The women’s college soccer final was held on Sunday evening in Orlando, Florida. The deciding game between the Florida State Seminoles and Santa Clara University Broncos was close throughout, but in the end it was the Broncos who came out on top with a 3-2 win. The Broncos, the national champions of 2013, were celebrating their first win ever over the Seminoles.

The Santa Clara Broncos were in the midst of a dominant run to the NCAA College Cup National Championship, having defeated #1-seeded Stanford, #3-seeded Florida State, and #2-seeded Florida in the last four. However, the Broncos had their worst performance of the season in the Semifinals, losing to UCLA, 2-0. The Bruins, ranked #7 in the nation, were the most talented team the Broncos had faced, and proved to be too much for the Broncos in front of a record-breaking crowd of 16,285 at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Athens, Greece.

The Santa Clara Broncos, the nation’s best team, beat the Florida State Seminoles, the nation’s best team, to win the NCAA women’s soccer championship. The Broncos were led by the outstanding Senior, Mallory Pugh, who scored twice and picked up an assist. She scored the very first goal of the game, and then scored in the dying minutes of the match.. Florida State’s two shots on goal hit the post and opened the door for 11th-ranked Santa Clara, which has not won a national title in women’s soccer since 2001.

Jenna Nighswonger scored in the 63rd minute. Florida State opened the scoring in the 84th minute, but Kelsey Turnbow tied the score in the 84th minute. Santa Clara in the second minute. The Broncos won 4-1 on penalty kicks.

This is the moment we’ve been waiting for. It’s such an unreal feeling, Turnbow said. We had so many problems with this COVID bubble last year. So the hard work, sweat, tears and determination of our team have finally paid off and it feels so good to be champions.

It was the third consecutive game that ended in a shootout for the Seminoles, who won the national title in 2014 and 2018. After a scoreless tie in the semifinals, they defeated a Virginia team on penalty kicks.

It was the sixth time a national championship game had ended in overtime. Only twice has the title fight ended in penalty kicks.

This year was unlike any other and we stuck together as a team. To get this far, to the NCAA finals, is just crazy. I’m so proud of her, said Seminoles midfielder Jaelin Howell. Sure, it’s a little heartbreaking when they have as much possession as we do, score a goal and then have to play a PK.

This season has been particularly difficult for the Broncos due to restrictions in Santa Clara County, California due to coronavirus. The team played just seven regular season games this spring after the West Coast Conference postponed the fall season.

The Seminoles earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament last fall after winning the ACC Tournament.

Former U.S. internationals Ali Wagner and Brandi Chastain, who played for Santa Clara, were among the supporters in Cary. Chastain’s husband is Jerry Smith, the Broncos’ coach.

Smith was also the coach when Santa Clara won its last title.

I’m not an emotional guy, I’m more balanced. You know, we won the national championship in 2001, and I was probably in bed by 8:30, and the next day I started planning for the next year’s games, Smith said. But I’m very proud of my team.Santa Clara’s stunning College Cup win over Florida State on Friday had its roots in an epic semifinal battle between the Broncos and the Seminoles in the first leg of the College Cup in Cary, North Carolina last Thursday..
