Fulham 1-0 Sheffield United: Ademola Lookman goal boosts Cottagers’ hopes of survival

Ademola Lookman scores Ademola Lookman was directly involved in more goals in the Premier League this season than any other Fulham player (4 goals, 3 assists).

Ademola Lookman’s goal gave Fulham an important victory over Sheffield United in the Premier League.

The Cottagers remain 18th but have narrowed the 10-point gap on 17th-ranked Newcastle to just three points in a week.

Scott Parker’s team dominated for long periods of time, but it took them a while to close the bag.

Joachim Andersen’s depth pass was excellently picked up by Lookman, who took advantage of Ethan Ampadu’s weak defense to shoot in front of Blades goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Earlier, Reuben Loftus-Cheek had passed defender George Baldock after he passed Ramsdale.

And although goalkeeper Alfons Areola blamed the absence of Enda Stevens, who failed to score the equalizer, on the host nation, they secured their second win in the top division this season at Craven Cottage.

Is Fulham starting to believe it?

Fulham have lost only one of their last seven top games, but their biggest problem is turning credible draws into wins.

Only Brighton had more ties than Parker, and until Lookman was the deciding moment of the match, it seemed to be another case of disappointment for them.

But after eight points from their last 12 games, Parker believes his team now has a chance to catch up with the clubs ahead of them.

Newcastle, which plays at Old Trafford on Sunday, is the most obvious target, but opponents such as Brighton and Burnley are also considered.

A third goal without a goal against in the last four games is a good sign in this regard, but Parker is also aware that his team needs to improve in front of goal.

Only six of fifteen shots hit the target, with Lookman, Loftus-Cheek and Mario Lemina having good chances to increase the lead.

“Ridiculous VAR decision.

Prior to that match, Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder said the loss of “eight or nine great players” was a setback this season.

And when Chris Basham limped off the field after 51 minutes, it was hard not to feel sorry for the Blades, who have now lost 20 of 25 games on the season.

Without John Egan and Jack O’Connell, who were long absent, they looked like the team that had the fourth-best defense in the first division last season.

In Basham’s absence, Ampadu returned to the defense and his mistake ended up costing the Blades at least a point.

But it would be a mistake to blame him, because Fulham and Sheffield United have been trying to find a formula all season that allows them to score goals.

Billy Sharp’s volley in the second half of last season or Stevens’ goal attempt may have been triggers, but the meager number of 15 goals in 25 games has shown little sign of improvement in this period,

And the late decision not to award a penalty after the VAR review when Jayden Bogle attacked Areola was symptomatic of a campaign in which they didn’t have too many happy moments.

“We had a chance to get back in the match and we didn’t take it,” Wilder said.

“And then we had a ridiculous VAR decision. I thought it was a reckless foul by the Fulham keeper. It’s a penalty. Yes, I’m a bit down, but it was a penalty on the day. There’s no doubt about it.

“I see a completely different game. Snapshots and a slow look, how can VAR not see that? I don’t care if he’s with the Braves or somewhere else. It was a ridiculous challenge. It cost us another subtle advantage.”

A “huge” victory, that’s what they said.

Fulham boss Scott Parker told Match of the Day: “It was a big win for us tonight, a monumental win. There is a lot of emotion in the team when it comes to understanding the significance of this evening”. The most important thing is the result.

“The game has always been based on opportunity. Those who have watched us know that we have played games where the difference is in the beautiful pitches. This team has real conviction and I want us to focus on ourselves.

“The quality we have will ultimately help us get results in this competition. We are a young team that wants to improve and develop. There is something in us that is needed in times like these.

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder told Sport: “We thought we could get something out of the game. We have to play the game again, no matter the divisional position or drop out. We have to be professional and have pride and character.

“There is a bigger vision in all of this. Most people understand where we are as a soccer club, this is our third Premier League season in 20 years and to be realistic it doesn’t look like we will have a fourth.

Fulham’s home advantage is back – Statistics

  • Fulham recorded only their second home win in the Premier League in 14 games (W2 D4 L8) and their first since the win over West Brom in November.
  • Sheffield United have won only two of their 28 Premier League games in London (D8 L18): at Chelsea (2-1) in October 1992 and at Crystal Palace (1-0) in February 2020.
  • Sheffield United has conceded fewer goals this season than any other team in the Premier League (1).
  • Fulham have won two of their last three Premier League games (D1), which is as many as in their last 24 games (W2 D9 L13).
  • Ademola Lookman was directly involved in more goals in the Premier League this season than any other Fulham player (4 goals, 3 assists).
  • The Fulham marksman has scored four goals in 22 Premier League appearances this season – only in 2017-18 (five in 11 Bundesliga appearances) has he scored more goals in the top flight.

What is the next step?

Fulham travel to Crystal Palace on Sunday, February 28 (12:00 CET) for another Premier League match.

Sheffield United host Liverpool at Bramall Lane for their next meeting at the top of the league table on the same day (19:15 GMT).

Oscar Valdez is ready for Miguel Berchelt

7:00 A. M. (EASTERN TIME)

Mark Kriegelespan

The seduction of Frank Espinoza – from Simmons Avenue to East Los Angeles, accidental member of the City Terrace gang, son of a welder whose hands were paralyzed by arthritis – began when he was a teenager in his mid-sixties on his first visit to the Grand Olympic Auditorium, 1801 S. Grand Avenue.

He remembers many fight posters, one of which showed a champion of the time and future champion named Mando Ramos, who fought a total of 27 times at the 1965-1973 Olympics. The pale yellow walls were shiny and bumpy. The air was thick, brownish and stale from unfiltered cigarettes. Men in hats and short sleeves held bundles of worn bills. The poles were shabby and continuous. Pabst Blue Ribbon boxes became makeshift projectiles if the crowd felt the action wasn’t bloody enough.

Espinoza was immediately suspended. “I knew right away that I wanted to be a boxer,” he said.

10 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN and ESPN+: Miguel Berchelt against Oscar Valdez, 12 sets, for the WBC Junior Lightweight World Title.

More than half a century later, Espinoza has fought more than 100 fighters, all Mexican or Mexican-American, including 10 champions. The first, Isidro Garcia, was eating a hot dog and drinking a Coke in the stands of Fantasy Springs Casino when he was invited to fight for the WBO Welterweight title because his opponent had just given up. The latest is Oscar Valdez, two-time Mexican Olympic champion and former welterweight champion. Valdez fights his old friend and neighbor Hermosillo’s WBC junior bantamweight champion Miguel Berchelt, the bogeyman of the division, on Saturday in Las Vegas.

You will therefore hear many edicts of absolute authority on the “Mexican warriors,” warriors whose pride dictates that they never retreat. This is a theme Espinoza learned the hard way. “The guys I compare to Oscar and Berchelt are Vasquez and Marquez,” he says.

He is referring to Rafael Marquez and Israel Vasquez, whom he managed. Their fights took place between 2007 and 2010, with the second and third fights being named “Fight of the Year” by Ring magazine (among others)-despite their impressive brutality, of course, but mostly because of it.

