Family members not yet living in the United Kingdom may apply to join those enjoying refugee or humanitarian protection status.
They may also be granted a residence permit for other reasons – for example if they are unaccompanied minors or victims of trafficking in human beings. The length of their stay depends on their situation.
In 2019, more than 44,000 people, including family members, applied for asylum in the United Kingdom.
Some 19,500 people have received protection in the United Kingdom in the form of refugee status or other forms of protection.

Migrants can receive legal aid, permanent financial support and housing allowances as part of these legal remedies, which can sometimes take years.
