Last night, the Oakland Athletics (18-14) got a good start from their starting pitcher Brad Bassitt (6-4, 3.23 ERA) as he tossed a two-hitter against the Los Angeles Angels (12-16) in a 5-0 win at the Los Angeles Angels Stadium.
Josh Bassitt’s eight scoreless innings as a starter gave the A’s a slim lead over the Angels heading into the ninth. He also came within three outs of becoming the first Oakland pitcher to throw a perfect game since Dallas Braden in 2010.

Bassitt had two hits in his first complete game of his career, Sean Murphy had a two-run single in the decisive sixth inning, and Ace took advantage of Bay Area traffic that kept Shohei Ohtani from reaching the plate to beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 Thursday night.
Now I’m just trying to hold back the tears. There are so many people in this organization who have supported me over the years, and I’m just so grateful, honestly, Bassitt said, pausing and repeating: I’m grateful for that. So many people who pushed me when I was going through so much.
Bassitt underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016 and then returned to Oakland’s pitching staff.
In a moment of levity after leaving the field, Bassitt picked up a three-pointed spear to celebrate his triumph. He was bought out by Shawn Manaea, fitting into the Ride the Wave theme as Ace tries to defend his AL West title.
He looks like Scherzer, said Angels manager Joe Maddon, who compared Bassitt to three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer. This guy is really good, it’s no coincidence. He’s a force to be reckoned with. He’s the guy we have to learn to hit in our division, he’s that good.
Bassitt (5-2) struck out nine batters and gave up just one walk. After Saturday’s win in Anaheim, he pitched the Angels in back-to-back games and allowed just two runs in 7 2/3 innings. He finished that big game in 114 innings and improved his record to 1-2 in five home starts this year.
He allowed a double by Justin Upton in the ninth inning, but then rallied to end the game in 2:59 as Lou Trivino warmed up in the bullpen.
Uses all his throws, runs ahead in the count, soft contact, not much hard contact on him. He’s making the most of his opportunities, he’s unpredictable and he’s throwing with a lot of confidence right now, A’s manager Bob Melvin said. This could be the best period of his career.
Matt Chapman and Elvis Andrus also singled and Tony Kemp added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to end an interesting four-game opening series with five wins.
With two and a half hours left in the first set, everything changed quickly.
Ohtani moved from the mound to the designated hitter position after his arrival at the stadium was delayed when he was forced to use public transportation BART due to an accident on the Bay Bridge that delayed the team bus.
Manager Joe Maddon introduced Ohtani as the designated hitter and brought in the well-rested Patrick Sandoval, who allowed five hits in five scoreless innings, striking out four and walking two.
Very good, isn’t it? I think he was excellent. Quick to call back, Maddon said. It was a great journey to build on.

Aaron Slegers (2-2) came on to pitch and gave up an RBI single to Chapman to break up a scoreless game, before Murphy put Bassit ahead in a big way.
Ohtani, who earned his 15th career shutout Tuesday against Texas. Homerun struck out, went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
Mitch Moreland was not on the injured list after suffering an inflamed rib, and he was expected to start the game for Oakland before Ochtani’s replacement resulted in Ace facing a left-hander instead of a right-hander.
Just hit more right-handed, Melvin said. We had a few more lefties in the lineup for Ohtani.

Team Ace has announced that it will be offering a new game starting on the 29th. June against Texas will welcome all fans. After the game against the Red Sox on July 2, there will be fireworks. There were 5,487 fans at Thursday’s game.

Angel: The Angels have reached the 85% vaccination mark, and Maddon is pleased that this makes communication much easier. It’s liberating.
Maddon also hit Kurt Suzuki, who was out with Ohtani. The Angels want him to catch a two-run Japanese star Friday night when he pitches for them.
Athletics: LPH Jesus Luzardo, recovering from a broken pinky he suffered while playing video games, allowed one hit and struck out one batter in 1 2/3 innings. He threw 25 pitches as expected in his first rehab start for Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday night. … RHP A.J. Pook (left biceps strain), who gave up a home run in the sixth inning against Las Vegas while striking out three batters Tuesday night, will likely throw a few innings out of the bullpen before returning to the A’s, though manager Bob Melvin doesn’t yet know what the official plan is for Pook’s next move.

LHP Sean Manaea (3-2, 4.17 ERA) will pitch for the Ace, trying to end a five-start winless streak in which he went 0-1. He will start the game against Ohtani (1-0, 2.37), who enters the game for the seventh time this season. He is 2-1 with a 5.54 ERA in his last three games against the A’s.
