The US Army’s latest satellite-based missile warning system has finally arrived at its launch base in Florida. The U.S. Space Force Space Infrared System, or SBIRS GEO 5, has arrived at Cape Canaveral for final preparations for launch next month aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket.
SBIRS’ $5 billion GEO 5 satellite was shipped to Florida from Lockheed Martin’s development center in Sunnyvale, California. The GEO 5 satellite warning system, the country’s main missile warning system, will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to detect missile launches and alert the United States.

SBIRS GEO 5 will join the four other SBIRS satellites previously put into geosynchronous orbit. Lockheed Martin’s GEO satellite system, built by SBIRS, was intended to replace the U.S. Army’s aging missile warning system and support the defense industry.
What the new military satellite will do.
According to C4ISRNet, SBRIS GEO 5 is the first military satellite built on Lockheed Martin’s new LM 2100 combat bus, which the company says will provide enhanced resilience and protection against advanced cyber threats. New satellite technology provides advanced electronics, additional power for spacecraft, and can be easily integrated with new types of space-based sensors to keep pace with innovation and rapidly changing military requirements.
The new early warning satellite is a major milestone in the U.S. Space Force SBIRS program and an important step toward establishing an effective early warning system for the U.S. military. The satellite represents the combined efforts and hard work of the many U.S. space companies that participated in its development. including famous names from the United States.
The arms industry: Lockheed Martin, Aerospace Corporation and Northrop Grumman, as well as numerous suppliers and key defense agency personnel. The new satellite is equipped with state-of-the-art scanning sensors that provide a hemispheric view and provide vital intelligence for hotspots such as Syria, the South China Sea and Iran.
The launch of the new satellite is scheduled for the 17th. planned in May aboard a massive Atlas V rocket. Rocket maker ULA plans up to eight Atlas 5 launches this year, including one on the 17th. the launch of a GEO 5 SBIRS rocket. Another Atlas 5 rocket will take off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, in June.

This is not the first time Lockheed Martin, the lead developer of the SBIRS satellite program, has partnered with an ambitious space program that includes the launch of multiple satellites. The US defence giant also announced this week that it is working with Omnispace Satellite to build a 5G space network. This latest deal with the astronauts puts Lockheed Martin on a collision course with another space giant, Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
