SANTA CLARA, California. — In a seemingly endless and devastating injury season, San Francisco’s 49-year-old player may have scored two of his biggest hits, said Monday on ESPN Adam Schefter that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and hard-hitting and George Kittle might be gone for a long time.

According to Garoppolo, the exacerbation of the upper right ankle, which occurred Sunday with the loss of 37-27 Seattle Sychaux, should keep it elevated for at least six weeks and possibly longer if surgery is required, the source said.

Despite the initial optimism that Kittle had no broken feet, further tests showed that the broken bone would take him about eight weeks, depending on the source. With eight games to go and a farewell, the season could be over for Kittle.

Haroppolo and Kittle entered the fourth quarter on Sunday. Garoppolo seems to have corrected and played by the ankle earlier in the game, but was withdrawn with the remaining 14:02. He limped in the dressing room and made 84 meters with a 55.2 interception from 11 to 16.

Nick Mullens replaced Garopolo and scored 18 of 25 for 238 yards with two touchdowns for a score of 128.4 passes. Due to the long absence of Haroppolo, Mullens will return to his starting position when Haroppolo missed two games earlier this season due to a sprained ankle. C.J. Beathardt will be Mullens’ cover.

Mullens said on Sunday that he would be willing to come to Haroppolo for a longer period of time if necessary.

When you can get out and get away from my last departure, it will certainly inspire confidence, Mullens said. The biggest thing I just realized is that the NFL is tough. It’s about what you’re going to do now. That’s why I tell myself every day that it all depends on what you do now. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad, it depends on what you’re doing now.

The injury to the kitten’s leg occurred less than two minutes after Garoppolo’s departure, when he jumped on a tractor during Mullens’ 25-metre pass. The kitten made a catch, but landed clumsy, and shortly afterwards he stood on the sidelines and went into the locker room for further evaluation.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said after the game that the first X-rays of Kittle didn’t show any fractures, but that further tests would be needed on Monday to confirm this. Kittle, who signed a five-year, $75 million expansion contract at training camp, missed two games earlier this season, dislocating the MCL in his left knee.

Ross Dvelli replaced Kittle against the Seahawks and intercepted a touchdown with Mullens, although the Niners were able to bring Jordan Reed back quickly with a dislocated knee to help replace Kittle.

I hope to see Jordan Reed this week, but I’m not sure at the moment,” Shanahan said on Sunday.

Kittle and Garoppolo are only the last in a long list of Niners injuries that includes other major players, such as defensive back Nick Bosa (torn ACL), running back Rahim Mostert (ankle sprain), receiver Dibo Samuel (hock sprain) and cornerback Richard Sherman (calf sprain).

Even before Kittle and Garoppolo probably ended up in the injury reserve, 49 players had the highest allowable limit for players in the injury reserve this season at $54.2 million. In eight games, the Niners have had three different passers-by, four different hosts and four different receivers.

All that loss was charged to the dressing room of the Nine.

It still hurts, said lawyer Kyle Buchik. Despite the fact that it seems to happen over and over again, the boys throw every game, it still hurts.

The 49ers (4-4) won’t have much time to focus on their recent injuries. On Thursday night they will receive the Green Bay Packers (5-2).
