May MLB Quirkjians – A month of May, May and Mays, plus Anderson, Anderson and Anderson

The month of May is finally here, and it’s time to review the second month of the 2017 season for the Colorado Rockies. While some of the teams in the National League West are still vying for the division title, the Rockies are not a part of that conversation any longer. They have been sold to a group of investors from the New York Mets, and many are wondering if the club can ever be in the playoffs again.

The month of May, May and Mays, plus Anderson, Anderson and Anderson. I’ve moved to the US for the summer to be a part of the World Series of Poker Circuit. I have 8 weeks to get enough chips to make the field. I’m sitting at about 1,500 right now so I’m feeling pretty good about my chances. I’m going to be living with two other poker players, so it will be interesting to see how they live. After poker, I will probably get a job at a casino. It’s time for me to move on from my old career and start a new one.

Its May and the Major League Baseball season has yet to begin, but we’ve already seen a few things happen that we think some baseball fans will find curious, intriguing or downright bizarre.

May began with two Mays pitching. The month also included the 90th birthday for Willie Mays. And that is just the beginning — because there was plenty of wild, weird and wacky. Here are The Quirkjians for May. May 1 Dodgers pitcher Justin May made his first appearance ever in a game in the month of May (he hurt his arm, and went on the IL). Mets reliever Trevor May got a victory. They are two of 16 players with the last name May who have appeared in a big league game. The only other player with a last name the same as a month is former Brewers pitcher Don August. He was 5-3 in August in his career. Dennis Schneidler-USA TODAY Sports The White Sox’s Tim Anderson hit a grand slam, ending a streak of 15 home runs with no one on base. It was the longest streak of only solo home runs since Cameron Maybin, in 2018-20, had 16 straight. May 2 The Brewers’ Alec Bettinger became the first pitcher to give up a grand slam in each of the first two innings of his major league debut. Jim Palmer threw 3,948 innings in his career and never gave up a grand slam. Neither did Gary Peters (2,081 IP) or Joaquin Andujar (2,153), but they each hit one. Indians outfielder Daniel Johnson went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts. It was the third time that a player has had five strikeouts in a game this year. It happened twice last season. The last season in which there were three individual five-strikeout games through May 2 was 2018, when there were four, two by Giancarlo Stanton. May 3 The Cardinals hit a three-run homer (this one by Nolan Arenado) for the fifth straight game. In the expansion era, the only two teams to hit a three-run home run (or a grand slam) in six straight games are the 1996 Tigers and the 1981 Orioles. Earl Weaver managed that Orioles team. He used to say teams win with “pitching, defense and three-run homers.” May 4 Braves pitcher Huascar Ynoa hit a grand slam, the second start in a row in which he had homered. The record for consecutive starts by a pitcher with a home run is four by Ken Brett in 1973. The same day, in his first at-bats in pro ball, White Sox pitcher Dylan Cease went 3-for-3, meaning he had a three-hit game this season before Mookie Betts or D.J. LeMahieu, among others. The last time a pitcher hit a grand slam and another pitcher had three hits on the same day (and the pitcher had to pitch that day, not pinch hit) was in 1950, when Erv Palica hit a grand slam and Ned Garver had three hits. 2 Related May 5 Nationals reliever Kyle Finnegan recorded the first immaculate inning of the year: nine pitches, three strikeouts. The Indians’ Zach Plesac was the only pitcher to accomplish the feat last year. May 7 The Phillies’ Rhys Hoskins went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts, but scored two runs. His final batting line was 4-2-0-0 with four strikeouts. The only player since 1900 to have a 4-2-0-0 line with four strikeouts was Frank Baumholtz in 1947. May 8 And for fans of “The Office,” the pitchers of record in the Nationals-Yankees game were Tanner Rainey and Justin Wilson, or Rainey Wilson. But that’s not as good as when Chuck Rainey and Mark Clear — Rainey and Clear — pitched in the same bullpen for the Red Sox in the 1980s. May 9 Nationals reliever Sam Clay faced the Yankees’ Clint Frazier for a Clay vs. Frazier at-bat (even though there was no such boxing match). It didn’t end in a TKO. It ended with a GIDP. May 10 The Mets’ Patrick Mazeika won the game with a walk-off infield fielder’s choice, making him the first player in at least 100 years to have two walk-off plate appearances (the other was also a fielder’s choice) before he got his first major league hit. For comparison, Norm Cash, Rich Gedman, Ron Kittle and Jackie Bradley Jr. had combined for 3,975 hits and no walk-off RBIs of any kind. The Angels’ Shohei Ohtani joined Sam McDowell (1970) and Harvey Haddix (1952) as the only players in history to have 10 strikeouts in a game in which they played a position other than pitcher. McDowell moved to second base (he is left-handed) with two outs in the bottom of the eighth so he didn’t have to face the Senators’ Frank Howard, who hit him well. McDowell actually got a putout at second base on a fielder’s choice to end the eighth, returned to the mound in the ninth and struck out the side for the victory. Lachlan Cunningham/Getty Images May 13 The Rockies’ Connor Joe recorded the first RBI of his career. In his honor, here is the All-Common-First-Name-Used-As-Last-Name Team: C: Josh Paul. 1B: Connor Joe. 2B: Pete Rose. 3B: George Brett. SS: Gene Michael. OF: Hank Aaron. OF: Babe Ruth. OF: Luis Robert. Utility: Ka’ai Tom. DH: Frank Thomas. RHP: Nolan Ryan. LHP: Tommy John. Manager: Billy