The Chicago Bears have made themselves look ridiculous so far this season. The team brought in Andy Dalton and named him the starting quarterback, dropped Kyle Fuller and the Allen Robinson saga continues to this day.

The 2020 Bears lacked individuality on offense, which ultimately led to their playoff loss against the New Orleans Saints. Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace will return, but I don’t think anyone outside of that duo, and maybe George McCaskey knows if the duo will be around after this season. It doesn’t even look like the Bears will renew Allen Robinson’s contract when his franchise tag expires after this season, so why not look for his replacement now?

With the 20. In the 2021 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears selected 2020 Heisman Trophy-winning receiver Devonta Smith from Alabama.

Corresponds to data sheet

In the video above, watch Devonta Freshman Smith score the winning touchdown on the biggest stage in college football. Smith finished his time in Tuscaloosa with 235 catches, 3,965 yards and 47 touchdowns, and that’s not even his most impressive statistic. He also finished his college career with an incredible 16.9 YPC average.

When Jalen Weddle transferred to Alabama at the start of the 2020 season, Smith immediately became Mac Jones’ new favorite target, which was enough to catapult Devonta Smith to the 2020 Heisman Trophy. With 117 catches, nearly 2,000 yards and 23 touchdowns, Smith walked away with the award, and he rounded it out with a phenomenal performance against Ohio State in the National Championship Game. Smith had 12 catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns in his debut for the Crimson Tide, who won the title in convincing fashion.

Devonta Smith is a deep threat who can disrupt any defense. During his time at Alabama, he created a second level of separation on his routes, and his stats and record are proof of that. Smith let slip a pro day at Alabama, but showed flashes of speed and a passing game that most defenders couldn’t handle at the college level. He dominated Alabama and, like fellow draft pick Jaylen Weddle this year, he did so with three different quarterbacks: Mc Jones, Jaylen Hurts and Tua Tagovailoa.

Offensive coordinators can draft Smith in the slot or as a wideout because he can finish the game in the end zone, something the Bears will definitely need to take advantage of if they end up selecting him. In addition to his exceptional hands, Smith is also quick in and out of the cut, which helps him become the polished road racer he is. Additionally, Smith got the chance to play special teams at Alabama and even returned a punt during his senior season, the only year he returned all kicks and punts.

If Devonta Smith is chosen at No. 20, Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy will be praising a potential Alabama talent. In most 2021 NFL drafts, Rashod Bateman goes here as the receiver’s choice, but the Bears would be absolutely stupid to give up the 2020 Heisman Trophy winner when he’s available at #20 overall.

It’s important to remember that the Bears have traded several draft picks in the recent past, so don’t be surprised if you see a potential move at that position as well. For this exercise, our simulation did not include any exchanges, so this is the choice that made the most sense. It’s also a pick I hope the Chicago Bears execute on selection day.
