Arkansas (39-24, 19-19 SEC) has won 14 straight games in a row since its loss to top-ranked Mississippi State. The Razorbacks are currently ranked #10 in the nation in the RPI, and have the opportunity to move up to #1 if they win both games this weekend against #20 Auburn (7:00 pm Saturday, 3:00 pm Sunday) and #1 Texas A&M (2:00 pm Saturday, 7:00 pm Sunday). The Razorbacks also have a chance to clinch a berth in the NCAA Super Regionals for the first time since 2009. So, how high are the Razorbacks? Very high.
The Razorbacks played a pair of games last week at the College World Series, and won both of them. It was a winning week for the team, and a winning week for the fans that attended the games. The first game of the double-header was a 5-4 win over Indiana, and the second game was a 10-7 win over Oregon State. The Razorbacks’ baseball team (40-10, 20-8 in the SEC) has been in first place for 12 consecutive weeks, including eight unanimously. The Razorbacks softball team (43-9) won its second regional championship last weekend and will host a super regional for the first time.
Both teams had a great 2020 season before it was abruptly interrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic. But with both facing the postseason, a College World Series championship is out of the question for neither if they continue to beat their opponents.
When it comes to baseball, Razorbacks is one of the biggest brands in the game. In the past 17 years, they have had six CWS appearances and 16 NCAA Tournament appearances since Dave Van Horn took over the reins in 2003. Monday (12 p.m. ET, ESPN2) is the selection show for the baseball team.
The pandemic presented Van Horn and the Razorbacks with new challenges. The players couldn’t go to summer ball, and it was harder to develop a good team spirit because everyone was scattered all over the country at the height of the pandemic.
But in the end, it was worth it for them.
This is the first team where everyone likes each other, said pitcher Kevin Copps. Usually in teams, sometimes there are groups, or there are a few people who just don’t care and don’t care. And they can be very important people, so it mixes things up a bit. But this team has very good cohesion.
Van Horn said this year’s team is different than any of his others because there are no superstars, just a consistent group of players. They can’t win without each other, Van Horn said. And I think they know it.

Coppes is one of the most undefeated pitchers in college baseball this season, even though he has had his ups and downs in his career. Tommy John surgery set him back in 2018, and he came back in 2019 with a 3.89 ERA and a 6-3 record in 41.2 innings, but then he put up an 8.18 ERA in seven appearances and 11 innings in 2020.
Kevin came out of nowhere, Van Horn said. You could see it in the fall because it hadn’t been touched. And I remember Matt Hobbs saying: Kevin has improved. And we are: Yeah, we’re not gonna beat him! And then I heard from a couple of the guys: Man, I hate hitting Kevin.
In 25 appearances this season, Copps has a 0.76 ERA, a 9-0 record and eight saves in 59.1 innings.
These guys love to play, Van Horn said. They hang out here at the center, and we have great facilities, but they love each other, you can tell. And that shows on the field, they never fall out of tune. They keep working and fighting. And we had a lot of comeback wins this year, more than I can remember.
As a coaching staff, we know we will get the best out of them every day. And if we get our chance, this could be our year.
Coach Courtney Deifel has brought the softball program to the same level as baseball in his six years as coach. The Razorbacks won just one SEC game in Deifel’s first season in 2016. It’s something she still doesn’t like to talk about, even though she’s changed the program.
The challenges they have faced this season have given the Razorbacks confidence in their path to the Women’s College World Series. They lost their first game of the season, a 12-11 marathon against Oklahoma State in Monroe, Louisiana, in the Best on the Bayou Classic after trailing 10-3 after four innings. The rest of the tournament was cancelled, but Deifel knew the Razorbacks had a special season ahead of them.
The conditions were bad, and it was a struggle, she says. And we lost, and I sat there so proud. I guess: This team will get results this year.
As the season progressed, the Razorbacks proved Deifel right. After sharing a doubleheader with host McNeese State in the Cowgirl Classic (a tournament they accepted at the last minute by driving 30 hours to Lake Charles, Louisiana, due to inclement weather and playing 21 innings in two games), Arkansas turned around and won both games in a doubleheader. It’s the start of a 19-game winning streak, including the first 12 games in the SEC.
Arkansas won its first SEC championship of the season, and the sixth-ranked Razorbacks will take on No. 1-ranked Arkansas. 11 Arizona in the Super Regional (Friday, 7 p.m. ET, ESPNU/ESPN App).
The challenges of the pandemic forced the Razorbacks to show resilience, especially when they had to leave players at home for long periods. We echoed what [head football coach] Sam Pittman said, Deifel said. It doesn’t matter who we have, we need him. And that’s exactly what we’ve been doing all year.
Braxton Burnside said [everything] really prepared us for whatever might happen to us in the postseason. But you can be sure that this team will be competitive and resilient day in and day out, and we will enjoy it.

Burnside has one of the strongest rhythms on the team and contributes to Arkansas’ fun. In 47 games, she has a .347 batting average, 51 RBI and 24 home runs.
The cohesion of a softball team, as with a baseball team, is an essential factor in its success.
Razorbacks infielder Nicole Duncan made an impressive dive from third base on a hit that the team thought should have been one of SportsCenter’s best performances. Instead, another player from another team came in, but the Hogs didn’t care in the end.
Duncan said: That’s okay, guys, she probably doesn’t have teammates cheering her on like we do, Deifel said. And in that moment, I knew she was right. You know, she might need it and I don’t, because I have teammates who encourage me – that’s the thing.
They support each other, and that’s a very special feeling.

Baseball and softball teams support each other when they can. The schedule usually doesn’t allow for much overlap, but players will come to each other’s games when possible. He also appears in Razorback athletics texts and social media.
This year, it was mostly congratulations for winning and hitting homeruns, Van Horn joked.
I can’t tell you how many times I came off the field and one of my first messages was from Dave, Dayfel said. You feel a mutual support at all times. But of all the coaches on campus, Sam Pittman is usually one of the first I get. He watches every game we play.
People support each other. The athletics department is so close-knit and supportive that we want everyone to do well. Everybody [in Arkansas] is destroying it. And you just want to be where you belong. You don’t want to be the only team to fail at this task.
The Razorbacks are holding their own on the baseball and softball fields this year, so much so that national championships are very realistic for both teams.
It started to remind me of Baylor, the men’s and women’s basketball teams, Koppes said. It would be great if both our teams could do something like that.