Error. specified.Frank Espinoza, non-director, signed the Oscar Valdez in the summer of 2012. Boxing Espinoza

I remember Vasquez in his home in Huntington Park after his third fight. Earlier that morning, the stitches had been removed – at least two dozen. He was not in a good mood – judging by the purple slit on his red eye – but he was in a good mood.

“They were not deep,” he says of his wounds. “I’m happy.”

In fact, his satisfaction bordered on ecstasy. A few years earlier, a promoter had advised Espinosa to send Vazquez back to Mexico City – that he had no future as a fighter in the United States. Espinosa had a hunch, however, and had the man stay home for about a year.

Vasquez was a man with two sons. He had his own house. He imprisoned his wife in the beauty parlor with his winnings. And he had just won the fight of the year.

Problem is, he wanted to start again, a fourth fight with Marquez. “I didn’t want him to fight again,” Espinoza said, “but I couldn’t stop him. He felt his honor was at stake.”

He would lose the fourth fight. And a few years later, he lost his right eye during surgery.

Espinoza doesn’t like to talk about it, but I wonder if she tells her curious mother about his reputation as a cheater (only in boxing) because he “keeps” his fighters. Among those she whispers to is Valdez, who – to some extent – wants to be the archetype of the Mexican warrior.

In 2018, Valdez took on Scott Quigg, weighing nearly four pounds too much to fight for the featherweight title. Espinoza asked him to stop the process. Valdez wanted no part of it.

In the fifth round, Quigg broke his jaw. It was a horrific fracture that made it impossible for the coaches to remove his mouthpiece, and his mouth turned into a bloody lagoon. But over the next seven rounds, Valdez responded that his attack would continue and that he would win unanimously.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted since I was a kid,” he told me the following year.

He wasn’t talking about hugging the jaws. He was talking about recognition at home in Mexico, where more than a few fans thought Olympic-style boxing was, well, sweet. “Everyone sees me as a fighter, a true champion,” he said. “And sometimes that’s worth more than money.”

After the battle of Quigga – Valdese’s third consecutive “war” – Espinoza begged him to hire the famous Eddie Reynoso as his coach. The idea was that Reynoso, best known for his work with Canelo Alvarez, would prolong his career by making Valdez a better defensive boxer. But the results have been mixed so far.

Berchelt, on the other hand, is what he is: bigger, stronger and 5 inches taller, the scariest fighter in the 130-pound division. “Everybody thinks he’s a monster,” Valdez told me this week. “I don’t think so. He hasn’t boxed against anyone who can box yet. He’s slower. I see a lot of openings.”

Still, Valdese believes on some level that he can beat Berchelt Warrior. The only time Berchelt has been knocked out is in the first round against a certain Luis Flores in 2014 – he was knocked out. Valdez was knocked out twice and won unanimously and by technical knockout each time. Here’s the jaw. But that’s not all.

“I fought twice with a broken rib,” he said, referring to the injuries he suffered in the fights for his first title defense and his fierce fight against Miguel Marriaga. “It’s something I never said before because I didn’t want to make excuses.”

But now he wants Berchelt to know.

“He didn’t go through what I went through,” Valdez says. “I don’t think, ‘What if it happens again?’ But I do know that if I can fight through a broken jaw or a broken rib or get out of the web, I know I can still do it.’ I know I’m going to make it to the top because of my state of mind. Losing is never an option.

He stands 28-0.

I will ask him about Espinosa.

“My family,” he says. “He worries about me. But he worries a lot.”

For his part, Espinoza hopes the Nevada State Athletic Commission will allow him to do his usual duty. He likes to put his fighters in the ring, give each their mouthpiece and send them into battle. But he’s not sure what the officials will allow in the upper bubble.

It’s not that he cares that much about the bubble. Nor is it that he lives in the past. But for one night he will miss cigarettes and beer, the seductive stench of general bloodlust. He will miss the men in hats who waved bills, the profane oaths they took and the patriotic oaths:

Mexico, Mexico, Mexico…

“A fight like that,” says Frank Espinoza, “would be great for the Olympics.”

Patriots’ Rumored TE Target Shares Free-Agency Priorities

Hunter Henry

If the New England Patriots want to sign Hunter Henry to a free agent contract this season, as many suspect, the team may have to offer him more than money.

The 26-year-old, who played the first five years of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers, made it clear that the basis for his decision to go free agency goes beyond money.

Henry told SiriusXM NFL:

I’d be lying if I didn’t just say, “I’m not even looking at the money” or something like that. That’s part of it. It’s part of our job and everything else, but I don’t think it’s just that. I want to play at a position with a good quarterback. It’s really important for our position. It makes it a lot easier … Playing with a good quarterback always makes it better. You have to look at both. You have to look at some financial things, but you shouldn’t spend too much time on that, because I want to play with a good quarterback, too.

Tight End Hunter’s free agent Henry explained his approach to Free Agency and shared his thoughts on the franchise label. ….

“I want to play somewhere where they have a good quarterback.”

– SiriusXM NFL Radio (@SiriusXMNFL) February 19, 2021

Many would assume that Henry’s priorities would exclude the Patriots unless they contracted or traded for a veteran quarterback who would meet Henry’s needs. You also have to wonder if other free agents would see it that way.

Follow the Heavy on Patriots Facebook page for the latest news, rumors and content!

BQ Options

The only Patriots quarterbacks under contract for the 2021 season are Jarrett Stidham and Jake Dolegala. He remains the type of player who will attract the best free agents.

If the Patriots could bring in a star like Deshaun Watson of Houston, Texas, or Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons, it would be a different story. Both Watson and Ryan have reputations and resumes of the kind that attract people who are at the end of their rope, like Henry and some of the best wide receivers available.

Even if the Patriots slow down and track down Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers or strike a deal that gets them Marcus Mariota from Las Vegas, Hunter and other free agents may be more inclined to sign with New England.

Cam Newton, that’s a different story. There are probably players in the league who still believe in Newton and others who don’t. It’s not clear which side of the fence Henry will be on in this scenario.

Henry needs to stay healthy.

Although he has his criteria for a team that wants to contract him, Henry should manage to become a bit more constant on the pitch in the coming years.

Henry missed two games in 2020, four in 2019 and missed the entire 2018 season after tearing his ACL. The four games he missed in 2019 were due to a knee fracture. Lifetime will be the rule for anyone who decides to give Henry a chance.

If he’s in good health, he could give the Patriots what they so sorely lack: a tight game that excels in both receiving and blocking. Henry is all over the place after a season in which he allowed 60 receptions, 613 yards (another career record) and four touchdowns.

If the Patriots had gotten this kind of production from bits and pieces, they might not have looked like this season.

Expect Buffalo Bills’ tight end room to feature new faces in 2021 – Buffalo Bills Blog

Marcel Louis-Jacques-Pin

BUFFALO, N.Y.. – Brandon Beane made no bones about it during his end-of-season press conference in January, especially when it came to the Buffalo Bills’ details.

