An NBA fan attacked Carmelo Anthony and his NBA career, which has been excellent on an individual level, but not so good when it comes to collective performance. Melo is great, no question, but he hasn’t won an NBA championship yet.

A fan named @russandroses recently made a bold statement about the veteran, saying that Anthony would have won at least three championships had he had LeBron James teams in his career.

Needless to say, this led to a debate, with some fans agreeing with Russ, while others were against Anthony because unlike LeBron James, who proved it with the Miami Heat and the Cleveland Cavaliers, he had no way to win.

The fact that Lebron made it to the finals without All-Stars doubly invalidates this entire argument. Melo was in the opposing team and did not make the final. In 2013, the Knicks shared the season series with the Heat, who have yet to make the playoffs. LeBron dominated the scene

Carmelo Anthony is on the list of the greatest NBA players to ever win a ring. Melo has been on some great teams in his career with the Denver Nuggets and the New York Knicks, but he never took that final step to compete for a championship, and now that he’s 36 years old, his window seems to have closed.

He’s now part of the Portland Trail Blazers, a very interesting team that could have played in the West, but injuries took their toll in recent seasons and prevented them from winning a championship.

We don’t know yet how Melo and his team will fare, but he’s not getting any younger and the competition in the NBA is getting tougher.

MSG analyst Dave Maloney got a message from his daughter this week: What’s wrong with the Rangers?

It’s the same question most Blueshirts fans are asking after the team started the season with a 2-4-1 record. Such is the nature of the NHL’s unforgiving 56-game schedule, where a slow start can seem insurmountable and a five- or six-game loss can kill any hope of qualifying.

It’s the simplest explanation. The Rangers reshuffled their team in February 2018 and have since eliminated nearly all veterans from their 2014 Stanley Cup final team (striker Chris Kreider is the only remaining attacker).

As Maloney, the Rangers’ quarterback in the ’70s and ’80s, notes, it was a whole new approach for New York management. They never tried to build that way, he says. The Rangers, especially over the past two decades, have notoriously strengthened their team by pursuing brilliant free trade officials and trade goals.

Management never set a timetable for the rebuild, but expectations rose when the Rangers won the second pick in the 2019 lottery (on Kaapo Kakko-Land) and the first pick in 2020 (Alexis Lafrenière). Things also gained momentum when they brought in a great free agent, Artemi Panarin, prior to the 2019-20 season. He was so exceptional in his first season that he finished in the top 3 of the league’s MVP rankings.

There is no doubt that the Rangers had legitimate expectations for the postseason this year – or at least that they wanted to take a step forward. Thursday’s thrilling victory over the Sabres, in which Lafrenière scored his first NHL goal in overtime, has eased the panic, but there are some fundamental problems keeping this team from being a true contender. Let’s see what went wrong and what can be corrected.

Goalkeeper or defender?

The easiest starting point for the Rangers is their goalie, who ranks 24th in the league in goals against average (.894) in seven games.

Those of us in [Henrik] Lundqvist’s generation enjoyed spectacular goal scorers night after night, and that was the scariest thing, Maloney said. Not many franchises have had a goalie like that. So it’s not so much what’s going on with [Alexander] Georgiev, but what’s going on with [Igor] Shesterkin. It’s about using this franchise for protectors who were in their own universe compared to the rest of us.

That’s a good point, but the Rangers decided to buy Lundqvist this season largely because they had so much faith in the 25-year-old Shesterkin, who was long considered one of their best hopes. Management also believed strongly in Georgiev, 24, and made it a priority this season to rehire him as a free agent.

Kevin Weeks, longtime NHL goaltender (including two seasons with the Rangers) and NHL Network analyst, says it’s too early to panic given Shesterkin’s background.

I think it’s a pretty relaxed situation for everyone because it’s not his hallmark, Weeks says. Last season in the KHL, Shesterkin made a .953 save percentage before coming to North America. He was so good as an AHL rookie last season that the Rangers drafted him in January and he recorded a .932 save percentage in his first 12 NHL starts.

One thing that’s different now is that he’s letting the goals go through his body, Weeks says. How [opponents] find holes that most NHL goalies don’t – unless you’re going through a tough time. But normal NHL goalies don’t let that happen very often. This makes him look smaller in line, even though he’s not a small guy. I think it’s a safe bet. I know when I’m in position and you know you’re in the right place and the puck somehow finds a hole. When it’s done, you take it. If that happens two or three times, you start to doubt yourself, and before you know it, you’re not playing pucks right, which usually hits you in the body.