Martin. May 14 The Rockies’ Daulton Varsho played center field, right field and catcher in a 17-2 loss to the Nationals. He became the first player to catch and play center field in the same game since Andrew Romine on Sept. 30, 2017. But Romine played all positions that day as a stunt, a tribute to his versatility. The last player before then to catch and play center field in the same game was Brandon Inge in 2008. May 15 Diamondbacks outfielder David Peralta joined Brian Dozier, Jose Reyes and Brian Bogusevic as the only players in the past 15 years to hit a home run in the game after one in which they gave up a home run. Somewhat related, and even more impressive, on July 26, 2015, Cubs catcher David Ross pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning against the Phillies, then hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth. In Milwaukee, the Braves’ Ian Anderson beat the Brewers’ Brett Anderson, with the TV call by Brewers broadcaster Brian Anderson. May 16 The Reds beat the Rockies 7-6, coming from a run down in the top of the ninth, winning on a run-scoring wild pitch and a run-scoring passed ball. The last time a team, trailing by a run in the ninth, scored two runs in the inning to win on a wild pitch or a passed ball (or two wild pitches) was July 14, 1973, when the Angels’ Dave Sells wild-pitched home Ike Brown and Eddie Brinkman to give the Tigers a 2-1 win. Padres pitchers were hitless in their past 40 at-bats when pitcher Ryan Weathers ended that with his first major league hit. Later in the game, infielder Ivan Castillo, also hitting out of the No. 9 spot, recorded his first major league hit. May 17 A reminder that former White Sox outfielder Carlos May was born on this date in 1948. He wore No. 17 for most of his career. So, on the back of his uniform was his birthday: May 17. The White Sox’s Yasmani Grandal walked four times, and wound up with this batting line: 0-3-0-1. The last player to have that batting line, with four walks, was the Angels’ Brian Downing against the White Sox in 1988. May 18 Tigers rookie catcher Eric Haase, in his 26th game behind the plate in his major league career, caught Spencer Turnbull’s no-hitter. Tony Pena holds the record for most games caught in major league history (1,950) without catching a no-hitter. Mets pitcher Tommy Hunter recorded his first major league hit. It came in his 14th season. The only pitchers ever to go at least 14 years into a career before getting their first hit were Frank Tanana (21st season in 1993) and Chuck Finley (17th season in 2002). Hunter said, “That was the coolest thing that’s happened in my career, I got a knock in The Show.” When he got to first base, he was congratulated by Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman. Hunter said he was so excited, “I don’t even know what I said.” May 19 The Rangers’ Corey Kluber pitched the sixth no-hitter of the season, meaning there have been more no-hitters through seven weeks of the season than there were during the 1982-85 seasons combined (five). Mets outfielder Khalil Lee struck out in his first eight plate appearances in the major leagues, the first position player ever to do that. Different era, different game. In Hall of Famer Joe Sewell’s final two seasons, he had 1,182 plate appearances — and struck out seven times. May 20 The Reds’ Jesse Winker hit three home runs, the fifth player this year to hit three homers in a game. The record for most individual three-homer games in a season is 22, set in 2001 and 2019. The Braves beat the Pirates 20-1. So, in Atlanta’s Ian Anderson’s last two starts, the winning and losing pitcher in each game was named Anderson, first Brett, and then Tyler, and both times Ian. Albert Pujols hit his first home run as a Dodger. The Diamondbacks’ Merrill Kelly became the 433rd pitcher to yield a home run to Pujols. We looked at the last names of all 433, and here are 10 connective names: Fisher-Price, Nova-Cain, King-George, Benjamin-Franklin, Lincoln-Kennedy, Carroll-Burnett, Dull-Gray, Lilly-Meadows, Diamond-Sale, Henn-Gobble. May 23 The White Sox’s Grandal took the AL lead in walks with Nos. 36 and 37. He finished the game against the Yankees with a .141 average. The only player ever to finish a full season with at least 35 walks and a batting average under .150 was Henry Easterday in 1890. No player has ever walked 100 times with an average under .200. The closest was Adam Dunn, who hit .204 and walked 105 times for the White Sox in 2012. May 24 In a 14-5 victory over the Blue Jays, the Rays became the first team in history to score five runs in the first inning of a game, then nine runs in extra innings. In fact, no team has ever scored five runs in the first inning of a game and five runs in extra innings. May 25 The Angels’ Justin Upton’s 316th home run was his first career leadoff home run. Eddie Mathews holds the major league record for most home runs (435) before his first leadoff homer. Upton’s brother, B.J., hit 11 leadoff homers. May 26 The day after Justin Upton hit his first career leadoff homer, he hit his second. The last Angel to hit a leadoff homer in back-to-back games was Mike Trout in 2012. May 27 Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. made his 13th and 14th errors of the season. He has 13 homers. He became the first player since Troy Glaus in 2000 to have a dozen homers (16) and a dozen errors (13) before Memorial Day. The complete list, homers first: Dean Palmer (13-13 in 1998), Mike Schmidt (12-14 in 1984), Tony Perez (18-14 in 1970), Harmon Killebrew (18-12 in 1959) and Rogers Hornsby (12-13 in 1925). May 29 Orioles first baseman Tyler Nevin made his major-league debut. It was his birthday. He hit a double. The Elias Sports Bureau confirmed that a player has made his major-league debut on his birthday “many, many times,” which came as a surprise. Shane Bieber did so in 2018. Foster Griffin did so last year.