The general manager just saw his Bills defense burn the NFL’s best end for the second time in the 2020 season, and he admitted that no player on his team can compare to Kansas City’s Travis Kelce. The combination of Tyler Croft, Lee Smith and third-round pick Dawson Knox resulted in 442 yards and eight touchdowns for the 2020 season, which should convince Beane to improve this offseason.

http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Tales-from-baddest-defense-20th-anniversary-of-Ravens-first.jpg

– Rankings of the 50 best free agents
” – Key decisions to come regarding free agents” –

all 32 teams this offseason” – More about free agents

“We never got the job,” Beane said. “Toward the end of the year, I thought we got some done, Dawson started getting his groove on. But it was never the position where the defenders thought, ‘Dude, you’ve got to prevent their tight ends from getting airborne.’ So we’re going to take care of this group.

“At the end of the day, we want a guy like the one we just met in Kansas City to rarely come by. But that’s what we want. We have guys here who want to grow and see what happens. If there’s an opportunity to add competition, whether it’s through free agency or through the draft, obviously we’ll do that.

To be fair, Buffalo suffered setbacks last season.

Knox, 24, came into the season after a promising rookie campaign in which he lost 20 percent of his passes in the league, but he showed a talent for playmaking that prompted Beane to trade him in 2019. Although his passing percentage dropped significantly, Knox missed four games in 2020 due to a calf injury and COVID-19, making it difficult for him to find his rhythm.

Kroft, on the other hand, was placed on the reserve list/COVID-19 twice, once as a close contact and once after registering a positive test. He played ten games, but was a good help when all the Bills’ weaknesses were healthy.

Beane mentioned the addition of competition in the offseason, and there are several options.

Buffalo should keep an eye on a few notable veterans this season, starting with Jonnu Smith, who essentially matched the Bills’ tight end single last season (he had 41 catches, 448 yards and eight touchdowns). According to Spotrac, Smith’s market value is $8 million per year, which means a higher price for the Buffaloes this season. Since the NFL’s salary cap will be at least $180 million, accounts could range from $1 million above the cap to about $4 million below it, as some decisions are made by their own agents. Buffalo’s amount to Smith could depend on how he plans to improve his position.

Fault. specified.Tiper Croft had 12 receptions for 119 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games during the 2020 season. Brian M. Bennett/Getty Images

Philadelphia’s Zach Ertz would be commercially available, reports ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. Perhaps as the 2020 season approaches, the Bills should look for a player who has put up 700 or more receiving yards in six consecutive seasons.

Bills could also look to the bill to improve their flexibility. The gem in the 2021 class is Florida’s Kyle Pitts, but with the number 30 pick, it is highly unlikely that the Bills will trade him for the Tighter, who should be a top 10 pick.

ESPN Project Analyst Mel Kiper Jr. suggested several options for Buffalo later in the project, and suggested Penn State’s Pat Fryermuth as a possible second-round pick. The 6-foot, 90-pound tight end could have an immediate impact on the Bills’ passing offense if they decide to put No. 61 on it. Kiper also lists Boston College’s Hunter as a third-round option, as well as Georgia’s Kenny Yeboah Tre’ McKitty or Mississippi’s Kenny Yeboah as fifth-round options.

Whatever path Beane decides to take, expect the Bills’ tight end to look a little different at the end of training camp.

WWE Elimination Chamber results, grades: The Miz wins WWE Championship

WWE superstar The Miz wins the WWE Championship at Elimination Chamber

‘Genius’ acquisition for the A-Lister (Photo: WWE).

The Elimination Chamber shockingly showed The Miz cashing in his bank account and pinning Drew McIntyre for the World Cup.

The Scottish psychopath went through hell that night after entering one of society’s most impressive and dangerous environments. He defeated five former world champions to retain the gold.

But Miz – who withdrew from the chamber race on Raw because of his guaranteed chance at the title – pulled off another great coup to start his second race to the top.

It was an exclamation point on fantastic pay-per-view television and a stellar main event that began with longtime rivals Jeff Hardy and Randy Orton in the middle of the crowd.

The match was filled with fantastic references to the shared history of six opponents – including Kofi Kingston, Sheamus and AJ Styles, the latter having been eliminated.

In a particularly brilliant moment, Phenomenal Omo’s assistant ripped the door off his pod to help him get in early to try to take advantage of Randy Orton’s RKO party, despite being fired backstage by WWE official Adam Pierce.

Although the surprise many expected from “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt failed to materialize, the company kept fans interested by bringing McIntyre’s second race for the world championship to a shocking conclusion.

After Miz – who also had trouble cooking Bad Bunny – was spotted backstage with MVP, it was only natural that Bobby Lashley of Hurt Business would be involved.

The former U.S. champion – who had previously lost his own title to Riddle – eventually destroyed a severely weakened Drew, paving the way for Mr. Argent on the bench to cash in the title and steal the gold.

Daniel Bryan wins, Roman Reigns benefits, and Edge books a ticket to WrestleMania.

The WWE launched the elimination chamber with seriousness by hosting a big match in the hellish structure.

Daniel Bryan and Cesaro began a duel with the rest of the group, and the action built, with everyone playing their roles perfectly.

Sami Zayn was the comic cement that held the match together as he showed off his skills, and the six men did more than enough with some innovative moments.

It was a duel between Bryan and Jay Uso, which the former won, giving him a chance at the world championship, which happened much earlier than expected when Roman Reigns came on board.

Spiritual Bryan engaged in a brief battle, but in the end the tribal chieftain brilliantly strangled his opponent on the cheap to continue his rise to WrestleMania.

The real shock was yet to come when Edge appeared out of nowhere to hit the Dukes with his spear and make his intentions known after winning the Royal Rumble last month.

The second race, which was worth watching, was a very entertaining sprint. Bobby Lashley, Riddle and John Morrison – Keith Lee’s replacement after the kickoff victory – put on a great display.

It’s also a good thing, because EAST WWE and Legit Boss don’t need the tag titles to be a distraction, while the bands themselves shouldn’t be involved in another feud.

Who needs a fresh start for every team

NFL Nation

With one month to go until the start of NFL 2021 Free Agency, all 32 teams have decisions to make about what their team could look like next season. Among them are players who could benefit from a different environment – free agents, strike candidates and players who could be traded – and who could flourish elsewhere.

Will Super Bowl champion Leonard Fournette, who excelled in the postseason for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, return? Are the Chicago Bears officially done with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky? What will the Houston Texans do in rebuilding with quarterback Deshaun Watson? What about Odell Beckham Jr. playing for the Cleveland Browns after tearing the ACL?

Maybe it’s the money, maybe it’s the production. Or maybe it’s both. Sometimes a player just needs to go somewhere else. Here are 32 players our NFL reporters say would benefit from leaving their current team:

Chidobi Awuzi’s corner

Teams don’t like to give up second-round picks, but sometimes they just go their own way. Avuzi has had four interceptions in four seasons and has started 42 games. The free agent could get more at another team than the Cowboys can afford, and he could have more success elsewhere. — Todd Archer

Evan Engram.

Engram won the Pro Bowl in 2020, but that doesn’t reflect the way his year went. He went through all the tough times with eight dropouts and failed to excel under Joe Judge and a new coaching staff. Despite his potential and enticing talent, things didn’t really work out for Engram in his four years with the Giants. A change of scenery can be good for everyone in this case. — Jordan Ranan

Zach Ertz, the tightrope walker.

