It was the Boston Celtics who were awarded the first pick of the 2017 NBA Draft, and they wasted no time in taking forward Jayson Tatum out of Duke University. The Celtics are hoping that Tatum will be just the spark that makes them relevant again, after their 2015-2016 championship run.
While the New England Patriots fell one win short of a perfect season, their 19-0 record in the regular season and conference title won’t be forgotten. The Patriots’ win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the AFC Championship Game also will be remembered for another reason: The Pats will head to Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta next Sunday for a chance to be the first team to repeat since the 2007-08 New York Giants.
The New England Revolution dominated the Eastern Conference this season, and have the best chance at making the MLS Cup final in their history. The Revolution were the first team in the Eastern Conference to clinch a playoff spot. But, make no mistake, they are not the only team that deserve to be called the best in the East. The New York Red Bulls have won two Supporters Shield titles in the past three seasons, beating out both New England and Toronto FC for the most titles in the East. But, despite their shortcomings this season, the Red Bulls are still one of the best teams in the East.

Another game week, another chance for Bruce Arena’s New England Revolution to rack up points. And they accomplished exactly that, regaining control of the Eastern Conference, the Supporters’ Shield standings, and, most importantly, our Power Rankings. The list of contenders to the Revs’ supremacy is dwindling, with Sporting Kansas City on the verge of losing a key component in their midfield.
So let’s catch up on the remainder of the games and see where your team ranks in our Week 14 Power Rankings.

SKC thrashed LAFC 4-1 in midweek before falling flat against Colorado on Saturday (0-0). The major news, though, was the official revelation that Gianluca Busio, a Homegrown midfielder, had been moved to Venezia in Italy’s Serie A in a transaction that may be worth more than $10 million. Bonagura’s

The Sounders were off this weekend following a midweek stalemate with Dallas, but it was nonetheless a momentous week with the announcement that the club had signed Leo Chu, a 21-year-old Brazilian forward, and Nicolas Benezet, an MLS veteran, on Transfer Deadline Day. Chu, who was brought in via the league’s new U22 program, is a particularly intriguing talent. Bonagura’s

In the 14-team East, Chicago and Toronto are ranked 11th and 14th, respectively. Even though both games were on the road, a double gameweek against such opponents might have netted NYCFC six points. Instead, the Bronx team came away with just two points, surrendering for a 0-0 tie at Soldier Field and letting a two-goal lead slip away in Ontario. That’s a four-point deficit in an Eastern Conference that seems to be widening behind New England. Lindberg’s quote

Going to Foxborough and beating the league-leading New England Patriots is a fantastic achievement for the second-year team. It wasn’t so easy to follow it up with a loss to 2020 expansion counterparts Miami. Lindberg’s quote

The Rapids had a momentous week, as Sam Vines was officially moved to Royal Antwerp in Belgium, and Mark-Anthony Kaye, a Canadian international, made his debut in a 0-0 tie against Sporting Kansas City after being acquired in a trade from LAFC. Colorado has quietly developed one of the league’s finest midfields and is on the verge of a great second half. Bonagura’s

Orlando has only won two of its last eight games, including this week’s 1-1 draws against Cincinnati and Miami. The Lions are still in second place in the East, but with a run like that, it’s easy to understand why New England has a 10-point lead. Lindberg’s quote

D.C. Although the Black and Red are just three points behind second place in an ever-tightening race for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, wins over fellow playoff hopefuls Columbus and Montreal have the Black and Red just three points behind second place in an ever-tightening race to make the postseason. FC Dallas has had two straight good weeks, with a 1-1 draw against Seattle and a 2-0 victory over Austin FC at home. FC Dallas is undefeated in a four-match run that featured the three best clubs in the Western Conference. Dallas is currently outside the postseason picture, but that won’t be the case for much longer if its current run continues. Bonagura’s

In a 4-1 defeat to Sporting Kansas City midweek, a patchwork backline culminated in one of LAFC’s worst-ever performances, followed by a 2-1 loss to San Jose on Sunday. Montreal scored first twice this week, and despite holding a 2-0 lead with less than a half hour left against Atlanta, the Quebecois lost points both times. They hung on for a 2-2 tie against Atlanta at home in midweek, before losing 2-1 in D.C. Lindberg’s quote

If there’s one thing supporters of the Quakes can count on under head coach Matias Almeyda, it’s dramatic swings in form. With defeats to Austin (3-2) and Minnesota (2-0) last week, no one in the Western Conference is flailing quite like the Dynamo, who have now gone 11 games without a victory. The 12-match winless streak is over! After beating Columbus in the Ohio capital, Atlanta is 1W-2D-2L since Gabriel Heinze was dismissed, so maybe the Five Stripes’ standing of 10th in the East isn’t all on the former manager, but a first win in three months is reason enough to feel optimistic about a change in fortune for Josef Martinez, Ezequiel Barco & Co.– Lindberg

Austin ended a three-match goalless drought with a 3-2 victory against Houston in midweek, but then lost 2-0 to FC Dallas the following week. Although all indications lead to the expansion team missing the playoffs, it is only one hot run away from challenging for a postseason spot. Bonagura’s

Toronto’s 3-0 defeat against Philadelphia was the team’s first since manager Chris Armas was fired on July 4th. Despite their comeback from a six-game losing skid, the Reds are 2W-4D-1L with a minus-1 goal differential, which helps explain why they’re still at the bottom of the league standings with the worst goal difference in MLS.
