The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had plenty of chances to beat the New Orleans Saints on Monday night (Sept. 17), but instead, Tampa Bay’s quarterback Jameis Winston and receiver DeSean Jackson let the Saints off the hook in a 17-13 loss. The Buccaneers led for most of the first half, but the Saints outscored Tampa Bay 20-3 in the second half to take a 17-13 lead into the fourth quarter.
The New Orleans Saints lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 34-19 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on Sunday. The loss dropped the Saints to 1-2 on the season and to third place in the NFC South, two games behind the division-leading Carolina Panthers. The Saints played a solid first half, scoring two touchdowns and holding Tampa Bay to only a field goal, but the team could not sustain the momentum in the second half.
The New Orleans Saints came into Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers having lost six of their last eight games. Tampa Bay had lost three of its last four games, but that didn’t stop the Saints from getting embarrassed on Sunday. Tampa Bay jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter, and after that it was all downhill.
Taysom Hill earned the first preseason start. The first touchdown pass was thrown by Jameis Winston. However, none of the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback candidates was able to avoid the mistakes that condemned the team to a 17-14 defeat against the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday.
As part of the Saints’ six turnovers, each quarterback tossed an interception.
“Right now, I’m not drawing quarterback comparisons,” New Orleans coach Sean Payton said after the game. “With six turnovers, it doesn’t really matter who [played better], right?”
After both quarterbacks sprinkled in some great plays, it was either a tie or a small victory for Winston. However, as they enter Round 2, the race is still too close to call, with Winston set to start against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday night.
When they study the tape, Payton, Hill, and Winston all agreed that they will find some positives, such as Winston’s touchdown drive before the two-minute warning and Hill’s outstanding first drive, which ended with a Latavius Murray fumble inside the Ravens’ 10-yard line.

And the interceptions were not entirely the fault of either quarterback.
On a hot-read pass, Hill and wide receiver Ty Montgomery got their signals mixed when Montgomery sat in the middle of the field and Hill wanted him to continue running.
Meanwhile, Winston fired a long ball to Lil’Jordan Humphrey that looked to be slightly underthrown but bounced out of Humphrey’s hands and into the arms of a safety ready to intercept it.
Hill threw for 81 yards on 8 of 12 passing with no touchdown drives and an interception. Winston completed 7 of 12 passes for 96 yards and two touchdown drives, one of which he led with a touchdown throw and the other with an interception.
“It’s difficult to speak about anything other than six turnovers at first sight. But I believe there are a lot of very positive things that we can all learn from [and] some pretty excellent things overall,” Hill added “in relation to his interception
Hill said, “I was expecting him to keep moving in that look, and he felt he should settle.” “I think those are the things it’s good to see in a preseason game so we can make sure we’re all on the same page between our room and that room.”
When pressed to explain his interception, Winston was even more frank, stating, “Has to be a better ball — and it will be.”
Winston praised Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael Jr. for his touchdown throw, in which he carefully looked to the right flat before turning and finding a well-covered Humphrey in the center of the end zone.
Winston complimented the offensive line and running back Tony Jones Jr. for their contributions to the touchdown drives, saying, “Great playcall by Pete.” “We went a bit farther out than I had anticipated, but it was perfect time. On the rear end, LJ became available. They were putting pressure on us, and we scored a nice one despite the fact that they were in man-to-man covering.”
On that TD drive, Winston also threw two terrific passes: a 26-yarder to Montgomery on third-and-9 between two defenders and a 33-yard strike to tight end Juwan Johnson.
Hill’s finest throws were to Marquez Callaway, the summer breakthrough wide receiver for New Orleans, who grabbed three passes for 61 yards on the first drive, including third-and-9 and third-and-7 conversions.
When both QBs had to escape pressure or go deeper into his progressions, they had some great moments. Each had one or two tosses that were off-target. Each person took a bag.
The game matched Winston’s performance throughout the first two weeks of training camp workouts, when he had a few flash plays and outstanding practice sessions. But neither quarterback has yet done anything spectacular to really “win” or “lose” the game.
When asked whether his mentality is different when competing for the starting position, Hill pointed to the media gathered in the postgame news conference room and remarked, “Look, the talk of a competition is right here.” “For me, it’s about getting out there and giving it my all every night. I don’t like it when things don’t go as planned, whether I’m competing or not. At the end of the day, I’m just trying to be the best I can be for my teammates. So it’s the same as it’s always been.”
