After winning the NBA title, and ending the second round of the NBA playoffs with a loss, the Miami Heat are taking a leave of absence from the season. This is something that several teams do when they have won a title—and it’s not an uncommon practice. However, as the playoffs are a very short period of time, it isn’t a long period of time to completely recover from the physical demands of the playoffs.

After a year without a break, that’s what he claims. There is more than enough time to make decisions about rosters, offseason workouts, the combine and preparation for the draft, even if Miami doesn’t have a pick right now, the teams for the Summer League and Free Agency. Right now, however, Riley wants almost everyone in the organization to take a break after a 12-month period in which he was eliminated from the NBA Finals in one season, had to leave the first round in another, and all the while suffered a coronavirus pandemic that changed almost everything. 
1 Connected We’ve been doing this for a while now, so the first thing we’re aiming for is rest, Riley, the Heat’s president, said Thursday in his annual address to the team, which traditionally comes out shortly after the season ends. Our players, our staff, the people who are here every day, every day, they are more mentally exhausted than physically. And I think they just need a few weeks, a month of rest. It’s a major theme in the NBA this season: how the tight schedule and extra protocol requirements put in place to combat the virus – including daily, often late night or early morning testing, restrictions on how much time teams can spend together, restrictions on who they can hang out with – will exhaust players and teams. It is mentally, physically and emotionally exhausting. Miami prides itself on its offseason workouts, especially for young players, and even a 41-year veteran like Udonis Haslem said he won’t get much rest this season. But everyone needs a break, even Heath. We’re not fools, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after the series against Milwaukee. We’ll give them time to rest. That’s how it’s been this season. It has been so hard on everyone in this union. I didn’t know what month it was. I didn’t know it was Memorial Day weekend, and when I mentioned it, several players and staff members were there. It was one of those years. The Heat reopened the rink in May 2020 when the NBA allowed limited workouts to resume, and work here didn’t slow down until Miami was eliminated in the first round of this year’s playoffs against Milwaukee, which ended last weekend. Last spring’s workouts led to an appearance in the NBA’s reboot bubble at Walt Disney World, which led to an appearance in the NBA Finals, immediately followed by Free Agency and draft prep, immediately followed by pre-camp workouts, followed by camp and then the season. Much has been made of the fact that the 71 days between the end of finals and the start of this season were much shorter than usual, but the reality is that very few of those 71 days were free. Now, Riley said, there’s a chance to take a breath. Anyone involved in the NBA family or industry this year should ask themselves how they used to do their job and how they should do it now, Riley said. But in life, like I said, it doesn’t matter what happens to you, it’s about how you deal with it and how you adapt, and everyone has had to adapt. Still, Riley longs for a return to normalcy, which he believes may come next season. He was unable to attend certain events outside of games, which he said set Heat apart from other franchises, such as the charity gala, family celebration, Christmas parties and other events – some for the team, some for sponsors, some for season ticket holders. He even wrote a letter to Andre Iguodala after that season, telling him how sorry he was to have missed his year with the Heat. Iguodala was acquired in February 2020, less than a month before a pandemic forced the league to suspend the season. Next year, when the season starts, hopefully everything will be back to normal, Riley said. Everyone has more than enough free time to recharge their batteries. And when we come back, I’m sure the COVID protocols will still be there, but they won’t be as draconian as they used to be. We’ll see what it is, but I think we’re moving on to bigger and better things. He’s going to rest too. When he returns, work will begin in the summer, and he thinks Heath will find a way to regain suitor status. Have a great summer, Riley said.
