Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has signed a new long-term contract, keeping him at the club until 2025. The 26-year-old Dutch international has been at Liverpool since the summer of 2018, having come from Southampton in an initial £75m deal. A left-back, Van Dijk has been a key figure in the Reds’ recent success, captaining the side in his debut season and establishing himself as a key component of Jurgen Klopp’s team. The deal will run until the summer of 2025.

In a move that will see at least one of Liverpool’s major stars depart Anfield in the summer, Virgil van Dijk has agreed a new five-year deal with the club. The Netherlands international, who spent just over a year at Southampton on loan before joining Liverpool for £75m in January 2018, has become a crucial part of Jurgen Klopp’s first-team plans and will now commit his future to the Reds until 2023.

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has signed a new five-year contract with the club, the club have announced. The Dutch international will now remain a part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad until the summer of 2025. The deal is believed to be worth around £75million plus add ons.

Virgil van DijkVan Dijk last appeared in a competitive game for Liverpool in October 2020, although he has since returned to training.

Virgil van Dijk, a Liverpool defender, has extended his contract until the summer of 2025.

The 30-year-old joins Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, and Alisson in signing new contracts with the club this summer.

Last season, he only appeared in five league games after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in October.

Van Dijk claimed he was “delighted, extremely pleased, and proud” to sign a new contract after resuming action in preseason.

“Where I am now, how I feel today, as a very senior, vital player for the team and for the club,” the Netherlands centre-back, who has played 130 times for Liverpool, said. “That’s a wonderful sensation, and it’s why I feel so at home here.”

Jurgen Klopp, the manager, said: “Consider what we’d have to pay if we were to purchase this kid right now. We simply had to offer him a new contract, which was a blessing in disguise.”

‘Financial power is unsurprising,’ Klopp says.

Liverpool’s lone summer acquisition is center defender Ibrahima Konate, who cost £36 million from RB Leipzig.

While rivals Manchester City, Chelsea, and Manchester United have spent considerably more on new offensive players, the club has concentrated its efforts on ensuring the futures of important first-team players.

“I’m not shocked because these clubs don’t rely on this sort of stuff, I believe,” Klopp said when asked whether he was surprised other teams were spending lavishly despite the pandemic’s interruption.

“We’re all aware of the problems at Chelsea, City, and PSG. I’m not sure what’s going on at Manchester United, and I’m not sure how they do it.

“I’m never shocked by City, Chelsea, or United’s financial might. I’ve lived in the country long enough to know that they always find a way to get things done.

“It’s our way for us.” It’s also critical that we keep the team together.

“I understand it isn’t as thrilling as bringing in new players. People believe that if you don’t sign, you don’t work; nevertheless, this is not true.

“I realize it’s not as thrilling, but if you’re a true Liverpool supporter, you’re thrilled by the club’s recent news.”

What if I told you that

Van Dijk has won 72 of his 95 Premier League games since joining Liverpool in January 2018. The 76 percent victory percentage is the highest of any player who has made 80 or more appearances in the league over the same time span.

‘I’m ready for the weekend,’ says the narrator.

Van Dijk, who joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most important defenders, having played every domestic minute when the Reds won the Premier League in 2019-20.

His injury occurred early in the 2020-21 season, when the club’s defense resources were already strained due to injuries to Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

In order to concentrate on his recovery, Van Dijk decided not to participate for the Netherlands in the postponed European Championship this summer.

He’s appeared in three preseason games and believes his comeback from “a season to forget” is “doing nicely.”

“I’m feeling okay,” Van Dijk said, adding that he might play in Liverpool’s season opener against Norwich on Saturday.

“In friendlies, you build up your match fitness by performing things over and over again.”

“I think I’m ready for the weekend, but we’ll see what the boss says. For me personally, it will be a completely new environment and attitude.”
