Tom Brady-Arians tandem overtakes Mahomes-Reid duo as NFL’s best coach-QB partnership

The Arizona Cardinals lost stars Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald to retirement in recent summers, and lost their offensive coordinator, Bruce Arians, to retirement this week. But they also added star stud quarterback, defensive coordinator, and head coach to their roster with the additions of former New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and former Patriots quarterback and head coach Bill Belichick.

With the NFL preseason in full swing, a new era of QB-coaching duos has emerged. For the first time, all four of the league’s best are running the same offense. Before this week, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick had spent their combined 35 years as a coach-QB combination topping the charts for NFL longevity. Now they’ve been joined by Kliff Kingsbury (Texas Tech), Andy Reid (Kansas City), and Andy Dalton (Cincinnati). The four of them combined for 2,142 passing attempts last year, 1,485 more than the next closest group of Alex Smith and Pat Mahomes (Kansas City).

In his first year with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bruce Arians won their first Super Bowl since 2002 by beating the then-champion Kansas City Chiefs 31-9. According to Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports, that performance was enough to push the Brady/Arians tandem into first place in the NFL in terms of quarterback and head coach cooperation, past quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid.

With his seventh Super Bowl ring, Brady, 43, became only the second quarterback in NFL history to win the Lombardi Trophy with two different teams, following Peyton Manning, who won it with the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos.

Brady led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl titles in 20 seasons before signing a two-year, $50 million contract with the Buccaneers last season. Brady also has the honor of being the first player in NFL history to win a title in three different decades (years 2000, 2010, 2020) and the first signal-caller to win a Super Bowl title in any conference.

Brady, Arians help each other

According to Kerr, Arians contributed to Brady’s success with the Buccaneers after the quarterback set a new record by throwing 43 touchdown passes. Brady finished the regular season with 4,633 yards and 40 touchdowns on 401 passes. As for Brady, he helped Arians become the oldest head coach to win a Super Bowl at 68 years and 127 days when the Buccaneers defeated three former Super Bowl MVPs – Drew Brees of the New Orleans Saints, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers and Patrick Mahomes – in the playoffs to win the Super Bowl title at home, becoming the first team in NFL history to do so.

Kerr was surprised at what Brady and Arians accomplished in their first year together, considering there was no preseason and training camp was limited. The odds were even for the Buccaneers to win the Super Bowl in their first year with Brady and Arians, but they still won the title. Imagine what the second year could bring for this duo, Kerr said.

With all 22 players back on the team, the Buckeyes are determined to win the Super Bowl again next season.

Mahomes and Reed are second on Kerr’s list, followed by Aaron Rodgers/Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers, Russell Wilson/Pete Carroll of the Seattle Seahawks, Lamar Jackson/John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens and Josh Allen/Sean McDermott of the Buffalo Bills, Ryan Tannehill/Mike Vrabel of the Tennessee Titans, Ben Roethlisberger/Mike Tomlin of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baker Mayfield/Kevin Stefenski of the Cleveland Browns and Jimmy Garoppolo/Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers.

No long-term contract for Godwin yet

Receiver Chris Godwin is one of the starters returning to the Bucanis’ roster next season. Godwin, Brady’s No. 2 target, stayed with the Buccaneers after the team branded him. Although the Buccaneers and Godwin have expressed intentions to agree on a long-term contract, talks haven’t progressed much, according to Luke Easterling of USA Today and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Pelissero said nothing is expected in terms of a long-term deal between Godwin and the Buccaneers. However, the Buccaneers and Godwin could work out a long-term deal during the season.
