Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The list of quarterbacks to be mentioned in connection with the New England Patriots is roughly equal to the team’s playoffs.

One of them is Ryan Fitzpatrick, veteran of the Miami Dolphins. At 38, he has played for every team in the AFC East, except the Patriots. It would therefore be entirely appropriate for him to make one last stop in Foxborough before ending his career.

FitzMagic in New England?

Brian M. Hines of the Pats Pulpit has drawn up a list of possibilities for the Patriots as quarterback in 2021. Fitzpatrick was one of the actors Hines mentioned. Here’s what he said:

As his two-year contract, which he signed in 2019, expires, it seems unlikely that he will return to South Beach. While the veteran remains a great support (a relief?) for Tua Tagovailoa, Fitzpatrick clearly wants a chance to make a new start. He should also have his share of supporters, as the teams were trading for him last year after his relegation to the bench. As far as the Patriots are concerned, modelling their AFC East opponents, the Miami Dolphins, could be the perfect recipe for success. Concluding a short-term deal with Fitzpatrick would allow New England to put a young quarterback – whether Stidham, a rookie or someone else – behind them. The one-year deal for Fitzpatrick should cost the Patriots about $10 million, leaving them enough ammunition for other needs.

Salaries of $10 million. The United States will indeed give the patriots a lot of room to address the concerns of other teams. The Patriots have over $63 million on hand and would probably like to sign a two-year deal with a bridge district like Fitzpatrick, while the young signalist they recruit has a little time to grow.

On the other hand…

Can’t the Patriots bring Cam Newton back for the same kind of contract?

I know that he has been called one of the worst quarterbacks in the League, but I think that the Patriots problems that passed were due to several factors, including the limited time that Newton could manage the attack, his positive COVID-19 test, his problems with accuracy on short shots, Josh McDaniels’ reluctance to move the ball in the field, and his lack of weapons on the wide receivers and the tight end.

We can not ignore any of these problems, and frankly it might be easier for the Patriots to just solve the aspects under their control (the game and the weapons) while waiting for the others to get better (Newton took the offensive, not COWID again). Seems like a better plan than starting all over again.

Fitzpatrick is a solid veteran, but he does not bring the aspect of the racing game that Newton offers, which has been one of the best aspects of the attack of the Patriots this season. Looking at the big picture, Fitzpatrick is not an upgrade.