Negotiations to extend the contract between Ertz and the Eagles overshadowed last season, and a trade now seems inevitable. Ertz, 30, is limited to 11 games in 2020 due to injury and has had a difficult year, but he has been one of the most productive players of his career. He will be doubly motivated next season as he tries to reestablish himself as one of the best at his position and prove to his new team that he is worth the investment. He has one year left and his contract is expected to be worth $8.25 million. — Tim McManus

Linebacker Ryan Kerrigan

That’s not just because his role changed last season with the arrival of rookie Chase Young alongside second-seeded Montez Pot. That means Kerrigan, Washington’s 95.5 sack leader, has become an infielder for the first time in his career. He will be an unrestricted free agent and still wants to get going. At the beginning of last season, he was frustrated with the number of snaps played; although his snaps have finally increased, he still thinks he can help out in a bigger role. To get that role, he would have to leave the franchise where he was recruited in the first round in 2011. – John Keim

Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky

Bears and Trubiskies need a clean slate. Much of Chicago will never forgive the team for ranking second overall to Trubisky in 2017, ahead of true franchise players Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. Trubisky is clearly not at their level, but he has played well at times over the past four years (especially against weaker opponents). Trubisky’s time with the Bears is effectively over. The 26-year-old quarterback should prefer a situation where he can compete for the starting position or be a key replacement. Chicago is no longer the place to be. Jeff Dickerson

The tight end Jesse James

It is unclear whether the new plan, which has a four-year, $22.6 million contract through 2019 signed by former CEO Bob Quinn, will be enforced. James is averaging less than one strike per game (30 strikes in 32 games) and has scored a total of two touchdowns in two seasons. With T.J. Hockenson clearly dominating the situation, it may be best for both sides to move on. The warning would be the new offensive coordinator, Anthony Lynn. If he prefers two ends, James can stay and start over. But it might be better for Detroit to consider another option. — Michael Rothstein

http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/All-the-rumors-news-deals-and-reaction.png&h=110&w=110.png

Kevin King, the cornerback

From the beginning, King was often criticized. The Packers could have taken the favorite T.J. Watt, but instead traded up in the first round and picked King with their first pick in the second round of the 2017 draft. Injuries kept King on the sidelines throughout his first two seasons and he never developed any consistency. In the meantime, Jaire Alexander blossomed on the other side. King, who is headed for free agency, is best known for his jersey grab that led to a penalty in the final minutes of the 2020 NFC Championship game that prevented Aaron Rodgers from taking the final shot in the race for victory. Cornerback will be a big need even if King doesn’t go to free agency, but it will probably be a mistake to bring him back. — Rob Demovsky

Wrong!!! Lovie is no specified.Kevin King, who was a second-round draft pick in 2017 and had a tough game against the Bucs in the NFC title game. He’s a free agent this season. Kyle Rudolph

The veteran said in a podcast a few weeks ago that he wasn’t ready to restructure his contract for the 2021 season and that he “can’t sign for the role he’s played in the offense the past two years” because his targets were declining because he was no longer a red zone threat. Rudolph has been a part of the Minnesota landscape since 2011, but a split would benefit both sides. The Vikings could save up to $8 million, depending on when he’s released, and Rudolph, 31, would have the chance to end his career in a crime that can use him more than just his blocking abilities. — Courtney Cronin

The Return of Todd Gurley

Gurley has run for fewer than 695 yards in his career and averaged fewer than 3.5 yards per throw in 2020, despite playing in 15 games. However, he told reporters that he was happy to stay in Atlanta and play for new coach Arthur Smith, who has built the Titans’ offense around Derrick Henry. Gurley, however, has done nearly 1,500 carries in six years and suffers from arthritis in his left knee, which could end his day job with the horses. He has just 14 carries in his last three games, Brian Hill has 21 and Ito Smith 19. The Falcons may be able to call on other backs, meaning Gurley, who is expected to become a free agent in March, may be better off elsewhere. — Michael DiRocco

The tight end Ian Thomas

Thomas did not live up to his expectations to replace Greg Olsen. He caught only 20 passes for 145 yards last season and only 72 passes for 614 yards in three seasons. He was not a product of Joe Brady’s scheme and the Panthers need a tough game plan like Travis Kelce from Kansas City to take this offense to the next level, whether they stick with Teddy Bridgewater or trade him for a quarterback like Deshaun Watson. — David Newton

The Jared Cook Tight End

The Saints cannot contract all of their free agents because of high salary cap constraints, and Cook appears to be the most likely casualty. Although he hit 16 touchdowns in two seasons in New Orleans, his output declined in 2020, including a costly loss against the Saints in the playoffs. He turned 34 in April, and the Saints hired a likely replacement last year in the person of Adam Troutman. — Mike Triplett

Don’t get me wrong, the Bucks love Lenny, who has now become Lenny Lombardi thanks to his integral role in all 448 postseason games and the Bucks Super Bowl. Robert Alford’s Corner

Alford has not played for the Cardinals since he signed a three-year contract through the 2019 season as a free agent due to an end-of-season injury. The Cardinals paid him $10.4 million during that time and plan to pay him another $7.45 million in 2021. Alford will receive $9 million, but only $1.5 million in dead money, so it makes sense to waive him and save the ceiling. And since it’s unlikely the Cardinals will call on cornerback Patrick Peterson again, it might be the right decision for the team to start from scratch. There’s no guarantee that Alford will be healthy this season. — Josh Weinfuss

Gerald Everett

In 2017, Everett made four second-round picks but failed to make them stand out despite some excellent performances. Last year, the Rams selected Brysen Hopkins in the fourth round, a decision that seemed to indicate that Everett’s time in the organization might be limited. Having spent his entire career behind starter Tyler Higbee, the new start might be the best for Everett, who has caught 127 passes for 1,389 yards and eight touchdowns in his career. — Lindsey Tyree

Corner of Akello Witherspoon.

Witherspoon is expected to become a free and unrestricted runner after four seasons on the roller coaster in San Francisco. He has shown that he can be a good rookie in the league, but he has not been able to do everything consistently and has been a good pickup at times in 2020. If Witherspoon played well when he had the chance, a fresh start elsewhere might be what he needs to reach his potential if the Niners invest elsewhere to bolster their cornerback squad. — Nick Wagoner

End of defense Carlos Dunlap

Dunlap doesn’t need to change environments so much as he needs to explore the market for his services. The Seahawks want him back because he helped boost their passing rush with five sacks and 14 QB hits in eight games after he was acquired in October, but his $14.1 million cap is prohibitive. Dunlap has clearly enjoyed his stay in Seattle, but neither side will want to extend him without knowing how much the other teams are willing to pay for the 32-year-old setter. It would be no surprise if the Seahawks fired Dunlap before his $3 million bonus expires in March and then tried to fire him if the market didn’t give him what he was hoping for. Brady Henderson.