A whole month’s worth of oddities

There were four no-hitters during a 14-game stretch in May. There were five no-hitters from 1982 to 1985 combined. The Yankees went until May 17 before they hit their first triple of the year. It was hit by Brett Gardner. It came in their 40th game. The only teams in history that have gone longer into a season without a triple were the 1982 Giants (41 games), the 2019 Marlins (52) and the 2019 Indians (54). Cardinals second baseman Tommy Edman played every inning of every game in May. He played every inning in April, too. Through May 27, he had played all 451 innings that the Cardinals have played this year. Cal Ripken Jr. is the record holder with 8,264 consecutive innings played. Brewers pitchers hit two homers in May. The catchers for the Orioles and Angels hit zero homers in May. The second basemen for the Cubs and Diamondbacks hit zero home runs in May. The A’s do not have a home run from a shortstop all season. The Rays do not have a home run from a first baseman all season. The Diamondbacks’ Tim Locastro was hit by a pitch three times in May, a relatively painless month for him. But it gave him 33 in his career in 447 plate appearances. Hank Aaron was hit 32 times in his career in 13,941 plate appearances. There were seven games in May in which a starting pitcher had allowed no runs, had no walks and struck out 10. There were eight such starts all last season. On May 21, the Yankees’ Jordan Montgomery and the White Sox’s Carlos Rodon had a 10-0-0 start in the same game, the first time in major league history that that has happened. There were 11 home runs in May that traveled at least 460 feet. There were 18 all last season. White Sox manager Tony La Russa’s team won 18 games in May, running his career total to 2,757, six short of John McGraw for second on the all-time list for victories. In May, La Russa managed his first game ever against the Cardinals. Think about that: He managed his first game on Aug. 3, 1979. Tim McCarver, who will turn 80 this year, was an active player in 1979. In La Russa’s first game as a manager, the Blue Jays’ second baseman was Danny Ainge.

Shaun Donovan Has the Résumé and the Money. He Just Needs the Votes.

After all the rumors, the real results are in: Shaun Donovan, President Obama’s nominee to head the Department of Housing and Urban Development, is getting confirmed. The Senate is expected to vote on Donovan’s nomination as early as this week, and the current odds suggest he’ll sail through. (He was approved by a unanimous voice vote in the Senate last month.) If you’ve been following the news, you know that Donovan has been accused of a serious conflict of interest, since he’s a billionaire who’s funded both Democratic and Republican politicians—including Mitt Romney, whom he’s supported in the past. The White House insists that the accusation is unfounded.

Shaun Donovan, President Barack Obama’s newly appointed nominee for the next head of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), has the résumé, but he just doesn’t have the votes. The Republican Senate is holding up the nomination, and Democrats need to win at least six GOP seats to take back the Senate in November.

In running for mayor of New York, Mr. Donovan is arguing that his leadership experience offers what the city needs in a time of crisis. The New York City mayoral race is one of the most consequential political contests in a generation, with immense challenges awaiting the winner. This is the sixth in a series of profiles of the major candidates. word-image-5686 May 31, 2021 Five years ago, a powerful New York-based political strategist was rooting around for someone whom voters could envision as the city’s next mayor, someone with the right type of experience and gravitas to take on the weakened incumbent, Bill de Blasio. The strategist, Bradley Tusk, believed he had found his candidate: Shaun Donovan, a veteran of the Obama administration and a former city commissioner under Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Mr. Tusk believed that Mr. Donovan’s credentials would be irresistible to voters, saying then that New Yorkers “want the competency of Bloomberg, but they want something that’s more progressive.” Mr. Donovan recently recalled that moment with some wistfulness. He remembered thinking how he had missed so much time with his two sons because of his work for President Barack Obama, first as housing secretary and then budget director. He decided then that running for mayor would have to wait. Mr. Tusk never found his candidate, and Mr. de Blasio went on to easily capture his second term. Things have since changed dramatically. Mr. de Blasio is in his final year as mayor, and Mr. Donovan is one of 15 Democrats and Republicans seeking to replace him. Mr. Tusk’s firm now manages the campaign of Andrew Yang, one of the race’s front-runners. But Mr. Donovan, 55, has not been able to live up to Mr. Tusk’s initial ambition. He remains anchored among the second tier of mayoral contenders, despite the support from a super PAC — funded almost exclusively by his father — that has spent $5.5 million so far, much of it on ads trumpeting Mr. Donovan’s accomplishments. He has tried attacking the record of Mr. de Blasio, decrying what he saw as the mayor’s poor management of everything from city parks to the census and even the food supply, and drawing a contrast to his time in the Bloomberg administration with its aura of efficiency. Voters want change, Mr. Donovan says. “They’re sick of the political status quo in New York, but they also want experience,” he said after a news conference last month at Pelham Parkway Houses in the Bronx, where he criticized Mr. de Blasio’s management of public housing. “New Yorkers don’t want a rookie as mayor.” Yet many of Mr. Donovan’s news conferences, where he lays out detailed plans to end homelessness or address gun violence, are sparsely attended. His broadside attacks on other candidates are mostly ignored. Viewers of the first official televised mayoral debate talked more about the expansive HGTV-ready kitchen in Mr. Donovan’s background than about his proposals. Mr. Donovan entered the race confident that his track record of implementing his ideas about reducing inequality while working for the country’s first Black president would win voters, but instead has faced criticism that his privileged background left him out of touch with middle-income New Yorkers. He has announced reams of technocratic plans that he considers among the most progressive in the race but has not secured support from the city’s progressive establishment. Mitchell L. Moss, a professor of urban policy and planning at New York University who advised Mr. Bloomberg during his first campaign for mayor in 2001, said that Mr. Donovan had not taken off because “New Yorkers aren’t electing a résumé, we’re electing a person.” Professor Moss effusively praised Mr. Donovan, saying he was one of the smartest people he knew, a common refrain. Mr. Donovan almost single-handedly put New York “back in the housing business” when he worked for Mr. Bloomberg, he added. “Donovan has everything on paper,” Professor Moss said. “He may be the right candidate at the wrong time.”

