Stein reports that the Lakers are of course determined to retire Rondo for this off-season. This would mean Rondo would have to pay after giving up his $2.7 million option for the 2020-21 season.
Meanwhile, the Clippers would be looking to improve their playing skills after the lack of a clear playmaker around Kavi Leonard and Paul George. This was not considered one of the factors that led the Denver Nuggets to a 3-1 lead in the semifinals of the conference, but it could have ensured that that lead was not lost.
Although this message expresses the Clippers’ interest in Rondo, it can also be a trick to make Lakers or other interested teams pay Rondo what it requires from a free agency. If Rajon Rondo can somehow be the same player that he was in the bubble that we haven’t seen yet, it may solve some of the Clippers’ problems with the game and at the same time reduce the pressure on Kavi Leonard and Paul George. As one of the smartest players in the NBA, Rondo could also be the big man who could appeal to Landry Shamet and Terence Mann to help Ivica Zubac grow.
In 16 playoffs Rajon Rondo has become a Rondo with an average of 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 1.4 steals, 45.5% of the track and 40% behind the bow.
Rondo’s approach to the Clippers is questionable to say the least, but a free agency is always a crazy time in the NBA. Let’s see what happens.
