Following the massive success of this summer’s blockbuster Suicide Squad, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that a spin-off TV show is in the works. The story is being written by the Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn and the former WWE Champion John Cena, who will serve as executive producers.

If you want to know how Warner Bros. is driving fans away from superhero movies, look no further than Suicide Squad, the studio’s attempt at a crossover blockbuster. As the latest entry in the DC universe, Suicide Squad made a ton of money at the box office, but a lot of people walked out of the theater thinking “Wow, that was a horrible movie.” The reviews were mostly negative, and fans have taken to social media to voice their displeasure. One of the most common complaints is that the flick didn’t live up to the hype, which is ironic, considering the film was advertised as an action-packed movie about villains.

It was revealed earlier today that Suicide Squad 2 is officially in the works and will feature some of the DC Universe’s most popular characters. But there is one problem: Warner Bros. and DC can’t seem to decide on which actors to include in the film.

There’s no such thing as peace in Peacemaker, according to series creator James Gunn, who claims the spinoff from The Suicide Squad has “more action than any superhero program ever.” The eight-episode spin-off, starring John Cena as Christopher Smith, the helmeted anti-hero who murders to preserve the peace, examines the origins of the character Gunn refers to as “the world’s biggest douchebag” and a “pretty nasty piece of sh-t.” Gunn previews the action-packed Peacemaker and teases possible future seasons of the DC Films television series after establishing his HBO Max series in The Suicide Squad:

“There’s no huge plan in place, but it’s something I’d love to do, and I know the actors would want to do,” Gunn said of a Peacemaker Season 2 in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “We haven’t been picked up yet, so we’ll have to wait and see what HBO Max has in store.”

Gunn directs five of Peacemaker’s eight episodes. Jody Hill (Observe and Report, HBO’s Eastbound & Down) and the previously announced Brad Anderson (Fringe, DC’s Titans) and Rosemary Rodriguez (Marvel’s Jessica Jones, The Walking Dead) direct the remaining three episodes.

“I want to direct all of the episodes next season, as you’ll see, Peacemaker is a very, very different program from anything that’s ever been done in the superhero world,” Gunn, the creator of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy series, said. “It’s about a man first and foremost, and a superhero secondly, but it’s still a huge science fiction film with far more action than any superhero program ever; it’s just completely unique.”

Peacemaker is “no holds barred” yet frequently “quieter in certain respects” than Gunn’s R-rated Suicide Squad, an ultra-violent gore-fest with a high death count of ill-fated DC Comics characters.

“It’s about a very particular set of individuals, so it’s a little bit more about society. Peacemaker is one of the protagonists, and Danielle Brooks, who portrays Leota Adebayo, is another. She also has a completely different political viewpoint than Peacemaker “THR spoke with Gunn.

“So it’s just a little bit about what’s going on in the world, but since it’s a TV program, you have a lot more opportunity to dig much further into these people and their drama and humor.”

“It’s comparable in many ways, but it’s also more grounded, genuine, and authentic. However, it is still part of a larger science-fiction narrative that spans one season. The primary narrative lasts throughout the whole season, thus Peacemaker does not have a single season.”

Peacemaker also features Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgment Day) as Auggie Smith, Chukwudi Iwuji (Designated Survivor) as Clemson Murn, Freddie Stroma (Bridgerton) as the violent Vigilante, and Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee reprising their roles as aides to Task Force X commander Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad (Viola Davis).

The Suicide Squad, starring Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Daniela Melchior, Sylvester Stallone, and Viola Davis, is currently in theaters and available to watch on HBO Max until September 6. Peacemaker will debut on HBO Max in January 2022.