A ‘look in the mirror moment’

The realization that he might run for mayor, Mr. Donovan said, came more than four years ago, on the final evening of the Obama administration. He was among roughly 30 of the administration’s longest-tenured officials who gathered on the Truman Balcony of the White House with the president and the first lady, Michelle Obama, reflecting on their past and worrying about the nation’s future with Donald J. Trump as president. “It was a look in the mirror moment,” Mr. Donovan said. “How could this have happened, and what are you going to do about it?” Mr. Donovan grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and attended the prestigious Dalton School. His parents divorced when he was 8 years old, a period that he recalled as difficult for him and his three siblings. He bounced between his parents’ apartments, and “there was lots of feeding ourselves,” Mr. Donovan said. “The profound thing for me was being surrounded by people who were wealthy and not happy and not making a difference in the world,” Mr. Donovan said, recalling how that sense was compounded after he graduated from Harvard University and a friend from Dalton committed suicide. By then, Mr. Donovan had begun interning for the National Coalition for the Homeless. Mr. Donovan said his father, Michael Donovan, who started a business that became one of the largest ad technology companies in the world, encouraged him to follow his heart in choosing a career, telling him that he could do anything “except come work for me.” Mr. Donovan went on to earn master’s degrees in public administration and architecture from Harvard. When he was at graduate school in Harvard, Mr. Donovan learned about the Nehemiah Housing Project, which used a community planning model to build thousands of homes in the neglected Brooklyn neighborhoods of Brownsville and East New York. Bishop Johnny Ray Youngblood, who was then with East Brooklyn Congregations, spearheaded the project. Mr. Donovan read about the effort and sought Bishop Youngblood out. “He was bright-eyed and bushy tailed,” said Bishop Youngblood, who recalled sending Mr. Donovan to California for training as a community organizer and saw his follow-through as proof that Mr. Donovan “was more serious than I thought he was.” Bishop Youngblood connected Mr. Donovan with the Community Preservation Corporation, an affordable housing developer in New York. Mr. Donovan eventually landed a job with the Clinton administration in the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he designed a program that helped to preserve moderate- and low-income units across the country. In 2004, he became Mr. Bloomberg’s housing commissioner and worked to reduce homelessness by giving housing vouchers to people being released from Rikers Island. Homelessness declined while Mr. Donovan was in charge of housing. Housing advocates credit Mr. Donovan with fighting the earliest wave of private equity firms who were buying multifamily properties and forcing out rent-stabilized tenants; they said he effectively worked with tenant groups to identify at-risk buildings and preserve their affordability. In 2008, Mr. Donovan helped launch the Center for New York City Neighborhoods, which is dedicated to helping people avoid foreclosure and to promote homeownership, an idea that Mr. Donovan believes put him on Mr. Obama’s radar. Craig Gurian of the Anti-Discrimination Center, a fair-housing group that is suing the city to end community preference in affordable housing lotteries, claiming it reinforces segregation, said Mr. Donovan missed opportunities as the city’s housing chief to address the problem. Later, when he joined the Obama administration, Mr. Donovan failed to vigorously enforce a similar suit against Westchester County, Mr. Gurian said. “He’s a very smart guy. He knows about housing and he’s had the power to do stuff, yet he didn’t,” Mr. Gurian said. “It just doesn’t jibe with his current persona in the mayoral race.” Mr. Donovan served as Mr. Obama’s budget director, led the response to Hurricane Sandy and was secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, where he helped reduce veteran homelessness by almost 40 percent and negotiated the $25 billion settlement with mortgage servicers after the foreclosure crisis. Eric H. Holder Jr., who served as United States attorney general under Mr. Obama, said Mr. Donovan had an “expansive view” of his positions in his quest to help Americans. “He’s a guy who hasn’t forgotten why he wanted to be involved in government,” Mr. Holder said in an interview. Mr. Donovan also created the Rental Assistance Demonstration Program, which allows private developers to renovate and manage public housing units. Tenants have worried that the program might lead to displacement, an idea Mr. Donovan rejects. Afua Atta-Mensah, executive director of Community Voices Heard Power, said that many residents found Mr. Donovan to be “smart, honest and open” when he defended the rental assistance program during a meeting with mayoral candidates but that he failed to see the gap between “doing a massive plan from D.C.” and “lived experience.”

Understand the N.Y.C. Mayoral Race

    • Who’s Running for Mayor? There are more than a dozen people still in the race to become New York City’s next mayor, and the primary will be held on June 22. Here’s a rundown of the candidates.
    • Get to Know the Candidates: We asked leading candidates for mayor questions about everything from police reform and climate change to their favorite bagel order and workout routine.
    • What is Ranked-Choice Voting? New York City began using ranked-choice voting for primary elections this year, and voters will be able to list up to five candidates in order of preference. Confused? We can help.

The group endorsed Maya Wiley, Mr. de Blasio’s former counsel, for mayor, and ranked Dianne Morales, a former nonprofit executive, as its second choice.