End of defense Trent Murphy

The Bills are sticking with Murphy despite his $9.7 million last year, in part because rookie AJ Epenesa needed time to acclimate. But Murphy was active in only 10 games in 2020 and missed almost the entire latter part of the Buffalo season, in which he played his best defensive soccer. He is a free agent this season and has probably played his last games in Buffalo. But he is only 30 years old and his playing days are not over yet. — Marcel Louis-Jacques

The Return of Matt Breida

The Dolphins’ fifth-round selection in the exchange against Breida initially created excitement, but proved to be a bust. He still has lightning speed and the ability to make plays in the backfield, but he had just 68 hits for 350 yards last season, as he fell behind second-year defender Myles Gaskin and finally rookie defender Salvon Ahmed to make plays in the backfield. Breida is a free agent and is expected to go to another team while the Dolphins try to regain their feature film, likely via the Draft. — Cameron Wolfe

The kicker Justin Rohrwasser

After the Patriots selected him in the fifth round of the 2020 draft, making him a first-round draft pick, Rohrwasser was unable to make it to training camp because veteran Nick Faulk was called up in his place. Rohrwasser, who made headlines with a tattoo from his time at Marshall University, was on the practice squad all season and now faces additional competition after bringing in Roberto Aguayo at the end of the season. Linebacker Jordan Jenkins

The free agent on standby is the longest serving member of the team (drafted in 2016), which means he has had many seasons of defeats – a record of 23-57. No player deserves such a big loss. Jenkins, who has been a 3-4 road defender throughout his professional career, does not fit the new 4-3 pattern, which means he will likely move on. He is a solid player when healthy, and he deserves a fresh start. Rich Cimini.

Scura, who is a free agent this season, lost his starting job midway through last season after having problems with breaks in the Pistol formation. His family received several threatening messages from fans on social media after bad scrimmages led to the Ravens’ defeat against New England. A.J. Green Wide receiver

Green played his first season under coach Zach Taylor after missing the 2019 season due to an ankle injury. He received just 47 passes for 523 yards with two touchdowns. Green struggled to find a rhythm in the offense and talked about the challenges this system presents to him. Since Green received an official pass in the team’s final season, it makes sense that he would look for another team for his 11th season in the NFL. — Ben Baby

Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.

Because of the injury coverage in his contract, it’s unlikely the Browns will break with OBJ this season. But since joining the Giants in 2019, he has struggled to get close to quarterback Baker Mayfield and stay healthy. Beckham has shown that he still has a lot of talent, but since the Browns were successful last season without him in the offense, it made sense for him and the team, at least financially, to find a replacement. — Jake Trotter

The Return of James Conner

His return in 2018 was the subject of much discussion when he did a Pro Bowl season for Le’Veon Bell. Since then, however, Conner has been unable to match those numbers due to recurring injuries and a generally ineffective running game. In his four seasons, Conner has never played a full game with 16 players, and in his last four starts he has averaged just 28 yards per game. Conner is a free agent this season, and he and the Steelers could use a fresh start. Brook Pryor

Quarterback Deshaun Watson

Watson may not want to be traded to Houston, but he has made it clear to the Texans that he wants a change of scenery. Watson asked for a trade in January because he was dissatisfied with the way the team was being managed. Both publicly and privately, the Texans said they didn’t want to sell the quarterback’s franchise, but if he really doesn’t play for the team anymore and Houston refuses to move him, will he stay out the season? If they don’t trade him, the Texans will find out. Sarah Barshop.

Malik Hooker Security

Hooker, selected in the first round in 2017, showed promise in his first season with three interceptions before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in Week 7. Since then, however, he has been more flashy than creative. He has made just four interceptions in the last three seasons, including an incredible one-handed pick against Philip Rivers in the first round of the 2019 season. Hooker ended the 2020 season after two games due to a torn Achilles tendon. His injury history, combined with rookie Julian Blackmon’s emergence with two interceptions last season, paved the way for Hooker to try to continue his career elsewhere. — Mike Wells

Quarterback Gardner Minshew …

The Jaguars should be the first choice for Trevor Lawrence, so Minshew’s playing time in Jacksonville is over. The best he can hope for is to be Lawrence’s replacement. He is far from a finished product like a BQ and could eventually become a starter. Maybe the Jaguars can jettison him in exchange for a late pick so he can find a starting job elsewhere. — Michael DiRocco

Corey Davis Wide receiver

To be clear, this is not an assumption that the Titans will not fire Davis or that he will not be fit. He escaped last season, but he fell 16 yards short of the 1,000-yard mark. Imagining a player with Davis’ skills in a more passive offense conjures up visions of over 80 yards receiving and over 1,000 yards. Davis, the 5th overall pick in the 2017 draft, is a free agent at guard who should attract attention when he goes to free agent. — Turron Davenport

Yes, Gordon led the team in carries (215), running yards (986) and running touchdowns (9) last season, but he is suspended three games in 2021 after being arrested for drunk driving. Gordon also had a limited impact in the passing game – an area the Broncos thought he would help when he was signed – and led the team with four tackles in the loss. The Return of Le’Veon Bell.

Bell had virtually no influence over the chiefs after he joined them at the beginning of the season. The Chiefs had a chance to ask him for help. Quarterback Derek Carr

Make no mistake: this is not the Raiders’ parting with a player who holds nearly every pass record in Raiders history, but who has a poor record and has never played in the postseason. Any off-season that becomes Carr’s “drama” must be to his credit. As Carr said at the beginning of camp last summer, he was tired of being disrespected. And as many responded, he better play. Carr threw 27 nine-pound touchdown passes last season. Groundhog Day in Silver and Blackdom. Stay tuned, folks. — Paul Gutierrez

Mike Williams Wide receiver

Mr. Williams’ five-year option was revoked last April, which meant he would receive $15.7 million in 2020. That’s too much money for a receiver who has never made 50 catches and has scored only seven touchdowns in the last two seasons. Yes, the No. 7 pick in the 2017 draft is big and strong, and has all the tools to become a top wideout, but he doesn’t seem to match the strengths of rookie quarterback Justin Herbert. – Shelley Smith

Naomi Osaka, Serena Williams show resolve in Melbourne, keep potential semis clash alive

A smiling Serena Williams made her way to the net after defeating Arina Sabalenka in three hard-fought sets in the fourth round of the 2021 Australian Open. Eighteen-time champion Chris Evert seemed delighted by what she had just witnessed.

“Is this the next level of women’s tennis?” – She said on ESPN. “Wow.”

Anyone who followed the day’s action at the Rod Laver Arena knew exactly what Evert meant. The first two matches of the day featured the most exciting moments of the tournament on center court and two of the tournament’s top players, Williams and Naomi Osaka. In front of a stadium with no fans and largely in silence due to a government-imposed blockade, the two former Australian Open champions were put to the test in their respective matches.

But as Billie Jean King often says, “champions adapt,” and Serena and Osaka have done so in a way that leaves no doubt about their insatiable desire to win.

Osaka faced two-time Slam winner Garbine Muguruza in their first match. The two former No1s of the world will meet in their battle towards the quarter-finals. Muguruza has yet to lose a set in his eight matches in Melbourne and his confidence has brought Osaka to the brink.

After trailing 3-5 in the third set and a doubles point, Osaka won the next four points, including an ace from 118 meters, and triumphed 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 in just under two hours.

