During the regular season, we would have time during Summer League to speculate on which players might try to qualify for a spot on the NBA roster. Instead, we went through the playoffs and started the regular season just two months later. During these months, unselected players usually fight for a place in the G-League or play abroad to make their big break.

What these actors have in common is that they are tough. They should. These top 10 NBA players are the best in the league and offer hope for past and even future NBA rosters.

10. Temple Garrett

After a four-year career at LSU in 2009. Temple quit and joined the G-League, affiliated with Rio Valley Grande Vipers. Temple has been back and forth between the G-League and the NBA for the past 12 seasons. He is averaging 6.4 points in his career and has played for 12 different franchises.

9. T.J. McConnell

When McConnell arrived in the league in 2015, he played so well in the Summer League and preseason that he earned a spot with the Philadelphia 76ers. After his first season, he was a key player on the bench, averaging over 20 minutes per game. Because he could lead the offense and play off the field, he quickly became a favorite with Philadelphia fans.

McConnell is averaging 6.4 points and 4.8 assists per game. He signed a two-year, $7 million contract with the Indiana Pacers in the summer of 2019.

8. Royce O’Neil

O’Neal spent half of his college career in Denver before playing for Baylor until 2015. After failing to qualify, he played his first professional season in Germany for MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg. He was part of the Golden State Warriors summer league team, but did not back down and signed with Spanish club Herbalife Gran Canaria. In 2017, she continued this practice in Lithuania.

He made his debut as coach of the Utah Jazz Summer League team in 2017. In his first two seasons, he was a key player on the bench. He has now started every game of the season for the Jazz and is a key member of their top 5 defense. He is currently averaging 7.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

7. Wesley Matthews

The former Wisconsin star enjoyed an outstanding four-year career at Marquette University, but that wasn’t enough to get recruited in 2009. He joined the team that year, but became the team’s shooter that season after the Jazz traded Ronnie Brewer. After averaging 9.4 points on 48.4 percent of its shots from the field, the Portland Trail Blazers signed a five-year, $34 million contract with Matthews.

Matthews, on the other hand, averaged 15.4 points in five seasons at Portland. He draws 38.1 percent of his career within three points and is now in his 12th season.

6. Maxi glue

Kleber was selected to the 2014 NBA Draft after playing three seasons of professional football in Germany. He retired and then played the next three seasons for German and Spanish clubs. He was part of the National League All-Star in 2015 and 2017, which led him to the Dallas Mavericks in 2017.

Kleber’s breakthrough came last year, when he averaged 9.1 points and 5.2 rebounds, and made 37.3% from three-point range. He started this season for the Mavericks. This year it has reached the impressive figure of 47.5%, assuming three points.

5. Derrick Jones Jr.

Jones is a former Southeast Pennsylvania Player of the Year who spent just one season at UNLV. This prompted Mr. Jones to participate in the NBA project; however, he was not selected in 2016.

Highflyer joined the Phoenix Suns and later became a finalist in the NBA Slam Dunk contest. After two seasons with the Suns, he transferred to the Miami Heat. He got more playing time and averaged 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds off the bench. Last season, Jones averaged 8.5 points and won an NBA slam dunk contest against Aaron Gordon.

In his Detroit season alone, Wood averaged 13.1 points, 6.3 rebounds and shot 56.7 percent from the field.