A perception of privilege

Mr. Donovan is fond of saying that he’s running a “campaign of ideas” and is in the midst of unveiling 70 ideas in 70 days (Day 36: strengthening the regional food system; Day 42: fast-tracking felony gun cases). His campaign mailed a 200-page book of ideas to the homes of journalists covering the race for mayor and to elected officials and other candidates. There are proposals for everything from how to alleviate public health disparities to how to fix the New York Jets, a parody plan he unveiled on April Fools’ Day. The more left-leaning of those ideas, he said, differentiated him from the more moderate candidates in the field. If elected, he has promised to provide poor children with bonds to eliminate the racial wealth gap; create 15-minute neighborhoods where a good school, fresh food, transit, a park and health care are within a short walk; remove the New York Police Department from city schools; and cut $3 billion from the police and corrections budget by the end of his first term and spend the money on underserved neighborhoods. Closing the racial wealth gap has been identified as one of the best ways to address systemic racial inequality in America. Under Mr. Donovan’s equity bonds proposal, every child born in New York City would receive an annual payment of $2,000, which would go into an account that would be accessible when they turn 18, and could have $50,000 waiting to pay for college or start a business when they turn 18. Mr. Donovan proposes using a combination of private, city and federal money to fund the costly effort. Cutting money from both the police and corrections budget shows a willingness to dive below the surface on a nuanced issue such as defund the police and look for creative solutions, Mr. Donovan said. On a recent visit to the Bronx that included a stop at the Futa Islamic Center for Friday evening prayer services, Mr. Donovan talked about the redevelopment of the South Bronx. The neighborhood was not far from Charlotte Street, the burned-out stretch of vacant lots and rubble near Boston Road visited by President Jimmy Carter in 1977. It is now filled with suburban style homes with lawns, a fabled tale of urban renewal. A few blocks in the opposite direction was Via Verde, a mixed-income 222-unit development dedicated to healthy living where Mr. Donovan formally announced his campaign. As Mr. Bloomberg’s housing commissioner, he helped bring the building into existence by launching an architectural design contest for affordable housing. Mr. Donovan recalled visiting the Bronx as an impressionable 11-year-old, watching from the Yankee Stadium stands as Reggie Jackson hit home runs in three consecutive at-bats to help the Yankees win the 1977 World Series. He went from being elated and hugging strangers to seeing burned-out buildings after leaving the game, he remembered. “People thought the American city was dying,” Mr. Donovan said. “And this was Exhibit A,” he added in reference to the South Bronx. Many political observers agree that Mr. Donovan has the credentials of a top mayoral candidate, but still has not been able to connect with voters. He is a native New Yorker but does not always sound like one. In an interview with The New York Times editorial board, he suggested that the median price for a home in Brooklyn was $100,000. The correct answer is actually nine times that amount; Mr. Donovan, who, with his wife, Liza Gilbert, paid $2.3 million in 2019 for their home in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, later said he had misunderstood the question. The mistake drew derision on social media, and fed the perception that Mr. Donovan was out of touch with the concerns of working-class New Yorkers in one of the most unequal cities in the country. That perception has also been fueled by the $6.8 million that his father, Michael Donovan, has contributed to New Start N.Y.C., a super PAC supporting his son’s campaign. Mr. Donovan said that several other candidates in the race have PACs and added that unlike some other donors, his father was not seeking anything in return for his contributions. “I don’t think New Yorkers are concerned that my dad’s intentions are to lobby me for more time with the grandchildren,” he said, while still acknowledging that his father’s support reinforced the notion that he had advantages that other candidates lacked. Mr. Donovan, aware that his privilege had become a liability with some voters, has been trying to address that concern in the last weeks of the campaign. On the first anniversary of George Floyd’s murder, he was arrested with a small group of protesters who blocked the entrance to the Holland Tunnel in an act of civil disobedience. Mr. Donovan, wearing a Black Lives Matter T-shirt, talked about how he has not had to worry about his 19- and 21-year-old sons facing discriminatory policing. “I am grateful,” he said, “but I am also angry.” Jack Begg contributed research.

Jordan Spieth Returns to the PGA Tour Just in Time After ‘Annoying’ Battle With COVID-19

Jordan Spieth Returning to the PGA Tour Just in Time Something to keep an eye on with Jordan Spieth returning to the PGA Tour is his health. In his last two events, the world’s best golfer has been dealing with mononucleosis, a condition that caused flu-like symptoms that made it difficult for him to play competitively during the PGA Championship in August and the Dell Technologies Championship in October.

Jordan Spieth has been battling through a nasty battle with a mysterious illness that has been affecting his golf game and his mental state. He was unable to play the Sony Open in Hawaii, and even missed the cut by one stroke. His latest news is that he has returned to the PGA Tour, just in time for the start of the 2018-2019 season.

Jordan Spieth has returned to the PGA Tour just in time after a battle with carbon monoxide poisoning. Spieth, who lost in a playoff to Bubba Watson at last years Masters, has been speaking to doctors at a local hospital in Houston and is expected to make a full recovery. Doctors at the hospital, who specialize in carbon monoxide poisoning, have said that Spieth’s symptoms are consistent with those seen after a CO poisoning incident, but have not yet determined the source.

We haven’t seen Jordan Spieth on the PGA Tour since the Masters over a month ago, and now we know why. Spieth learned this week that he tested positive for COVID-19 last month, forcing him to miss the Valspar Championship tournament at Innisbrook a few weeks ago. But Spieth returned just in time to practice on his home course for the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah. During the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic, the 27-year-old discussed his battle with the coronavirus and the state of his game with a week to go before his second major championship of the year.

A few weeks later he mysteriously dropped out of the Valspar Championship for no reason. Spieth revealed this week prior to the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic at TPC Craig Ranch that a positive test for COVID-19 has put him on edge in recent weeks. I was cautious, Spieth said Tuesday. If I’m with a group of people, I try to be outside, [because] one, I don’t really want to get sick, and two, I don’t really want to miss tournament weeks. It’s a little weird.

Spieth talks about his boring experience with COVID-19

. COMPARED TO: Tiger Woods is a fool, says a PGA Tour star who knows him well According to Spieth, the symptoms began around the age of 20. April, but he didn’t lose his taste, smell or appetite. After testing positive for the virus, he spent two weeks in quarantine at his home. A day and a half was bad, and the next five days were just boring, lack of energy and sinus problems,” Spieth said. Then I started to recover, and I would say that for the last week and a half I’ve been acting as if nothing had happened. I stayed home and kept a low profile, he continued. All the things you’re supposed to do.