Benny has always been a big supporter, you have to stop the first [shot], Weeks said. Don’t worry about the second or the third yet, but you have to stop the first. He works a lot on the guys’ ability to react to the first shot, to be able to make stops on the first shot. And for some reason, that’s not yet the case with Igor.

Mr. Weekes said Allaire is also one of the best in this area by giving the goalies extra time to train, which has been a challenge because of the tight schedule. It’s just different this season, Weeks said. And then someone will say: What about John Gibson [who has done well so far this season]? I know John Gibson skated with [Ducks goalie Sudarshan Maharaj] from the beginning. He’s getting a lot out of it. I’m not saying Igor never skated, but I know it helped John Gibson.

Defense is the next problem for the Rangers. The blue line had been shaken up all last season, and their only way out in the offseason was to trade Mark Staal and replace him with Jack Johnson (who was bought out by the Penguins). Things are moving in the right direction, and the biggest surprise of the season in New York so far is the emergence of rookie K’Andre Miller. The 21-year-old makes a balanced impression and plays with great confidence, especially with Jacob Trouba in the first team.

Johnson has become a target of negativity for fans, especially when he is linked to Tony DeAngelo. So far, both players are healthy reserves.

Johnson has been around for 14 years and has a certain style, Maloney said. The question is this: Is this gonna work with Tony? Is he Mark Staal with Tony? The reality is that he likes to move, he’s overly aggressive at times, and he just understands where things stand.

Will there be other changes?

The Rangers have changed their lineups so often that it sometimes seems like coach David Quinn considers the regular season an extended preseason, something teams lack in this fast-paced season.

It’s a bit like the chicken or the egg. If you win, you don’t have to change anything, Maloney says. There’s a lot to be said for letting things develop a bit. Quinn] wants this combination to work, but there is not enough consistency to stick to a single set of lines.

Last season, Panarin and Ryan Strome formed a magical combination and the Rangers even scored 23 more goals than their opponents when they were on the ice together. Quinn has kept the duo largely intact this season, but he has shared a can in almost every game with his third partner and has regularly put the rest of the line in the blender.

But except for Panarin (eight points from seven games), the best veterans – Strome, Mika Zibanejad, Kreider – are not producing at a high level, and it’s hard to say exactly why.

It’s an obvious question, and an obvious answer: Yeah, we’re not down on our sixes, Quinn said pointedly after Tuesday’s disappointing loss to the Sabres.

Weeks, who attended last week’s game against the Devils in Madison Square, said it flatly.

I don’t know what they look like this year, Weeks said. Last year, as the season progressed, they established their identity and their way of playing. Even without Mika, they played well. And it’s clear that Bradman [Panarin] was New York’s top athlete last year, and Zibanejad was a pain in the ass. You knew what to expect as the season progressed.

This year, they haven’t found their identity yet: What are we, a print team? What are we, a review team? What are we, a team that attacks by surprise? We’re a defensive team – well, we know we’re not. Are we a physical team? Well, Trouba, [Brenden] Lemieux and Kreids have some physical elements, but as a team they just don’t seem to be in sync.

There is no doubt that Rangers have good players and should be a team that relies on its own energy, but they have not been able to hold that energy throughout an entire game – and have often lost confidence and seemed depressed when setbacks struck late.

Lafrenière as first choice. When asked what he sees in Lafrenière, who scored his first goal Thursday night with the winner of extra time, Maloney replied: a 19-year-old who always feels that way. I’m a little nervous.

New Jersey didn’t have an exceptional recruiting season in 2019 either, but it was much better than the second year.

Often in this generation, a top player who is a first-rate pick is considered next, Maloney says. As if [Lafrenière] is the next [Sidney] Crosby because he won an award [in the ULC], just like Sid. Or Kakko becomes the next [Mikko] Rantan in Colorado; it took him two and a half years to get strong enough or something. Not everyone is Sid, and not everyone is McDavid.

Kakko, Maloney noted, is also always guessing. People in the NHL often say it takes about 150 to 200 NHL games to figure out who is really a player; no selected player even comes close to that number. According to The Athletic, the Rangers’ average age this season is 25.6, the lowest in the league. New York has only four players over the age of 27.

