Former Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson predicts Man Utd could lose Cristiano Ronaldo amid the club’s ‘shambles’ over Jose Mourinho. Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United, according to Paul Merson, might be short-lived due to the club’s’shambolic’ search for a new permanent manager.
After it looked he was on the approach of signing for Manchester City, the 36-year-old returned to his former club in the summer amid a blaze of triumphalism and near-unprecedented hype.
Despite the troubles of a club that parted ways with now-former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following a 4-1 loss at Watford last weekend, Ronaldo has maintained his incredible goal-scoring record.

Michael Carrick has been appointed as interim manager ahead of the arrival of Ralf Rangnick, who will take over until the end of the season, before United pursue Mauricio Pochettino or Erick ten Hag.
While Ronaldo looks to be unsuited to the upcoming interim manager’s pressing style, Merson feels the five-time Ballon d’Or winner would be just as worried about a club of United’s prestige choosing a temporary solution to their managerial crisis.
‘Manchester United requiring an interim manager is a farce – and Cristiano Ronaldo could opt to go in the summer,’ he told the Daily Star.
‘If they don’t finish in the top four, he won’t stay because he wants to conclude his career in the Champions League.’
‘And that doesn’t seem to be the case right now, since United is in disarray and will most certainly be humiliated by Chelsea this Saturday.
‘It could be better for all sides if he departs anyhow, because if they choose Mauricio Pochettino and he likes to push from the front, you can’t do that with Ronaldo.’

‘But what I don’t get is why the world’s most powerful team need an interim manager.’ It’s as if they’re writing the season off – as if you’re acknowledging that no one talented enough to be regarded long-term will apply. That is all there is to it.
‘This is Manchester United,’ says the narrator. That should not be the case. This should be one of the most sought-after positions in football.
‘It astounds me that a team like this need an interim manager.’ It’s incredibly spontaneous for a huge club like this. Now is the time to pick a permanent management.’
Ralf Rangnick will have a say in who follows him as permanent manager of Manchester United.