“I think today was just a battle, if I can describe it in one word. I’m very happy with the way I handled the match,” Osaka said. “I think a year ago … I probably wouldn’t have won that match. There were so many things I was thinking about on the court that just kept me from winning the game or trying to attack.

The 23-year-old remained focused and calm except for a racquet toss in the third set, which she then cited as the trigger for the emotion she needed. She focused on the points and tried to remember what worked in her victory in the semifinals of the US Open over Jen Brady because she “never had to fight as hard physically and mentally” as she did in that match.

Well, it worked. By the end of the match, she had 11 aces and 40 winners (and 36 unforced errors) and had won many brilliant baseline changes. When it was over, she sat down in her chair and pulled a towel over her head in disbelief. Her field interview did not have the charm of eccentricity; she said she was exhausted. She had given everything she had.

She summed it up by simply writing on social media, “Keep up the good work.

It would have been difficult to top Osaka’s performance, but it was clear from Williams’ first shout of “Go!” that his first meeting with Sabalenka would be an exciting duel between two of the tour’s greatest players.

The seventh-seeded Sabalenka, winner of 18 of his last 19 matches, dominated his serve from the start, but Williams relied on his impressive defense and renewed ability to be all over the court. Williams couldn’t keep up in the second set, losing his first set of the tournament, and Sabalenka struggled to force a count. Sabalenka made up a 1-4 deficit in the third set to tie the match, but after that everything went according to plan for Williams. She won the next four points to take the lead after Sabalenka committed a double fault and two forehand errors in the final game.

Two hours and nine minutes later, Williams was in the quarterfinals of a major match for the seventh time since returning from childbirth, celebrating her first top-10 victory since 2019, and pulling a face for the camera at the end.

“I felt that even in the matches I lost, I was so close to winning. Not every match, but probably most,” she said, “I just needed to play better in the big points. I knew I could do it. “I haven’t reached the top yet.” I said, “Okay, Serena, you can do it, keep going.

There was not a single women’s match in three sets at Rod Laver during the entire tournament. The only thing missing was a compact crowd, but the sounds of the court – screams, growls, the sound of a dropped racket – made the stakes even more apparent. And Osaka and Serena were counting on no one but themselves to make it happen or to create the energy or atmosphere they needed.

Osaka will then take on Hsieh Su-Wei, while Williams will take on Simona Halep in the quarterfinals on Tuesday. If both teams advance, they will meet in the semifinals, a rematch of the 2018 US Open final. While Williams will likely be excited to face Osaka with the possibility of reaching the final and possibly winning a record 24th major title, the 39-year-old showed Sunday that she can still compete at the highest level of talent.

“Right from the start of the draw, there were a lot of players who could really win the title,” Williams said. “There are so many players who can and will go on to win the Grand Slam. That’s a good thing. It’s good to see. It’s good to see that I’m there, too.

England 41-18 Italy: Hosts find flashes of flair to bounce back from Scotland defeat

England: (20) 41
Essay: Hill, Watson 2, May, Willis, Daly; Pen: Farrell; Contra: Farrell 4
Italy: (8) 18
Essay: John, Allan; Pens: Garbisi 2; Contra: Garbisi

After losing against Scotland last weekend, England put in a solid attacking performance to beat Italy.

Monty Euan’s early try caused an upset at Twickenham before England’s Jonny Hill and Anthony Watson equalized.

Wing Johnny May ends the first half with a spectacular jump from the tackle.

After the break, an impressive interception attempt by Watson sealed the bonus point for the defending champions.

Substitute Jack Willis scored from close range, but had to be put on the stretcher almost immediately after injuring his knee.

Substitute Tommaso Allan added a second try for Italy before Elliot Daly sealed victory for England, giving fans some comfort after last weekend’s surprising defeat.

England are now hoping that Wales beat Scotland or Ireland beat France in their other two games this weekend to regain the title.

Exciting. Maybe try to end the first half on a high note.

Before the match, there was talk that England needed to put in a good performance to bounce back from the defeat against Scotland, with 28th place in good form.

Italy’s head coach Franco Smith is building for the future with a youth team led by scrum half Stephen Varney, 19, and opening half Paolo Garbisi, 20.

England head coach Eddie Jones saw it differently. He left Ollie Lawrence’s cross out of play and left Harry Randall scrumhalf of Paolo Odogwu to make his debut in the lightest match of the Six Nations.

Initially it looked like the youngsters would win the day, as after several phases of lively attacking play with Welshman Warney in the eye of the storm, the Italians took a surprising lead.

Garbisi sent the ball down the left side to full-back Jacopo Trulla, who passed the ball to Daly, who headed Ioane into the left corner three minutes later.

England seemed to have awoken from their slumber after the restart. The ball was put aside on the left wing, but the space for May on the left wing was wasted when Daly’s pass arrived.

Owen Farrell brought Italy back to within two points with a penalty kick in front of the posts, before Henry Slade’s cross secured his place as Jones’ replacement in midfield.

The kick was intercepted by George Ford and Itoje took the ball a few meters from the line, but it was compatriot Hill who finally made his first international try from close range.

Last weekend, England failed to draw a single line against Scotland, and this time Watson seemed determined to change the action around him, slashing down the wing to work his way through the Blues’ wall.

His effort was dashed when hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie – along with Jamie George – was penalized for the breakdown and Garbisi equalized.

Slade again set Twickenham ablaze with his own shots on the ground and on the testing line, but he was unable to finish the job.

England finally got their second try when May’s quick hands released Slade on the left flank and the hosts took the ball on the opposite flank where Watson passed Varney to score.

Jones’ team closed the first half in style when Daly found the free-standing May on the left and the winger leapt over Luca Sperandio’s tackle to score a spectacular touchdown, adding to his earlier score.

Jonny May jumps in the air to score a try Johnny May’s incredible performance was England’s point choice.

Watson’s interception adds up to try to make it count.

Italy were beaten 50-10 by France in their first game, but they were determined not to be beaten. Garbizi’s deep pass allowed Ioane and the winger to enter England and score 22 points.

The visitors had to settle for a penalty kick, which Itoje shot for the posts and gave the Italians an easy three-pointer.

England had rhythm and intensity, but the errors in ball handling, which at the end of the match amounted to 18 against six on the Italian side, continued to pile up and came from unusual sources: half the scrums, Ben Youngs, May and Farrell were all guilty.

Another moment of individual genius allowed Watson to widen the gap on the scoreboard by intercepting a pass from Garbisi and returning to the three-quarter of the field to score the try for the bonus point.

Farrell, who had already received a five-match stadium ban in September 2020 for a highside tackle, was the subject of an official investigation in a televised match for his contact with Varney, but fortunately for the England captain, who had already been hit hard, he was deemed safe.

The home team’s quest continued when scrumhalf Dan Robson – who was replaced by Youngs – showed he was nine years older than his counterpart Varney when he quickly took a penalty kick and ran to the five-yard line.

From then on the forwards took command, Willis took the ball from the base of a ruck and scored. But the deficit was immediately reduced when he had to be taken off the field on a stretcher due to a knee injury, which will keep him out of action for the entire 2018 season.

