Caris LeVert had hiccups after an MRI revealed a small tumor on her left kidney. The promising 26-year-old rusher, who played a key role in James Harden’s massive commercial success storming into the NBA earlier this week, will be put away indefinitely.
Initially it looked like LeVert was going to the Houston Rockets in a deal with James Harden, but he ended up going to the Pacers in a deal with Victor Oladipo going to the Rockets. This versatile two-way player is truly a rising star, averaging 18.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.2 steals in his last 12 games in Brooklyn.
This health situation is frightening, but the deal was reached anyway, and the Pacers got another pick in the second round of the deal.
While the Pacers want to keep the young star and will wait for his recovery, some players traded in the past have not suffered the same fate in a similar situation. Teams were quick to correct what was initially considered an exchange after players failed their physical exams.
Let’s look back at four of the biggest deals cancelled in the NBA due to medical issues.
Thunder sent Tyson Chandler back to the Hornets in 2009.
The New Orleans Hornets had to give up Tyson Chandler to the Thunder of Oklahoma City and in return received Chris Wilcox, Joe Smith and DeVaughn Hardin’s signing rights.
OKC was pleased to add Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and Jeff Green to the heart of the defensive center.
While Chandler was setting up his new situation, we found out OKC was going to cancel a deal with a six-foot left big toe.
The OKC team’s then physician, Dr. Karlan Yates, reportedly advised Chandler not to be kept in the hospital due to a high risk of relapse in order to keep him in good health.
It’s absolutely insane. I’m super shocked. It’s crazy. Chandler described the situation in an ESPN report.
What’s even stranger for Chandler is that he had another injury at the time and didn’t feel any pain in his toes.
Pistons cancel trade for Donatas Motiejunas in 2016
After impressing the Houston Rockets, Donatas Motiejunas and Marcus Thornton were acquired by the Detroit Pistons in the 2015/16 NBA season in a three-team deal that also included the Philadelphia 76ers.
The big Lithuanian man was about to make his debut in the Pistons when doctors determined he had failed the standard medical test.
To make matters worse, Motiejunas claimed that Detroit intentionally made him fail, which is physical because the team suddenly changed its mind about the deal. In return, the Pistons should have given the Rockets a protected pick in the first round.
Medical checks are a nice thing, Motejunas said. The team doctor will simply tell you if you will pass or fail, although he may not even do tests. During these 48 hours, the team can actually decide whether or not they want the player. The Pistons announced that I had failed medical, although of course I had passed and played before.
Motiejunas returned to H-Town shortly after and finished the season with the Rockets.
Nets – Invalid acquisition of Abdur Rahim shares in 2005
The Nets, still in Newark at the time, thought they had a solid player in the person of Sharif Abdur-Rahim when they acquired him from the Portland Trail Blazers.
However, the former NBA All-Star was never able to make the team because he couldn’t handle the physical power.
Initially, the agreement was delayed as both sides tried to find a compromise.
Initially, Sethi did not reveal the nature of the medical problem, but later reports revealed that they believed Abdur-Rahim had a knee problem.
The 6-foot-11 striker has since maintained that his knee was not a problem and therefore he has never missed a game in his career.
Sean Elliott remains with the Pistons after being traded by the Rockets to the Knicks in 1994.
Sean Elliott is a beloved figure in San Antonio, but he could actually play for rival Houston Rockets in 1994.
The six-foot forward was with the Pistons in 93-94 and would transfer to H-Town in exchange for Robert Horry and Matt Bullard.
Houston declined to settle after it was reported that Elliott was found unfit during a physical examination. So far, the Rockets have not revealed the exact problem that prompted them to bring Elliott back to the Pistons.
All three players eventually returned to their respective teams before Elliot joined the Spurs the following year.
