard has spent his entire career in Anaheim, and Murray recently met with Getzlaf to discuss his plans.

He’s obviously at a point in his career where he needs to take a step back and look at what’s best for his family and what he thinks his role can be, Murray said. We discussed roles on the hockey team. Ryan and I have discussed a number of issues and will continue to do so.

The Ducks are only ahead of Buffalo in the NHL draft and have a 12.1 percent chance of getting the first No. 1 seed in franchise history. Anaheim couldn’t finish worse than fourth, which means they’re assured of the highest draft pick since Bobby Ryan was picked second in 2005.

But the Ducks haven’t had much luck in recent draft draws, which has given Murray the impression that he might not fall once, because we fall every year.

The Ducks have a long history of draft picks and developing solid players under Murray, and it doesn’t bother him that his team, which has problems on offense, got a high pick in a draft where most defenders and goalies are considered his top prospects.

We’ll take the best player, as we always do, Murray said. We will not compile our list point by point. The best player available, and if things get tough, you can always – defenders are always valuable to move. Everyone needs protection.