If you look at the Islanders, Washington and Boston, those are tough teams, Maloney said. I wouldn’t say the Rangers are a strong team. As they get older, young people get heavier and heavier. They are not as heavy as they will be because they can play. You are not the same person at 19 as you are at 21 and 22, let alone at 23 and 24. So there’s so much here; if you make an honest and unbiased assessment of your situation, there’s a lot that’s not there yet.

So maybe it’s not a matter of fixing what’s wrong, but of releasing the panic button after the unfortunate period at the start of the season.

The investor who drew the world’s attention to GameStop by leading a horde of online gamers during a bizarre market rally that made and lost a fortune overnight says he’s just a regular guy.

34 years old, known as DeepF-ingValue to fans on the WallStreetBets forum on Reddit and Dada to his 2-year-old daughter. He said he was not seeking the attention of Congress, the Federal Reserve, hedge funds, the media, trading desks and hundreds of thousands of investors.

This story is much more important than me, Gill said in his first interview with the Wall Street Journal since the start of the new period of stock market volatility this week. I support these small investors, their ability to make a statement.

For many, Gill, who until recently worked as a marketing executive at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, is the driving force behind GameStop’s triple-digit rise in video game retail shares, which have risen more than 900 percent this year through Thursday. Gill started investing in GameStop in June 2019, when the price was about $5 a share, he said. At the start of the year, the yacht dealer was looking for a fifth frame in just over 12 months. Many people on Wall Street disagreed with Mr. Gill’s optimistic view of GameStop, and received a major blow in response. Hedge funds and other investment professionals have been betting on which stocks will fall.

To bet against stocks, hedge funds borrow shares and sell them, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price and return them. So they can pocket the price difference. But when short stocks go through such a spectacular rally, it becomes painful and they are often forced to exit their positions and buy stocks at a loss. This can lead to a sharp rise in the stock, known as a short squeeze.

The bearish positioning of hedge funds was one of the factors that attracted many small GameStop investors who expected a short squeeze. Mr. Gill said his investment strategy did not depend entirely on short squeeze, but he knew others could potentially bet on him.

So far, professionals have not attributed profits to Gill and other individual investors who have bet large sums on GameStop. Hedge funds like Melvin Capital Management and Maplelane Capital have been burned and ridiculed by the pretentious investors of Reddit.

NEW Orleans — New Orleans captain Lonzo Ball is no stranger to rumors. He spent an entire season with the Los Angeles Lakers listening to how he could do before finally landing with the Pelicans in the summer of 2019. But while Ball had a rough start to the season in 2020-21, his name was once again the talk of the day.

But to his delight, Ball responded with a back-to-back performance. The Pelican scored nine points and four assists in Wednesday’s game against Washington. He hit three three-pointers in the first period while defending Bradley Beal before spraining his ankle and missing the second period.

Ball returned Friday night and played his best game of the season in a 131-126 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks. Ball scored 27 points (his highest point total in a Pelican jersey), seven triples and eight points, his second-highest point total of the season.

I’m staying in the race, Ball said when asked if he had extra motivation this week. I’ve been playing basketball for a long time. I work hard and I just try to play my game. That’s how I play. I just try to stay away from all that noise and go out on the field and try to help my team win games.

Stan Van Gundy, the Pelicans’ coach, said he had talked to Ball earlier this week about cutting down on the noise and playing at a high level.

Nobody likes distractions, but distractions happen all the time, Van Gundy told reporters Wednesday. It’s a business rumor, it’s COVID, it’s family, whatever. Other voices. There are always distractions, and a big part of being successful in this league is focusing on the distractions and doing your job.

David Griffin, executive vice president of basketball operations at the Pelicans, told ESPN radio in New Orleans on Thursday that he believes Ball responded with one of his best series of the year against the Wizards.

I think he realized it’s good that people are calling your name because that means other teams want you, Griffin told the radio station.

For Ball, the answer was to play more aggressively, which his coaches and teammates have been asking him to do all season.

Pelican center Steven Adams, who had 20 rebounds against the Bucks, said when the ball plays aggressively and tries to get into the paint and score, it helps the whole offense.

Adams said he did an excellent job of that. Again, brother, with any player on defense, when you see someone coming at you with that kind of body language and taking that kind of angle, it forces you to make a pretty drastic decision.