Spieth returns to the PGA Tour just in time for thePGA Championship

COMPARED TO: Rickie Fowler’s career is so bad that the PGA had to change the rules to allow him to play in the nextmajor championships. Spieth returns to the PGA Tour this week to compete in the AT&T Byron Nelson Classic at a new venue, TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. This tournament is a bit of a home game for Spieth, as he grew up less than an hour away in Dallas. After a month-long quarantine and minimal golf, the Byron Nelson will be a much-needed workout for Spieth in the week before the PGA Championship in Kiawah. In the last week or so I’ve just started to get back on track, Spieth said. I’ve only played a few rounds, so I might want to get rid of some rust, which I wasn’t necessarily expecting. But I feel good. I feel strong. I feel ready for a good round of golf to come.Jordan Spieth is back on the PGA Tour on Tuesday morning. The 22-year-old prodigy returned to the PGA Tour in the first week of August after an extended rest due to being treated for ulcerative colitis — a rare digestive disease. The diagnosis required Spieth to change his medications and undergo extensive medical evaluations before he could resuming his competition schedule.. Brett Favre and an Inexperienced Packers Receiver Bonded Over a Simple Wink

The Green Bay Packers had built a reputation for being a team that thrives on the passing game. But, in 2010, with the emergence of a new quarterback in Aaron Rodgers and a young wide receiver named Randall Cobb, it was clear that the ground game would be a major component of the team’s success.

It’s amazing what simple things can do to make a long and complicated relationship a bit easier. That’s exactly what happened on Sunday night, when Brett Favre and his Packers receiver Donald Driver reconnected on one of the most iconic moments in recent NFL history.

The Green Bay Packers are in the midst of a fourth-quarter comeback against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The Packers have the ball with 1:13 left in the game, and the game is tied at 35. On the first play of the fourth quarter, the Packers run a play-action pass to backup quarterback Brett Favre. Favre drops back to pass, and he notices wide receiver Edgar Bennett running a shallow crossing route in the middle of the field. Favre notices that the Panthers are playing “bend but don’t break” coverage, in which they are playing Cover 3 in the middle of the field but with a single high safety offset to the left side of the field. Favre looks at his numbers and notices that the Panthers. Read more about brett favre mvp and let us know what you think.Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favre didn’t just hand out touchdowns and lead his team down the field. He was also one of the greatest figures in NFL history. His carefree attitude and penchant for chatting have allowed the Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback to bond with his teammates, even those who recently joined him in Green Bay. That includes Ruvell Martin, a wideout who has been active for the Packers since 2006.

In a 2016 interview with Sporting News, Martin recalled his first real meeting with Brett Favre. In the Week 6 game against the Miami Dolphins, following Greg Jennings’ injury, the former undrafted receiver became more active. Martin stepped onto the field and had a simple gesture for his quarterback. I set up and ran the route, and I remember a defender pressing me and covering me. I look at [Brett] and wink at him. And then you see him doze off. He’s the kind of person who likes that kind of thing. It’s all about playing the game, you know? It’s him: Okay, I don’t know who this guy is, but hurry up, okay. Are you winking at me? Let’s go. Ruwell Martin Favre threw the ball to Martin, who couldn’t reach it. He still finished with two catches for 25 yards in the Packers’ 34-24 victory. According to Martin, Favre winked at a receiver a few days later during a meeting with the team. And so he mimics the whole thing and says: I stepped back, made a perfect pass… and he threw! Everyone laughed and looked at me, Martin recalls. So the rest of the season, every time he saw me, he took a wide stance, twisted his neck and winked at me.

Favre had a reputation for mischief and character

COMPARED TO: Brett Favre nearly killed John Madden with a cruel prank that caused a rare allergic reaction Martin took Favre’s reaction at face value, which proved to be the right decision. After all, Favre had a legendary reputation as a man with a penchant for jokes and humor. The quarterback loved making himself and those around him laugh, from the flatulence machines to the bandit in the shower. Even after becoming one of the oldest active players in the league, he retained his sense of humor. After a difficult 2006 season, the Packers really needed the humor. In Favre’s penultimate season as Green Bay’s quarterback, he failed to make the playoffs 8-8. Martin, at least, finished the year with 21 catches for 358 yards and a touchdown. Much of that action came in a meaningless win over the Chicago Bears in Week 17, where he caught seven balls for 118 yards.

Martin was the coach of thePackers during the 2020 season.

COMPARED TO: Matt Lafleur finally admits the truth about Aaron Rodgers and the Packers’ controversial NFCchampionship loss Favre was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016, a year after the Packers retired his lucky number, 4. Martin, who caught his last NFL ball in 2012, will get another chance with the Packers in 2020. He received an assistant coach position through the Minority Coaching Scholarship Program. The NFL longshot worked with the offense, particularly the receivers, during the 2020 season. It’s unclear whether Martin advised tight end Robert Tonian, a rising star in 2020, to get Aaron Rodgers’ attention with a wink. Like Sportscasting on Facebook. ‘You Don’t Belong in This League, Homes’

In a recent article, my wife was quoted as saying that the men in this league don’t belong, and she was right. In the past five years, we have seen a number of players with stellar credentials fall to the wayside, thanks to various injuries, and this year, we have seen a current group that is so lacking in talent that you almost have to question whether they belong at all.

The NFL’s roughing the passer ruling has left Kyle Orton out in the cold. But he’s having a good time anyway and he’s not alone. A whole host of NFL players, from players who have been injured to superstars who have won a Super Bowl, have taken to Twitter to voice their support for Orton.

Another day, another child dead because of gun violence. The latest victim is 14-year-old Jordan Edwards of Fort Worth, Texas, who was shot in the head on Friday night. The shooter was a neighbor who had a history of problems with his family, including previous threats and confrontations. But even after authorities were alerted to the threat, they did nothing.

