Focus Features has officially announced Downton Abbey 2 with the return of the full original cast. The studio has begun shooting the upcoming sequel with Gareth Naim Carnival Films. Shooting on the project began last week. This sequel, which will be released on Speedway later this Christmas, has also been given an official release date of December 22. December 2021.
The original Downton Abbey film followed the King and Queen of England’s visit to the Crawley royal family and the Downton staff, ending with a celebratory ball for the royal family. The film adaptation is based on the television series of the same name and was directed by Michael Engler and written by Julian Fellowes. Starring Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Imelda Staunton and Penelope Wilton.

In addition to the original cast, Downton Abbey 2 also has new members: Hugh Dancy, Laura Haddock, Natalie Bay and Dominic West. Oscar-winner Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey, will return to write the screenplay, while BAFTA winners Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge return to co-direct with Fellowes. BAFTA and Emmy-nominated director Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn) will join the team for this sequel.
After a very difficult year where many of us were away from family and friends, it is nice to think that better times are ahead and that we will be reunited with all our favourite Downton Abbey characters at Christmas, Nimet said in a statement.
Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski added: There’s no better place to be home during the holidays, and we can’t think of a better gift than to have Julian, Gareth and the entire Downton family return in 2021 to bring Crowley home to his fans.