That puts you in a difficult situation. Instead of being passive, the defense can be: Honey, I can be passive too. Our guys did a good job with the corners and made sure the defense had to rotate, and then we found an open man from there.

The Pelicans finished the season with 32 assists and Adams provided an offensive spark on Friday. It also helped that the Pelicans were shooting.

In addition to Ball’s big night, his baseline partner Eric Bledsoe also had seven 3s. According to ESPN Stats & Information, Ball and Bledsoe are the fifth starting backcourt in NBA history to hit at least seven three-pointers in a single game, alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson (three times), James Harden and Eric Gordon, Damon Stoudamire and Nick Van Exel, and Michael Dickerson and Cattino Mobley.

If the movement of the ball was the key to the Pelicans’ success on Friday, the will to find the right shot helped as well. And for Ball it was just a matter of shooting when he got the ball. He hit 6 of 9 three-pointers, showing he was willing to look open instead of making an extra pass.

We like to see that, Pelicans forward Zion Williamson said. When he hits the ball with so much confidence, even when he misses, just with the certainty that the ball is going in, that’s what we want from Zo. He scored seven times tonight and they were all important for us.

However, J&J said Friday that its vaccine provides 66 percent protection against moderate to severe disease and 85 percent protection against severe disease, according to a global study. Initial results from AstraZeneca’s trials indicate similar efficacy. Novavax said Thursday that the vaccine is nearly 90% effective.

Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines are approximately 95% effective. It is therefore fortunate that the results of their study were available first, so that the elderly and others most at risk can be vaccinated with their vaccines. But even if they’re slightly less effective, other vaccines may be good candidates for young people and increase supply this spring.

The Speed Strain operation removed the financial risk to drug manufacturers by pre-funding testing and production so that vaccines could be marketed as soon as they were approved. For this reason, about 20 million Americans have already been vaccinated. President

This week, Pfizer and Moderna ordered another 200 million doses to be delivered this summer.

The Warp Speed deal spurred vaccine development and provided an infrastructure for rapid approval and distribution, for which Mr. Biden is likely to take credit as vaccines become increasingly rapid and widespread. Mr. Biden’s team expressed their gratitude by sending Mr. Sloughy through bad news that criticized his good work.

Mr. Slaoui has kindly agreed to stay on as a consultant for a few weeks. He deserves recognition for his outstanding public service, especially since the Biden administration is so ungrateful not to recognize him.

Chinese short video streaming provider Kuaishou Technology raises $5.4 billion The company raised $1 billion in its Hong Kong IPO, reaching its maximum fundraising target after responding to strong investor demand.

Both companies are driving the growing demand from young Chinese to watch and record short videos on their smartphones. The Kuaishou short film platform is the second largest in the world, according to the prospectus, and its services in China had an average of 305 million daily active users in the nine months ending in September.

Quaishou, or quick hand in Chinese, will sell shares at HK$115 ($14.80) per unit, capping a previous margin of HK$105 to HK$115, according to a fact sheet accessed by the Wall Street Journal on Saturday. His shares will trade from 5. February is a month of exchanges.

The IPO will help strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a market for large Chinese technology companies. In recent years, the city has secured IPOs from companies such as Meituan, a leading provider of food delivery and travel booking services, and a smartphone manufacturer.

The Baltimore Ravens were eliminated from the playoffs earlier than expected thanks to the Buffalo Bills, and their off-season will begin with some tough decisions. The team responded by bringing in Mark Ingram, a move that was expected after the loss against the Bills, especially with the emergence of J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards.

Ingram was one of the most beloved members of the Ravens’ team, and his Big Truss speech about Lamar Jackson last season will be considered one of the best clips of all time.

According to Eric DeCosta, CEO of the Ravens, it’s hard to say if there will be any more pay cuts because the salary cap has not yet been set.

The Ravens waived RB Mark Ingram last week, freeing up $5 million in cap space.

The move came as no surprise and the Ravens decided to save money on a player whose role has diminished over the course of the year, although he can still play.

All is not lost for Ingram. He played in 11 Ravens games in 2020, rushing for 299 yards and a pair of touchdowns and finished a 1,000-yard season in just one year.

Ingram, a former Heisman Trophy winner, should have fans in free agency, even if it’s not with the starting position.

3. Buffalo Bills

If Mark Ingram isn’t exactly the horse Buffalo wants, he could be a lot cheaper than, say, Aaron Jones or Chris Carson.