In temperatures just above freezing at Twickenham, Italy surprised England after halftime and Federico Mori broke through the home defense to give Alan the chance to score as a substitute.

England responded immediately, Robson solidifying his grip on the game with an impressive pass to Daly, who had plenty of room to run for his sixth and final try.

Man of the match: Anthony Watson

Anthony Watson runs with the ball Johnny May’s try was by far the most impressive, but man of the match had to go to Anthony Watson who, as if his two tries weren’t enough, scored the eighth after Willis left the field.

“We are ourselves again,” they said.

England captain Owen Farrell told ITV Sport, “It’s not the best performance we’ve ever had, but in terms of energy and willpower, we’re ourselves again.

“We had honest conversations during the week and we worked things out on the training ground. I thought we had attacked the game, that our intentions were brilliant, that we were behind schedule, that things were not going the way we wanted, but we persevered.

Kyle Sinclair, the England pro, told ITV Sport, “It was a step in the right direction, we probably didn’t get the hugs we wanted, but in terms of intention and showing what it means to play for our country, it was a step in the right direction.”

“It was well done” – Analysis.

Former England scrum half Matt Dawson told Radio 5 Live Sports Extra: “England must have felt it was a couple of tries but not a clinical performance – it was work.

“There are still inaccuracies and indiscipline. Given the standards they have set, they will want to return to the glory days of 2019. The performance is 7 out of 10”.

Natasha Hunt, England’s World Cup scrum half, told Radio 5 Live Sports Extra: “A massive improvement on last weekend and the intensity of what they did, led by Anthony Watson.

“The result of the sanction is something they will definitely look at next week. Against France, Ireland and Wales, they have to withdraw it because they will punish you.”

England found flashes of attacking flair to bounce back from last weekend’s Scotland defeat and claim a six-try Six Nations win against Italy.

Monty Ioane’s early try caused a scare at Twickenham, before England’s Jonny Hill and Anthony Watson crossed.

Wing Jonny May closed out the first half in style, leaping out of a tackle to touch down in spectacular fashion.

After the break, Watson’s impressive intercept try sealed a bonus point for the defending champions.

Substitute back row Jack Willis scored from short range but was almost immediately carried off the pitch on a stretcher after sustaining a knee injury.

Replacement back Tommaso Allan added a second try for Italy before Elliot Daly crossed for England to seal victory and offer some solace to fans after last weekend’s unexpected loss.

England will now be hoping for a Wales win against Scotland or Irish victory over France in the weekend’s other two fixtures to get their title bid back on track.

Spectacular May try ends first half on a high

All the talk pre-match was about England needing to put in a performance as they looked to recover from a poor showing in defeat to Scotland, with a 28th consecutive win against Italy taken as a given.

Italy head coach Franco Smith is building for the future with a youthful team centred around 19-year-old scrum-half Stephen Varney and 20-year-old fly-half Paolo Garbisi.

England head coach Eddie Jones looked to have different plans, having dropped centre Ollie Lawrence for the game and avoided giving scrum-half Harry Randall or centre Paolo Odogwu a debut in the easiest of the Six Nations fixtures.

Initially it looked as though youth would win the day as, after a few phases of lively attack with Welsh-born Varney in the eye of the storm, the Italians took an unexpected lead.

Garbisi sent the ball left to full-back Jacopo Trulla, who drew in Daly to allow Ioane to cross in the left corner after just three minutes.

After the restart England looked woken from a slumber and they sped the ball left, but room for May on the left wing was wasted as Daly’s pass flew into touch.

Owen Farrell trimmed Italy’s lead to two with a penalty in front of the posts then centre Henry Slade entered the fray, keen to cement his place in Jones’ changing midfield.

His grubber kick was gathered by George Ford and Itoje took the ball to within metres of the tryline but eventually it was fellow lock Hill who went over from close range for his first international try.

England did not make any line breaks against Scotland last weekend and Watson looked fiercely motivated to single-handedly change that this time around, coming in from the wing on an angle to scythe through the wall of blue.

His efforts were wasted as hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie – starting in place of Jamie George – was penalised at the breakdown and Garbisi evened the scores.

Slade injected a bit of fire into the Twickenham chill once more as he chased his own kicks along the floor and across the tryline, but he did not manage to finish the job.

England did eventually get a second try as fast hands from May released Slade on the left wing, then the hosts hurried the ball to the opposite flank where Watson stepped past Varney to score.

And Jones’ side finished the half with aplomb as Daly found May with space on the left and the wing jumped over Luca Sperandio’s tackle for a spectacular touchdown to add to his already packed showreel.

Jonny May jumps in the air to score a tryJonny May’s incredible try was the pick of England’s scores

Watson intercept adds to try tally

Italy had been beaten 50-10 by France in their opening game but were determined to keep themselves in this match as Garbisi’s cross-field kick found Ioane and the wing raced into England’s 22.

The visitors had to settle for a penalty, conceded by Itoje in front of the posts to give Italy’s fly-half an easy three points.

England had pace and intensity but their handling errors – which totalled 18 to Italy’s six by the end of the game – continued to grow and came from unusual sources with scrum-half Ben Youngs, May and Farrell all guilty.

Another moment of individual brilliance furthered their lead on the scoreboard though, as Watson intercepted Garbisi’s pass and covered three quarters of the pitch to score the bonus-point try.

Farrell – who had already served a five-match ban for a high tackle in September 2020 – was the subject of a television match official investigation for his contact on Varney, but fortunately for the already much-scrutinised England captain it was deemed to be safe.

Things continued to look up for the hosts as scrum-half Dan Robson – on as a replacement for Youngs – showed that being nine years senior to his opposite number Varney made him no less spritely as he took a quick penalty and raced up to within five metres of the tryline.

The forwards took on the job from there as Willis picked the ball up from the base of a ruck and scored. But the back row swooped immediately from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows as he was stretchered off with a knee injury – something which kept him out of the game for a whole season in 2018.

With the Twickenham weather hovering just above freezing, Italy caught England cold after the break in play and Federico Mori broke through the hosts’ defence to allow replacement Allan to score.

England responded immediately as Robson furthered his impact on the game with an impressive pass to Daly, who had plenty of room to run in the sixth and final try.

Man of the match: Anthony Watson

Anthony Watson runs with the ballJonny May’s try was undoubtedly the most impressive but man of the match has to go to Anthony Watson who, as if his two tries were not enough, packed down at number eight after Willis left the field.

‘That was back to being us’ – what they said

England captain Owen Farrell told ITV Sport: “Not the best performance we have ever had but in terms of the energy and intent that was back to being us.

“We had some honest conversations in the week, and got things right on the training field. I thought we attacked the game, our intent was brilliant, we got in behind them, not everything went our way but we stuck at it.”

England prop Kyle Sinckler told ITV Sport: “It was a step in the right direction, we probably didn’t get the rewards we wanted but in terms of intent, and showing what it means to play for our country it was a step in the right direction.”

‘It was workmanlike’ – analysis

Former England scrum-half Matt Dawson said on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra: “England probably felt like they were a couple of tries short of a clinical performance – it was workmanlike.

