At first glance, Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro may not seem like the most exciting piece of tech to come out in recent months. But after spending some time with it, it quickly becomes clear that this device packs a ton of features and functionality.
Home security can be a touchy subject, and some people have strong feelings about what they consider to be “the right” way to do it. On the other hand, there’s no denying that home surveillance cameras are a very important element in keeping your family and property safe. Not only can they offer valuable evidence in the event of an attack, but they can also protect your privacy by deterring burglars. So, the question is, what’s the best security camera system?
CNN . Ring has taken 2021 by storm with the release of several new video doorbells, an outdoor smart outlet and an update to the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro. The latter, which we’ll focus on now, has all the benefits we were impressed with in the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2. This includes features like amazing 3D motion detection and Bird’s Eye View, which shows where someone has moved in the camera’s field of view on your property. The $249 Floodlight Cam Wired Pro is already available in black or white. Both colors are in backorder; the white version is expected in four to six weeks and the black model in mid-June. The past few weeks we have put this combination of light and camera to the test. It met our expectations for a device from the Ring series that was in dire need of an upgrade. Let’s take a closer look at the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, starting with its design and installation. For whom? The Floodlight Cam Wired Pro is a great solution for anyone who wants to keep an eye on their driveway or yard, or who can’t install a video entry system but still wants extra security. The 2,000-lumen floodlights are bright enough to stop a deer, and the camera can stream 1080p video directly to your phone so you can keep an eye on your home. What you need to know: The Floodlight Cam Wired Pro costs $249. It’s not a cheap device, but the features justify the price. You can overlook a large area of your yard or driveway, and if something is amiss, you can sound the siren or turn on the lights to alert others. The addition of 3D Motion and Bird’s Eye View are welcome, and we hope to see them extended to other Ring devices. As he compares himself: It’s been far too long since Ring updated its Spotlight camera, and the Pro is a worthy successor to the first Spotlight camera. You get all the premium features Ring has to offer in a versatile solution that looks good and does its job. If you don’t like the $249 price tag, Ring offers a slightly less functional version, the Floodlight Cam Wired Plus for $179, which looks interesting on paper. The Arlo Pro 3 flood camera also costs $249 and offers 2K video, but doesn’t have a wired connection, so you’ll either have to buy a solar panel or keep charging the batteries. 
Jason Cipriani/ CNN Ring first launched the Floodlight Cam in 2017, and the company hasn’t said anything about it since. It was beginning to feel like the projector was almost forgotten. Then, amidst announcements of a new video doorbell, Ring unveiled an update to the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro. The biggest change is the Floodlight Cam’s slim, round design. This is similar to what Ring did with the Ring Spotlight Cam, but more modern. Both projectors are oval shaped and adjustable, so you can direct the light exactly where you need it. Each lantern emits 2,000 lumens, which is more than enough to light up a driveway or the wall of a house. The HD camera, located in the center of the lights, is also adjustable and locked in both directions to prevent movement. 
Jason Cipriani/ CNN Since this is a hardwired device, it is important to note that you should only install it yourself if you know how to work with electrical wiring. Even if this is the case, you should still take precautions, such as. B. opening the circuit breaker from which the fixture is wired. If you are unsure, have a professional electrician install your light. Since we install a lot of lighting fixtures, both indoors and outdoors, we felt very comfortable installing the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro. The whole process took about 20 minutes, from unpacking to turning on the switch. Nice and simple. Installation involves removing the old, not-so-smart projector and then installing the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro in place. You’ll need to attach the bracket and mounting plate (with a handy hook that holds the lamp in place while you run the wires through), and finally install the lamp in place.

Once the light was installed and everything was secure, we turned the switch back on, then the light switch, and immediately we heard a chime, at which point the Ring Floodlight Cam Wired Pro lit up and told us it was ready to go. The rest of the process can be done within the application and outside the ladder. You scan a small QR code to link the camera to your Ring account, connect it to your home’s Wi-Fi connection, wait a few minutes to install all the updates, then set up motion sensors and position the camera however you want.

With the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro in your Ring account, you can view live camera feeds anytime on your phone or even on the Amazon Echo Show or Fire TV. Just ask Alexa to show [insert camera name], and within seconds you’ll be able to see and hear what’s happening near your camera. She has good connections in the Ring and Alexa ecosystem. 
Jason Cipriani/ CNN Speaking of the camera: The Floodlight Cam Wired Pro has a 1080p camera with a horizontal viewing angle of 140 degrees and a vertical viewing angle of 80 degrees. We were very pleased with the overall quality of the videos and photos taken during the test. So what does this mean to you? We used the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro once on a trip to check on our house after a heavy storm, and to our surprise we could zoom in on the back door of our house and clearly see our two dogs watching the rain and hail in the yard. Our dog sitter didn’t know it, but running in the rain and catching raindrops is one of her favorite things to do. With the built-in microphone and speaker, you can have a two-way conversation with a person in sight. We could talk to our family members without feeling like we had to shout for them to be heard, and we could hear their voices – and those of passing cars – with minimal effort on their part. There’s also a 110 decibel siren that can be activated through the app, and let’s just say our tests confirmed that it’s pretty loud. This will certainly deter a potential villain or attract the attention of neighbors. Until now, the only Ring device with the company’s latest and greatest features was the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2. It launched last March and we loved the new features. Or, in the case of 3D motion detection, we were pleased to see a decrease in false alarms due to more accurate motion detection. The same features are now included in the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, and we’re excited about it. Setting up 3D motion detection is easy. You click on a satellite image of your home to indicate where you want to install the camera, and the application displays the specified movement area at the top of the map. You can set the distance at which the camera tracks movements, displaying changes on the map. Due to the location of our facility, we set up the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro to monitor up to 30 feet away. Of course, 30 feet is about the distance at which we would get motion alerts when someone or something enters the camera’s field of view. As you can see in the video example, our Emoji dog loves to walk down the path to our office. When he is within range of the motion detector, a miniature bird’s eye view appears on the screen and the dots begin to follow his movement. 
Jason Cipriani/ CNN Talk about the big picture: This feature uses the same aerial photo as a satellite map of your home, but instead of showing you where the motion detection stops and starts, a thumbnail map is displayed on the video. On this map, you’ll see a series of dots moving across your yard or driveway, indicating where the person went after the camera registered the movement. Awarding points for where the person actually walked is not always the same. During installation, you will be asked to specify the exact location of the camera in your area and add the field of view. This is not an exact process as we have seen with the Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2. The bird’s eye view is useful if you want to see where someone was during the live stream, but you don’t want to or can’t go back in the video timeline to see them. The advanced motion detection and advanced security offered by Bird’s Eye View makes it a valuable piece of technology for your home. At $249, it’s not cheap, but with all the new technology in the Floodlight Cam Wired Pro, that’s to be expected. If that’s too much for you, Ring offers the Floodlight Cam Wired Plus, which costs $179.