The Bills knocked the Ravens out of the playoffs before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs, but it’s no secret that the Bills’ rushing attack desperately needs help. Devin Singletary and Zach Moss were very disappointing, as the duo ran just 1,100 yards all year.

TJ Yeldon isn’t what he used to be, and the lack of a competitive game has severely diminished the Bills’ chances of making it to the Super Bowl.

Josh Allen played very well, but Brian Daboll and Sean McDermott were very reluctant to run the game all year, especially when Moss was injured and had to miss the last few games of the year.

Buffalo’s offensive core is excellent, so a point guard like Jones may not be needed, but rather a physical line player who can get past tackles and grab extra yards.

Come in, Mark Ingram.

Ingram is exactly the kind of physical player McDermott loves, and Allen would love to give him the ball on 3rd-and-1.

2. Pittsburgh Steel Mills

The Steelers have a lot of questions about free agency. Is Big Ben retiring? Will James Conner be back next season? Will Ticktock legend Juju Smith-Schuster be playing somewhere else?

Either way, the Steelers need more support, and Ingram in Steel City makes a lot of sense.

Conner is still a good fullback and a return to Pittsburgh seems likely, but reinforcement is needed, especially after seeing the games with Benny Snell and Anthony McFarland as hosts.

Ingram could come in and very well become the main guy depending on what the team does with Conner, and Mike Tomlin likes physical players like Mark Ingram.

The best part for the Steelers? You could save money and have a chance to see if Conner comes back or not.

1. Atlanta Hawks

The Falcons will need a strong comeback in the offseason, whatever that may be, especially with Arthur Smith becoming the new head coach in Atlanta.

Todd Gurley’s experience has not been very fruitful, as he ran for 678 yards in his first season in Atlanta. Brian Hill and Ito Smith don’t see themselves as guys who can fill the backfield, as the duo combined for just 733 yards in the 2020 season.

With a new general manager in Terry Fontenot and a new head coach in Smith, Ingram might be better off as a replacement or perhaps a leader. And we all know how much Smith loves his strengths, as Derrick Henry ran for 2,000 yards and Smith was the Tennessee Titans’ offensive coordinator last season.

The Falcons could go after Aaron Jones or Chris Carson, or maybe they could bring back a veteran, but bringing in a seasoned veteran like Mark Ingram would make sense for a team that could have a new quarterback in 2021.

Receivers Calvin Ridley, Julio Jones and Russell Gage are one of the best trios in the league, but the Smith-Hill-Gurley backfield is one of the worst in the league, and that needs to change if the Falcons want to keep up.

AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE Liverpool seeks replacement for Wijnaldum

It seems increasingly likely that Georginio Wijnaldum will leave Liverpool FC this summer. Fabrizio Romano has named two players who could take his place if the Dutch international leaves Anfield.

That means Jurgen Klopp and his team will be thinking about replacements, with the Transfer journalist saying that Yves Bissouma and Renato Sanchez, from Brighton & Hove Albion and Lille respectively, are the top two targets.

Romano also suggested that Liverpool could consider a move from the centre-back in the coming days following Joel Matip’s injury in Thursday’s 3-1 Premier League win against Tottenham Hotspur.

Possible loan exchange between Sanchez and Dzeko

Alexis Sanchez and Edin Jekko have had their own issues of late and could switch places temporarily, according to Sky Sports.

Internazionale are currently negotiating a loan swap that would send Sanchez to Rome and Jacko to Milan.

Christian Eriksen was reportedly initially to take Sanchez’s place at Roma, but Inter were not interested in replacing the midfielder with a striker.

The January window isn’t over yet, but Calciomercato are reporting that AC Milan are already making offers for the summer.

The Rossoneri have long been fans of Florian Thauvin, whose contract at Marseille expires in the summer.

Therefore, they have offered the Frenchman a four-year contract that should bring him €2.8 million per season.

They have also joined Otavio in Porto, whose contract also expires in the summer. The 25-year-old was offered a contract of the same length for a fee of 1.5 million euros.

– Saint-Etienne are hoping to sign Besiktas striker Syl Larin, according to Foot Mercato. The 23-year-old is determined to get more game time to boost his chances of joining Gareth Southgate’s squad for this summer’s European Championships. If he is allowed to leave, Wolverhampton Wanderers could be interested after they tried to sign Maitland-Niles in the summer.
