TE giant Evan Engram is a potential victim of the cap.

Evan Engram #88 of the New York Giants is warming up for the game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Given the loss of NFLA revenue due to the effects of the pandemic, the League and NFLA agreed to a $175 million salary cap through 2021. This means that a team like the New York Giants, already struggling with cash flow issues, will have to find new and creative ways to free up money if they hope to improve their roster through the Free Agency.

With a small cap of $10 million reached during the offseason, the G-Men will almost certainly sign a handful of veterans in the coming months. Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post recently announced eight potential victims this season, led by more obvious candidates like goaltender Kevin Zeitler and receiver Golden Tate.

Still, it was the inclusion of the first Pro Bowler that caught our attention and could bring a tear of joy to Giants fans as it finally gets into action.

Evan Engram Dawn in New York?

Giants fans seem to have long lost patience with Evan Engram. If we had to determine the exact timing, it would likely be if the first round missed the outstretched arms of a potential winner in the Week 7 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Or maybe it was in the middle of his 10 other abandoned passes last season.

In any case, this tight game did not live up to its reputation as a first-round pick and perceived cornerstone of the Giants’ aerial attack. Will the franchise continue to compel with a lower-than-average smattering of players? Like Dunleavy notes, probably. With a possible exit from his contract, things could get interesting in the coming months.

Why are a professional bowler and one of Coach Joe Judge’s favorites here? Probably not. But Giants fans have grown tired of his drops – six interceptions while he was targeted – and management’s patience may have been tested. Since he is not injured, his salary for the fifth option for 2021 is not guaranteed until March.

Review of the English language

On the face of it, the Engram 2020 campaign is likely to be successful. The former Ole Miss Rebel finished second on the team in receptions (63) and third in yards (654), second in each of those categories in her four-year career. The former No. 3 finished third in the NFC behind Washington’s Logan Thomas and Detroit’s T.J. Hockenson in his first Pro Bowl nomination.

However, a closer look reveals that the player is struggling to meet the high expectations of the Giants’ organization. We’ve already reported a large number of drops. What we haven’t mentioned yet is that the Engram has intercepted six passes this year. He also scored 55.4% for his career when he was targeted, according to Pro Football Focus.

We were somewhat opposed to the Engram’s departure last year. That doesn’t mean we’re not disappointed in his game, because we’re very disappointed. But it’s hard to say goodbye to a talented offensive player in a unit because his talent is exhausted.

Yet at some point, the Engram must reach its untapped potential, because if it doesn’t, that’s what it is at that point. And what he is now may not justify being in East Rutherford after March.