Although it’s been a long time since he wore the legendary green jersey of the Boston Celtics, Larry Bird’s legacy is still strong in Bintown. During his time on the floor, the attacker has shown that he is a talented player and a proven winner. He also had a lot of confidence and could hit deadly shots, making him the centerpiece of some famous NBA stories. In his rookie season, Dominique Wilkins experienced this reality first hand. And despite Bird’s rude comments, he left the field with positive memories of the Celtics star.

Larry Bird had the confidence to speak his mind and the talent to back it up

. One of the main rules of thrash communication is to avoid strong words unless you can back them up. Fortunately for Larry Legend, this has never been a problem. Anyone who has seen him play can attest that his apparent lack of athletic ability never bothered Byrd. Although the Celtics forward didn’t take any breakaway shots, he was more than capable of accumulating stats. During his career, he averaged 24.3 points, 10 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game and, perhaps more importantly, brought three Larry O’Brien trophies back to Boston. Armed with this ability, Byrd also unleashed numerous verbal attacks on his opponents. For example, he once told the entire bench of the Phoenix Suns that he was tired of playing against them, and then scored the winning goal. In another case, he warned a Celtics teammate that he was ready to kill him during a practice.

Put young Dominic Wilkins in his place

word-image-10797 word-image-10798 Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird reacts angrily to what is happening on the field. | Barry Chin/The Boston Globe via Getty Images Judging by the stories that have surfaced, Byrd was a real chatterbox. Take, for example, one of his first meetings with Dominic Wilkins. Although Wilkins came to the NBA as a highly regarded talent, Byrd did not hesitate to make things difficult for him. The Hawks and the Celtics met several times during the 1982-83 season, and Larry Legend was on the 5th team. April ready. One of the first times I played him, I went out for the first tie-break and went over to shake his hand. He just stood there staring at me with a stone face, his hands clasped behind his back, Wilkins said, according to a 2015 article in the Boston Herald. I was like this: Wow. Then we got ready for the game, and he said: You’re out of your element, buddy. I couldn’t believe it, but it all happened so fast I didn’t know what to think. Byrd didn’t stop harassing the rookie, though. Then they got the ball, it was my turn, and he said: I don’t know why they asked you to look after me, Homes. You can’t keep me, Wilkins. And then, bam, he rolled a 3. Then he came back down and said: They made the mistake of betting on me, Homs, and took 3 more.

Larry Bird didn’t give up, but Dominic Wilkins still had a positive experience that night

For most players, telling the opponent they don’t have it in them and then scoring a goal is more than enough. Larry Legend, however, was not in the majority. Then, a while later, I paused and he pulled away. I threw myself at him, Wilkins recalls. I jumped up and he tried to challenge me, but I passed the ring. He fell and hit the support of the basket. But even at that point, Byrd did not admit defeat. Instead, he gave the newcomer a biting double punch. He stood up and said: I like you, rookie. They have guts, Wilkins says. I was excited for a moment, then he said: But I’m still going to beat you to 40 today. Dominic didn’t let it get to him, though. Even if the Celtics win, he still scored a small personal victory by holding Byrd to 39 points. Believe it or not, young player Yastrebov left the field that night with a positive impression. Let me tell you something: I wouldn’t trade him for anything, Wilkins concluded. You know why? Because guys like Larry, Doc [Julius Erving] and Bernard [King] made you a better player. Wilkins has certainly become a very good player. Maybe it was Bird’s ramblings that made the difference. statistics provided by Basketball-Reference COMPARED TO: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird were teammates for their famousrivalry. This week, NBA phenom LeBron James announced his intention to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, the team that has been his home since he was a teenager. There was no doubt he was a great player, but there was also no doubt that he would find it tough adjusting to life in the Western Conference.. Lululemon Align Leggings alternatives from Amazon

While Lululemon is undoubtedly the most popular brand of active wear leggings available, there are plenty of other options out there for the active woman who wants to dress her curves, rather than distract from them. That being said, the Lululemon Align Leggings are a fantastic pair of active wear pants. Thankfully, for the active woman who wants the Lululemon look without the Lululemon price, there are plenty of great alternatives available on Amazon and other online retailers.

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Like most health-obsessed millennials, I have a strong preference for activewear, and my favorite brand is Lululemon. However, the brand’s pants are not always the most flattering (at least, not in my size) and their prices are a little too high for someone who doesn’t want to spend $80 on a pair of leggings.

Lululemon Align Leggings are a recent addition to the Lululemon line, and were instantly popular because they were designed to be slimming and flattering for all different body types. However, the high price tag has kept many people from buying the leggings. Luckily, there are plenty of alternatives online, like the lululemon align leggings available on amazon.