“There are still inaccuracies and indiscipline. Knowing the standards they set, they will want to get back to the glory days of 2019. A seven out of 10 performance.”

World Cup-winning England scrum-half Natasha Hunt said on Radio 5 Live Sports Extra: “A huge improvement from last weekend, and also the intensity of what they’ve been doing, led by Anthony Watson.

“The penalty count will be something they definitely will look at next week. Against France, Ireland and Wales they need to get it down because they will punish you.”

J.J. Watt joins James Harden, Russell Westbrook among Houston departures in the last year

For Houston Texans fans, the last twelve months have been one goodbye after another. With the Houston Texans’ decision to fire J.J. Watt, one of the city’s most beloved players is gone.

Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, will now go to another team after ten years with the Texans, where he produced 101 sacks.

“I’m very excited and looking forward to this new opportunity and I’ve been working really hard,” Watt said Friday. “But at the same time, it’s always hard to move on.”

Watt now joins an extensive and growing list of players who left Houston teams last year.

When: March 2020

Where: The Arizona Cardinals made a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Entry Draft, beating David Johnson and making two draft picks.

What happened: Hopkins threw 54 touchdown passes in seven seasons in Houston. He was QB Deshaun Watson’s best target and one of the best young receivers in the league. In his evaluation of the exchange, Bill Barnwell described it as “amazing, baffling and inexplicable for [Bill] O’Brien, whose strange journey as Texas general manager will one day be the subject of a 30-by-30 documentary. In his first season in Arizona, Hopkins was a receiver for the QB Kyler Murray Cardinals. Hopkins caught 115 assists for 1,407 yards and six scores in 2020.

When: December 2020

Where: Westbrook was traded by the Houston Rockets against the Washington Wizards for John Wall and a lottery-protected 2023 first-round pick.

What happened: Westbrook’s stay in Houston was short-lived, but he averaged 27.2 points per game in one season with the Rockets. The Rockets were prematurely eliminated from the NBA playoffs in 2020, and according to Tim McMahon of ESPN, “Westbrook was frustrated with the style of play and lack of discipline of his then partner, James Harden. This season, Westbrook is averaging 19.7 points per game and the Wizards stand at 6-16.

Staff Sergeant James Harden

When: January 2021

True: Harden was traded from the Rockets to the Brooklyn Nets in a four-way deal.

What happened: Harden’s eight seasons in Houston made him a true superstar. He was a three-time top scorer and MVP in 2018, but the Rockets never reached the NBA Finals with Harden, despite his scoring prowess. At the beginning of the season, Houston had lost its coach and GM, and Harden called for a trade. He arrived late to training camp and reportedly scored with a header over Westbrook. “I don’t blame James. I blame the organization,” the former Rockets assistant told McMahon. “It’s not his fault. He did what he was allowed to do.” In mid-January, Harden got his wish. He scored a triple-double in his debut for the Nets. With stars as talented as Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant, Harden averaged 23.9 points per game and 11 assists. The assists are nearly five points per game higher than his career average.

When: January 2021

True: A week after Harden, Springer left the Houston Astros and signed a six-year, $150 million contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.

What happened. Springer has been the centerpiece of the Astros’ recent dominance. He has hit 174 home runs in seven seasons in Houston. He was involved in two World Series victories in 2017 and was named MVP. Springer is the second most titled player, behind Mike Trout, in terms of wins over replacement players in two of the last three seasons. In Toronto, he will be another big hitter in the lineup of Bo Bichette, Kavanaugh Biggio and Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

Frequently asked questions

One surprising cut for the Indianapolis Colts this offseason

The Indianapolis Colts have a lot of questions to answer this off-season, and they need to get going. Philip Rivers has announced his retirement and the Colts have been active in the quarterback market. With Rivers returning to the playoffs in his first and only year, the organization wants to keep its place in the AFC.

They finished the season 11-5 and made the playoffs, but lost 27-24 to the Buffalo Bills in the Wild Card round. When Rivers signed in the offseason, it remained to be seen how long he would stay there, so it’s no surprise that he decided to call it a day. Jacoby Brissett is entering the market, and rookie Jacob Eason may not yet be ready to be a full-time regular on a team aiming for the playoffs.

However, the Colts are a playoff team in 2021 and should be active enough to try to get a quarterback, and Carson Wentz is one of the names circulating in trade negotiations, especially after Nick Sirianni left the Colts to be the main man at the Philadelphia Eagles.

The good news is that the Colts are second in the league, and there are a lot of options for this franchise. They need to make some moves, and long time receiver TY Hilton may be on his way out, and the question remains what will happen to this group of receivers, whether Hilton will stay or not.

The Colts desperately need a quarterback, and whether they have Wentz or someone else, or they have a draft pick, they need to do something this season to stay competitive next season.

You may not cut back much, but there are a few ways to get a little more room in the hoods.

Colts Cup candidate: TE Jack Doyle.

This may come as a surprise, but let’s see. Doyle will have a cap of $5.7 million, which is the sixth highest on the team. In the backroom, however, there are Doyle and Mo Ali Cox and, of course, rumors of interest in guys like Jonnu Smith and Jared Cook.

Jack Doyle with a clean outlet 🙌 @doylejack84 @Colts

#CINvsIND on FOX pic.twitter.com/ppZkoZ84X1

– Checkdown (@thecheckdown) October 18, 2020

Doyle is not bad, although he had only 251 yards and 23 three-point catches in 2020. He’s not the player he once was and with nearly $6 million in the pipeline for 2021, the Colts could use that money to bring in another quality tight end if they wanted to.

His best season was in 2017, with 80 catches for 680 yards and four touchdowns for the Colts, but he hasn’t come close to those numbers since, a fact that hasn’t escaped everyone, including Doyle himself.

It is unlikely that the Colts will get Burton back after a disappointing year, and if they let Doyle go, they could enter the free agent market like Smith or even Hunter Henry if he does not reapply in Los Angeles.

The Colts’ offense is based on youth with Jonathan Taylor, Michael Pittman and everyone who will be throwing passes at Indianapolis next season. The influx of youth on this team could make Doyle expendable.

Add to that the fact that the offense in Indy will likely consist of running backs, with Taylor, Nyheim Hines and Jordan Wilkins being perhaps the best running backs in the NFL.

The biggest hats on him are those of Deforest Buckner, Ryan Kelly, Grover Stewart, Quenton Nelson and Mark Glowinski. It is highly unlikely that any of these guys will be eliminated next season, especially when you consider that three of them make up more than half of the offensive line, and Buckner caused quite a stir after his arrival from the San Francisco 49ers.

It’s always helpful to have a ton of cap space, and free up some more space by allowing someone like Doyle to target them at free agent quarterbacks or big stands with a tight end or wide receiver, especially if Hilton is going to play elsewhere.

Either way, the Colts don’t need to cut this season, as they have plenty of cap space. However, if they want to spend a lot of money on one of the free agents, they may end up scrapping Doyle and trying their luck elsewhere.

The offseason will be busy for the Colts, and the top priority should be solving the quarterback problem, but don’t be surprised if the Colts make a few cuts to free up some more money and give themselves more flexibility in changing their squad.

NBA, Grizzlies, Lakers, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr.
