Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis suffered another tear in his right Achilles tendon in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Denver Nuggets, eliminating him from the 2020 Western Conference finals.

Davis suffered an injury in the right calf after a roll against Nuggets’ center Nikola Jokic. Davis attempted two free throws before the Lakers drew a foul on their next ball, leaving their big All-Star player out of action before halftime.

Without their two-way star, the visibly damaged Lakers failed at Ball Arena and handed their worst defeat of the 2020-21 season, 122-105.

Anthony Davis plays against the Nuggets.

Frankly, it was a bit of a surprise to see Davis in costume Sunday, as it wouldn’t have shocked anyone if he had stayed home for the Lakers’ two games in Denver and Minnesota. Of course, his injury makes you wonder if he should have made the trip to the icy climate and high altitude.

He has only exacerbated what he had last week ….. We’ll know more tomorrow after the MRI, Lakers coach Vogel said in his post-game zone with reporters. Vogel made no assumptions about the injury other than the initial diagnosis of an Achilles tendon strain.

However, Vogel pointed out that Davis had been approved by the team’s medical staff. We don’t put him on the street if he’s in danger. If the medical team lets him play, he plays.

Davis has struggled with a number of health issues this season, forcing him to miss five games, including the final two against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Staples Center on Monday and Wednesday. He returned Friday and scored 35 points with a 16-0f-27 shot in a win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

Davis is averaging 22.9 points and 8.6 rebounds per game this season. The Lakers have won 4-1 in AD games so far this year.

Was Anthony Davis’ wound mishandled?

After the Grizzlies’ doubleheader, Davis said his Achilles tendon – or rather, the area just above it – was excellent for most of the game … Until it doesn’t happen again.

During the race, the Achilles tendon was under constant tension and at the end it hurt because I was constantly moving it, Davis said after the race.

Davis added that he only contracted the disease two weeks ago. Last Thursday, the seven-time All-Star recommended that his injury be treated as a precaution.

If it was an ATV or a finger or something, I wouldn’t mind playing, Davis told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin on Thursday. But I don’t want to play with Achilles.

I don’t want to play a game where I still feel it and I get injured and have to go to the playoffs or something, or a few weeks where it’s something I can’t control and support right now, where you miss a few games early or midway through the season and you’re done for the rest of the season.

There was clearly discord between Davis and the team, as Davis played in both tournaments after these comments. After Sunday’s rehearsal, one can only wonder if Vogel and the medical staff want to work on keeping their injuries safe.

Davis said he felt good the first time he went back against Memphis, but he acknowledged he could have been smarter in his handling, even though he thinks he was the first time.

However, the DA rejected the idea of him rushing to court.

Today is the first day I felt good…. I didn’t feel that at all this morning, he said after the defeat against the Nuggets. He added that his withdrawal was going in the right direction until another setback on Valentine’s Day.

Feeling ready to go, Davis continued. The training staff thought I was ready. The game in Memphis went well, I woke up the next day. I think we’ve done all we can to get back …. Everything was great today. I felt great in the first quarter…. Until the last game. …The way I was moving and kicking only made it worse, but I don’t think I was controlling myself.

You don’t want to rub up against a wound like that, Mr. Davis repeated. Just trying to figure out what the best steps are after I get the MRI information tomorrow.

Davis scored 15 points and four rebounds before leaving the game after about two and a half minutes into the first half.

The next Lakers man.

The loss dropped the defending champion to 21-7 for the season and the Nuggets improved their record to 15-11. The Joker made a triple-double in three quarters (23/15/10) and Jamal Murray led all scorers with 25 points.

Aside from the AD injury, Michael Malones’ squad was optimistic from the start, looking to recover from a 113-94 loss against the Lakers at 4. February’s revenge.

Of course, the condition of Davis’ Achilles tendon and Monday’s MRI will be the Lakers’ highlights over the next 24 hours.

All I care about is his health, James said afterwards. I want him to be healthy… Our team needs him to be healthy.

The Lakers leader also said he hopes Davis will do everything in his power to recover, no matter how long it takes. No hurry, no schedule, he insisted.

That the next person could very well be Kyle Kuzma.

Last week, Kuzma and Markieff Morris both got a chance to start in the AD’s absence. Kuzma is the most effective (and best) player, although the addition of Morris – a marginal but capable player – allows Frank Vogel to keep his secondary team intact.

Kuzma was praised all season by James, Vogel and others for giving up points in favor of small things.

It’s obviously hard for him, Kuzma said of the DA. We know he’s had to deal with some [injuries] …. back to the bubble… But it’s always the mentality of the next person.

Kuzma has averaged one less game per game than he did in 2020-21, though he has never played better basketball, including a career record of 8.7 rebounds in 36 minutes and a priceless rush every night.

Ironically, he may have to open his door again if Davis has to miss a game. Kuzma averaged 17.3 points per game in his first two seasons, while the average since the start of the 2019-20 season is 12.2 points per game.

My approach is the same, Kuzma said of his role as Davis runs into time trouble. Take every bounce… play with lots of spirit, lots of energy and lots of bite. Let’s see where this gets me.

The Lakers take on the Timberwolves (7-20) on Tuesday at Target Center, before taking on the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday at home in prime time.

James admitted that losing to the DA is a blow because he played so well. At least now the Lakers have a chance to prepare for his absence for the game against the Wolves and beyond.

Pending the MRI results, the LakeShow will take a break while organizers and fans hold their breath.

Lakers coach Frank Vogel told reporters on the 18th. Davis will be out for four weeks in February after doctors confirmed the calf strain earlier this evening.