(CNN) – If you’re like us, you live in leggings even if you don’t plan to exercise. Whether you’re working from home or lounging on the couch, there’s nothing more comfortable than putting on your favorite pair. For many, Lululemon has become almost synonymous with comfortable leggings. Lululemon has long been known for its sleek, opaque Wunder Under collection, but in recent years all the fitness influencer social media outlets have been decked out in leggings from the Align collection. After dozens of women had praised the super soft material and ultra tight high-waisted leggings, we had to try them on ourselves. Let it be known that Align is officially the dark horse of Lululemon. We even compared them to a dozen other high-end leggings when we determined the best leggings of 2021, calling Aligns the best workout leggings. What’s so great about them? First, it’s what the brand calls a naked feel – it may sound like marketing jargon, but it’s really the best way to describe how Align pants feel on the body. They are soft and sleek and literally embrace your curves from waist to ankles. Second, it’s the fabric. The material, called Nulu, is very soft, sweat-resistant and has four-way stretch. You can walk around in these pants while doing yoga or getting in and out of the car to run errands. Then there is the design. The waist is high. Very high. The double layered belt gently pulls your belly in and gives you the abdominal control you need without pushing it out, compressing or inflating. word-image-14751 Other testers who participated in our guide to the best leggings of 2021 also praised the incredible softness of these leggings, giving the Align leggings high marks for everyday comfort and stretch. But where the leggings really excelled was during tough workouts. With Align’s lightweight yet opaque fabric, excellent support and high waist, this is by far the best workout leggings we’ve tried. Need more reasons to try it? We spoke with Alexis Belbel, blogger for A Double Dose, who often shares her love of Align with her more than 418,000 followers on Instagram. I prefer Align leggings – they are so soft and feel like butter, she says. It’s almost like wearing nothing, in the best sense of the word. I also love the colors they come in and the different length options, so if you are tall or short, they have the perfect model for you. The same goes for blogger Jessica Hall of Genuinely Jessica, who regularly shares selfies in Align pants with her 50,000 followers. Align leggings make me feel relaxed and confident in every workout, she says. I like them with a high waist and to fit my body. They are by far my favorite. The only downside to the Align is the price, which ranges from $88 to $98. The good news is that similar pairs can be found on Amazon for less. The Colorfulkoala and CRZ Yoga Naked Feeling collections are also high-waisted and ultra-thin, like the Align leggings, and cost just $24. Most similar to Align’s Colorfulkoala leggings, the high-waisted yoga pants have nearly 35,000 reviews on Amazon with an average rating of 4.6 stars. So when we were looking for leggings to test out in our Best Leggings of 2021 article, we had to try them out. After a few weeks of testing with 10 different contributors, we found that all those reviewers were right – Colorfulkoala leggings really are 5-star leggings at a lower price. We loved them so much that we voted the Colorfulkoala High-Waisted Yoga Pant the best budget leggings of 2021, thanks to its incredibly soft and stretchy fabric, fantastic durability, and convenient pockets. While not as soft as Align’s leggings, they came close to it according to our testers, especially for a pair that costs almost a quarter of Align’s price. Moreover, these leggings are available in 35 colors and patterns. So if you’re dreaming of fantastically soft and supportive leggings that can handle everything from a lazy day on the couch to an intense workout, but don’t want to spend too much money, you’ll be more than satisfied with the Colorfulkoala High-Waisted Yoga Pants. Browse our verified selection of the best budget leggings and other options from Colorfulkoala below. Colorfulkoala Women’s High-Waisted Pocket Biker Shorts ($19.99; amazon.com) word-image-14755 Amazon Colorfulkoala Women’s High Waisted Biker Shorts with Pockets When it’s hot, sometimes it’s impossible to wear long leggings. That’s why cycling shorts are an absolute must this summer. The CRZ Yoga Naked Feeling line comes in dozens of colors and patterns and has many styles (cropped, pocket, biker shorts), but our favorite – and the style most similar to the Align Pant II 25-Inch – is the High-Waist Tight, which comes in 42 colors and patterns. We also tested them when we were looking for the best leggings, and they turned out to be the second best budget leggings, just behind Colorfulkoalas. We found them very soft, not as buttery soft as the Aligns, but very similar to the Colorfulkoalas. However, they were slightly less durable, had fewer pockets, and one tester had issues with the belt often rolling off during the race. On the other hand, CRZ’s leggings come in more sizes than Colorfulkoalas’ (XXS to XXL vs. XS to XL), and after several washes, they show no signs of wear or pilling. Although we chose the Colorfulkoala leggings as the best budget pair, CRZ Yoga also offers surprisingly good leggings at very low prices. For more on these and other leggings, check out our guide to the best leggings of 2021, and check out our favorites from CRZ below. While the island nation of Cuba has long been known for its cigars, rum, and sorrel, it’s only recently that Cubans have started dabbling in a new “hobby”: cryptocurrency. While this new wave of “hobby” isn’t as respected as the old hobby of drinking, it is quickly gathering steam, and is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, the Cuban central bank is so concerned about “the number of crypto-related Ponzi schemes that have emerged” that it’s threatening to prosecute anyone who tries to profit off crypto.

The Cuban central bank has issued a statement warning consumers that cryptocurrencies have no legal protection in the country, and that a large number of people have been tricked into crypto-related investment scams. The central bank also advised consumers that virtual currencies are not issued by any government or centralized organization, and that they have no legal tender in the country.. The country’s central bank recently warned of an increase in cryptocurrency fraud on the island.

Suspected cryptocurrencies referred to in warning

According to an advisory from the Banco Central de Cuba, citizens should be wary of Ponzi schemes that hide behind legitimate investments in digital assets. These machinations are misleading people across the country, which is suffering from an ongoing economic crisis. Central Bank officials have also revealed the names of a number of alleged scammers operating in Cuba without a license, including Mind Capital, Mirror Trading, Arbistar, Trust Investing, Qubit Life/Qubit Tech, X-Toro and others. Arbistar is being targeted by Spanish authorities as the shell company is accused of a multi-million dollar cryptocurrency fraud that has bankrupted thousands of people in several countries. The Banco Central de Cuba commented on the situation of the companies marked in red: These organizations excel at offering the opportunity to make sophisticated investments through deceptive advertising on social media and other platforms, or even by using crypto assets as a new source to pique consumer interest. These ads usually promise a way to make a quick and easy profit with no apparent risk.

The Cuban government does not support existing cryptographic projects

Moreover, the central bank stresses that the Cuban government does not currently approve any virtual currency projects in the country and even advises the public not to engage in these types of transactions. Despite a warning from Cuba’s central bank, the island’s president, Miguel Diaz-Canel, has raised the possibility of including cryptocurrencies in his plan for the ease of the national economy. As Bitcoin.com News reported last week, Diaz-Canel wants to explore the feasibility of these decentralized technologies and their impact on the country. However, at the time of publication it had not confirmed whether it had decided to launch digital assets or create a central bank digital currency (CBDC).
